  1. I bought a cheap one and later an expensive one.

Used both on full heat and both died fast.....

Wonder if there is something wrong with your current / electrical supply - guessing you had them in the same location....

A very high percent of the time ours is on full throttle.......and doing well.....

Last time I moved was 1989 and lots might have changed since then, this was Port Sudan to Bangkok.  In any case, I used the predecessor to CROWN RELOCATIONS for the Thai portion of the move, including customs.  Satisfied with their service.

But, you should perhaps reconsider shipment of your car.  Thai Customs duties can be quite high on imported vehicles.  Best to look into this before the move.

    Mac

I just sent them a request for a quote.

As for the taxes on the car, I'm not too worried because it's only a temporary import.   Bringing the char to Thailand for 6 months before sending it somewhere else is much less of a hassle than trying to sell it in Korea when I no longer live there and have a language barrier working against me.

Driving in Thailand is bad enough without upping the chances of an accident in a left hand drive car. As has already been suggested I would sell it over there.

Forget the car - even with everything supposedly approved - when I went to get it after they said come get it they denied mine entry - spent 720,000B trying every conceivable way....was left with a choice to turn it over to them or send back to the states....since I already have a car & RV there in storage with just me to drive and it would have meant more expense - a flight back and hassling with customs and re-registering I gave it up.....

I also know of some people that brought one in as a temporary (race car for competition) shipped it back to where it came from - and a year and counting later have not gotten their deposit back no matter which avenue they're pursued - 300,000B I think.....my advice - don't even try....

  3. This shows sizing....pretty servicable oven....cooking temps seem dialed in pretty well.....it comes with one rack + other item - spit - full size pan and a couple of other things...if you really want to bake something of this size would be good....I also looked at other brands but did not care for a lot of the build qualities of them.....after 2 years of constant use we're glad we chose this one.....

  4. No....I look at the ones that have a long and happy marriage and am genuinely happy for them...most are rutted but some still very active....didn't work out that way for me and I still have optimistic adventure coupled with a good amount of mischief left in my soul...I am happy where I am at.....personally I couldn't think of anything more boring than hanging around a Sun City with a bunch of old people with nothing more to look forward to thsn going to the golf course day after day.....the non pub crawling farangs I mostly meet have life, vitality, and adventurous I can do spirits....more of a healthy pioneer attitude than the "canned and waiting" lifestyle back home.....

  5. We bought one at Makro that is convection...+ a spit.....big enough for a turkey or ham if we wanted....rarely use the convection part...have baked with it an it does quite nicely.....can use upper or lower heat or both.....it's been so handy we went without a microwave for a long time actually not really missing it....cost was 3-4000bt....has the pull out cleaning tray which is helpful....great for sourdough toast ....

  6. my thai wife makes some of the best ciabatta bread I have ever tasted and she got the recipe from the internet just as she gets lots of western recipes online to give me some western food occasionally. Anyone trying to say that thais dont know how to cook western food is sadly mistaken, its more like they try to change the recipe to suit their own tastes. The food my wife cooks is brilliant and she does it all herself, I love to cook as well(father was a chef) but I do not interfere with what she does. As for ingredient costs, most of what she uses is obtained at the local markets so in reality it costs no more than thai food. Even when I cook I find most of my needs at the markets, fresh is always best. It doesnt take a genius to do it, just someone with  the enthusiasm to try, after all, everyone has to start somewhere and cooking is no different, teach your other halves to use the internet and then they can see exactly what it involves. My wife never tells me what she is cooking, she does it all herself with no input from me at all, everything she cooks is a surprise to me when I get to taste it.

Not being a person inclined/liking cook myseif - more like a kitchen survivor for many a year it astounds me how well and seeminly naturally these Thai gals can cook.....again - I am amazed at some farang food menu items in places that have very basic kitchen facilities with good results....

Mine's the same - she basically has me show her the first time (didn't say I couldn't - just don't like to) then she improvises & - success......

  7. The 90 day report is such a no brainer, requiring no money and no effort,
that there should have never been an original post about it, let alone all us idiots replying to it.

Hard to fault a man that knows how to speak for himself so appropriately.....I think any/all the useful information in this topic has been mined out......

Nope - but thanks for the offer.....when reading of the litany of regulation/visa/border/enforcements/enhancements/explanations and resulting fears voiced/penned by others I sat back nice and smug thinking - OK - everything's covered. Got the timing right for the next year while everything settles into place - or at least a more certain position/understanding/permanent/settled state.....

Then I head in for my 90 day and find out I'm 30+ days over - over half of which I'd been on the road away from "home ground" CM.....so it came as an unpleasant surprise as I try to be a good guest here.

Wife aside - all I can ever be in LOS is a good guest and do the things that are required and do them correctly.....so, yes, as a matter of fact - it was a shock to discover otherwise.....

In my mind I knew everything should be OK - but when the passport did not come back the 1st or the 2nd day it did cause me to pause and second guess the possible reasons.....

As more than a few people have noted it only takes one person in the wrong mood at the wrong time to create a whole bunch of trouble.....especially when they are as uncertain as we lately....

    Luckily all was OK.......

Why are you giving your passport to a service?
I stupidly missed my report by a couple of weeks and went in as usual.
They gave me the fine, reminded me not to be late again, and we all chuckled at my stupidity.
Total time, ten minutes. Non issue totally.

I believe that it is now mandatory for the passport to be present at immigration - before all the changes they just took copies and had me sign them......

  9. This is not only restricted to LOS.....many years ago I had the same happen to me in the US....went to one Dr that told me pneumonia and gave some meds.......a few days later I was basically carried into another Dr. who got it right...many weeks later I was back in to see him and he excitedly showed me my blood test - ??????? I asked him what he was showing me and why....his reply "you were less than 8 hours from the grave, you were so sick your body could not make any white blood cells - we stole you from the grave"

Hale and healthy in my 40's at the time....came from the AC in a meeting room in the San Jose area.....I'd had pneumonia once before which made me more succeptible to it.....now if I am anywhere and someone has a loose cough or watery sneeze I am long gone from them - as I understand it a sneeze travels at over 200 mph and atomizes a room very quickly.....

Glad you made it through - I've been there and it's not fun....even if I didn't know at the time how perilously close I'd come to my demise......

»...renewed the visa in May thinking May to August = 90 days...«

To my knowledge the 90 days counts from the date your “renewed” Visa-extension, as you have been given your address at that time. So they count at the Immigration office I use.

No, a visa "renewel" -- more properly "extension" doesn't reset the 90-day clock. The two are independent.

Is it any wonder that people pay a visa agent 1000 baht a year to do their 90 day reports for them?

This is where it gets skewed - even of you didn't go out of the country the math does not work out to keep the two the same....they would have to be in essence 92 day reports........

If someone were to stay 5+ years they could be 25 days off ......some offices might help with alert policies and personnel to make it a little more user friendly. CM is under-staffed and under sized + inundated most of the time....some of the staff are patient - others are not and it's a roll of the dice.....

Nancy is right - the two are independent of one another...two different processes with overlapping purposes and consequences.....

That's why I wanted to urge folks to double check - just in case.....sometimes the static makes it hard to concentrate on the message.....some like to strut - others are cock sure - still others don't deserve to have the sure part applied to them left on the sentence the way they portray/present themselves....but we're basically all in this together and all of us help to make the world a little more interesting.....wai.gif

Who does your visa? My lawyer chsrges 10k per year.

    Info sent to you.....

Do they do your visa for you?

Surely not for 1000 baht a year.

They don't pay the fine as they are 'friends' of one of the immigration officers.

Don't want to give you 90 more nervous days but aren't these services illegal?

They are perfectly within their rights to give you a stern look smile.png

Yes - they handle my once a year visa for me.....I posted 3 scenarios about the possible fine of which any could apply.....they run the 90 day reports for 1000 baht a year.....when I lived way out of town the diesel cost that much.....

No - these services are not illegal - the nervous days I created myself - didn't need your help for that - it was more about taking 3 days when it usually takes 1/2 to 1 day.....yep - every once in awhile a stern look is in order.....

  12.

(I was worried about being 120+ days...the form and photocopies are easy - CM immigration is like a 6 hour chaotic free for all starting with 4AM risings to fight for a place in line to grab a number when they open the door)

I've been in Chiang Mai for 3 years and on a retirement visa for 2 years. Have never spent more than 15 minutes at Chiang Mai Immigration doing 90-day report. And I always go at 1 P.M.

Glad you found a system - now you might have harpooned it.....some swear that 3:30 is the best time......many early rising mornings invested and the pulled numbers didn't come up until after the lunch break .....some afternoons were tried and ended up having to drive back in the following day.....a few years ago I was lucky to make some of the appointments online but those are booked many months in advance.....I've found it easier this way for me.......per people I've spoken with immigration actually prefers when a service handles it as the paperwork (visa, 90 day, other) is streamlined, sorted, and correct, it allows an officer to process many in a short time over the ebb and flow, emotions, poor manners, demands, and chaos that is the CM office....I've always felt badly for the counter people - by afternoon it's clear the day has taken a heavy toll....maybe it's better now that they've split off some of their services.....

  13. Reminder = that was my 1st question to them, it's usually sent out in an email which I chose as sometimes at the house there is signal drop at the phone and I have missed calls from time to time....they went to a computer and found that the email came back as undelivered....apparently they enter the address each time sent - not a chain - and had erred.....remember I went into the office thinking I was on time....

As to the fine - 3 things, immigration at one time gave an August date (120 days) maybe that was in their big books and they checked history and decided everything was OK ..... It's is possible because of the "lost face" thing on the email reminder the visa office took care of it ........It is also possible they paid it and will charge/bill me for it and I'm fine with that although I thought it would have happened when I picked up the pp - it's one of the few places I've found that it's OK if any money is due it can take place at any time during the transaction instead of up front.....

    No matter which.....glad it's done.....

  14. Bit hard to follow the wiring on the photo. So something to try. First go have a look at your meter and should see something spinning/moving.

Switch off your main incomer circuit breaker at your switchboard, then check the meter. If meter is still spinning/moving you have a freeloader between the meter and your switchboard. If this is the case it is something you can report to the supplier and they should understand if told in Thai.

    Cheers

If you have a water pump make sure you shut that breaker off too...if the pump is losing prime it can run longer and it will show on your bill but be a hidden source of electrical draw that might be unheard/not noticed.....

Okay, but we don't have a water pump. However, the 2 air cons and the hot water heater have large black switches.

Could they be on different breakers?

Normally they'd be covered by the main circuit breaker.. don't leave the main off for extended time - need for fridge....

Last week we were going into the CM Airport mall....there was a guy older than me with a nice looking gal in her 20's walking out......he stopped me and asked if I knew where he could get a suit to wear for one day to get married in stating that they were all too small and he didn't want to spend money to have a suit made (I'm 6'4" 240#) he was about 6'2" and portly.....I got the distinct impression he wished to borrow a suit from me to get married in......

I wished them good luck and we continued on our way......

I couldn't help but feel badly for the gal - a big day in her life and the guy wanted to borrow a suit from a stranger instead of pay 2000-5000B to look good on "their" special day......

It kind of gave me a glimce of their (her) future.....

Well. If you had thought more about it and possible asked your wife. She may have been able to tell the guy to go to the local wedding shop and hire one for 1,500b or so.

Sent from my XT1032 using Thaivisa Connect Thailand mobile app

Thanks CB - I did not know they have such a thing here....my wife didn't either - I guess the poor guy just picked the wrong people to ask.....when approached or asked - regardless of by who I try to give an earnest answer....he specifically mentioned he didn't want to spend around 2000B so maybe he had the answer all along to his question.....

I guess we live a sheltered life.....

Moral of the story should be "keep your business to yourself"  It's an indexed public forum that Thai officials are welcome to read and crack down upon.

I agree.....I posted to hopefully be of benefit to others to double check.....just in case....
