  1. Exactly...this is why I cant understand what the OP is on about

    Probably just being sanctimonious.wink.png

No I wasn't. Just wanting to know how many people knew what this day was. Only one poster actually answered.

Simple question - Village farang - how long have you lived in Thailand ? did you know what this day celebrated ? Ask your wife or girlfriend if she knows. IF you have kids that are Buddhist, shouldn't you be responsible for teaching them the significance of Buddha days.

Although I'm not a Buddhist, I took my family to the temple last night. I'd feel stupid if I didn't know why I was taking them there.

The main reason is BIG FACE from what I see

  2. I dont see why its important at all to know. I dont know what Easter means because for me its all claptrap and therefore irrelevant.

Easter means chocolate eggs and a long weekend off work. As for Asanha Bucha Day, I guess its the same thing just without the eggs!

I find it incredible how many Westerns dont know the real significance of the 25th of December

It always amazes me how Jesus was born on Christmas Day. Now there's a coincidence!

Even more amazing a virgin birth...............some would say ridiculous???

If man/woman kind was wiped out tomorrow.............what would be the significance?? NONE

  4. I cant understand some of these Thai girls...So what if the farang is rich ? Do you think the farang or any nationalities will give u his whole wealth & assets to you if he passed away?

You can get some of his spare cash & loose coins yeah, for spreading your legs wide per se. But thats about it..

Maybe once a blue moon, there will be a farang with some retirement saving that hops over to Thailand, wanting to live the wonderful life before they are dead. They will buy house, buy motobikes, cars, land..etc etc. Hmm.........come to think of it, its quite lucrative after all for a darked skinned Essarn gal. Considering most middle class Thais would not even dream of dating a dark skinned Thai. The Thais should thanks us for keeping the eco-system in place.. Lol..

Yes happens quite a lot it seems

  5. Well I didn't know, but have been to the Wat with the wife and kids. Got sprinkled with water and got sore knees. Happens every year and I just go with the flow.

This year it will cost me a bit more, must have been a bad man, as wife tells me we are going to buy a concrete pole, 5000 Baht for the new building at the Wat.

All the blessings must have worked, as I am still around and it keeps the wife happy. Jim

5000 baht, the temple is lucky if I give them 50 baht. If it keeps your buddhist wife happy fair enough however I always think how much I would donate to my own faith and that would be nothing.

I always think any money given to the temple is obscene, all they do is build a more shiny temple, its nothing more than a business.

  6. I think a lot of Thais dont like noise but say nothing. Whilst recently building a house in a quiet part of the country a pick up drove past speakers blaring about something, I loaded my imaginary snipers rifle and shot them dead, The workers on site thought it was hilarious so reckon they agreed

  7. How do Thai families feel about seeing family members of theirs in death poses?

Whether it be road accidents or shootings, stabbings etc.

I know many western cultures would take great offence to such pictures. Is it the same for Thai people?

Thai people seem much more at ease with the subject of death than western society.

    just some thought bubbles....

    You're right. It's a different culture.

My thai gf is always trying to show me pictures from news articles where something nasty has happened or get me to slow down (IE more than needed) if we ever pass an accident. I just dont want to look - is it culture or maybe she is just bloodthirsty......unsure.png

    My experience is different.

Most Thai people in my circles do not want to see the carnage of roadside accidents, as the very real and recently disembodied ghosts of the freshly dead are there ready and intent on haunting, possessing, occupying, and tormenting.... just keep driving ... and DON'T look. If one slows and looks, the eyes are a portal to the soul... the ghosts will leap in... and there will be lots and lots of expensive problems "down the road".

Doesnt seem to be that way for most Thais as everytime ive been anywhere near an accident they hover round it like flies drawn to a flame.

  8. google ' strange fruit in kalasin " for the story

Just googled it, and the top hit is blocked by the govt. What a surprise.

Column: Rule of Lords: Strange fruit in Kalasin

Officers of the Kalasin District Police Station in northeastern Thailand are alleged to have abducted and murdered dozens of people in the last few years. The actual number could exceed 100; many more bodies have been found, but were not properly examined and documented before being cremated.

Among the victims, Kietisak Thitboonkrong and Krischadol Pancha disappeared from the police station within days of each other in July 2004, shortly after the official close of the first "war on drugs" declared by former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

Kietisak was 17, Krischadol, 15. Both had been accused of robbery and brought to the police station. Both were granted bail and the grandmother of each had come to the station to collect the boy but was told that he had been released and to go and wait.

Neither ever came home. Kietisak was found in a neighboring province, tortured to death and strung up in a bad attempt at a simulated suicide. Krischadol was not found.

  9. Today, driving blind bend, solid yellow line. Truck and dog coming the other way, motorbike passes truck. We are in a big SUV no room to pull over. Bike goes between us and the truck. If the space had been any less I would have lost my mirror and rider would have gone under the truck. Up to Buddha. Jim

OMG! What happened to the dog?

    Surely you mean the mirror???
