  1. The gun used in the latest shooting was a private legally registered pistol. However this part makes good sense... He also said he ordered police nationwide to step up measures to prevent rampage and seriously tackle illegal drug cartels of all sizes, especially those operating in communities.
  2. DHL - which the locals prefer - or Ninja might be good choices, if Kerry don't move at the moment; strange, Kerry is huge on Samui.
  3. An excellent place to look for a Honda Click would be the Honda dealer, situated in Maenam, about 5 kilometers from Bo Phut. Street View HERE (click on arrow upper left map map). There are numerous possibilities for renting something in the Bo Phut area - mind you, Bo Phut is huge and includes Chaweng, but you probably think of the area close to Fisherman Village and surrounding neighborhood - but with a 5k budget, if it's baht and per month, you shall look up in the smaller sois (streets) at the land side; however 10k baht a month would be more realistic to find something of a normalle acceptable standard for foreigners. I've marked one around 10k baht per month at the map in the link HERE, there might be several possibilities both in that area and on that side om the Ring Road, the main road around the island. If it's 5k baht per day your possibilities for accommodation increases a lot, you can even find beach front pool villas when in that level... You will find lots of both negatives and positives about Samui if you check the threads in the local forum - some hater the island, and some loves it - best thing is to check it out yourself for a few weeks or a month before you settle too permanently; and don't regard the monsoon season from October till December as all year round weather condition...????
  4. Yes, as @DrJack54 says, if you are staying in Thailand based on retirement-extension-of-stay and has a re-entry permit, you don't need to do anything; it was changed two years ago, so your initial TM30 is still valid, if you haven't moved. Staying temporary in a hotel is no problem, but remember to confirm your TM30-registered address when it's time in the 90-day system, and also insert your last entry, so the system updates, as the TM6 entry form is not used at the moment...????
  5. Try to look at the ASEAN NOW calendar - it's wrong - and that's what I'm saying, Lent is ending the 10th October...
  6. To be honest, I think you need to higher the salary, if you wish someone with a DL - minimum wage with Sunday off is close to 10k a month now - domestic work is considered low status job. As others have mentioned, get your wife to ask around, might have better luck that way, or find a migrant worker, for example from Lao; your wife should be able to apply for a 2-years work permit for a migrant maid.
  7. I'm supposed to be a Viking - my genetic profile says I am - Iceland is warmer than Scandinavia and from old time, there is a reason why Greenland was named green land - try northern Scandinavia instead...????
  8. To my knowledge, both parents needs to give permission - actually be present - to obtain a Thai passport; it's the same procedure for my home country where I need to bring the mother when renewing passport for my daughter; and her mother needs to bring me, to get a Thai passport for our daughter. Depending of age, you might be asked questions when a minor is leaving. You will need an authorization from the mother, an official letter issued at the amphor office, same department as issue ID-cards. It looks like this... If the child only has a Thai passport and leave by air, it might be a problem, if there is not a proper visa for the destination country, if a visa is normally required for Thai nationals.
  9. Hmm, according to the ASEAN NOW calendar Buddhist Lent is the 21st October - I've already planned my alcohol storage after that date...???? - whom to believe...
  10. When I came to Samui in 2001 - yes, I know it's late for an old hippie to arrive here, but unfortunate that's the facts - expats talked a lot about old time, which was 10-15 before, and that Samui had changed so much...???? Now I meet people that arrived here later than I, talking about "old time", which was 10-15 years before, and that Samui has changed so much, which it has; especially since I came here first time... I recently visited my home country - for a few days only - it had changed so much and too much for me, it was better in good old time, so I happily returned to Samui that had changed less...
  11. I'm an old hippie and retired early..., and moved to Thailand, so I didn't waste my life by staying in my home country and later being dependent of the old age system there. I've been partying here - i.e. Land-of-Smiles - for 17 years now and never regretted my decision for a moment...????
  12. You have no rights after three years. You cannot have legal written agreement on consecutively 3-year rental agreements. Any rental/lease agreement running more than three years and up to 30 years shall be registered at a Land Office and a smaller tax need to be paid for the whole registered period, the registration will be written on the land title deed as a servitude. In my opinion, if a long term rent/lease is not registered as servitude: Don't. You can find the rental/lease Law in English translation HERE...????
  13. Might be different in different Land Transport Offices, I can only use Thai ID, as I have a Yellow House Book registration as address verification and pink ID-card...????
  14. Wrong, you cannot show ID when required in the bank, if your passport is not the same as registered, if not changed within the last few years; I talk from experience. Try it yourself and post a feedback...????
  15. I'm not wrong, I'm referring to the costs mentioned in the article... A quick glance at the prices of solar rooftop system installation in Thailand started from: 83,500-85,000 Baht for a 1.5 kW system which would be enough to power 5 LED lightbulbs, a refrigerator, a television and an air conditioner Your 3-4 units a day for 1 kW fits nicely with my calculation of efficiency...????
  16. Remember to change your passport number everywhere it's used for identification, especially bank accounts, remember all bankbooks and both passports - Bangkok Bank might also need to change your bankbooks, as they are paired with your old passport number - furthermore your Driver's License might have your passport number, if you don't have a Thai ID-number, so it's advisable to get that changed also (costs about 200 baht). Furthermore loyalty cards might be linked to passport number - for exeampel Central's "The 1"-card, so if you need to get loyalty discount some shops might ask for your ID, i.e. your passport, and if that don't fit the card, no discount; so best do it all in one go...????
  17. As @DrJack54 says; however, you might not need an agent, if you are just little efficient into paperwork. If money is not an issue and you can afford it, deposit the 800k baht in a fixed deposit - i.e. 12 month fixed - for best interest, and never mix you extension-of-stay-deposit with other bank transactions. Keeping the fixed amount all year round makes you sleep well without thinking about about balance, topping up at correct time and maturing period. Withdraw interest annually the day after it's added to the account, so you keep a clean 800k balance, it's easy for the immigration officer to check. Use another Thai savings account for foreign transfers and daily transactions for expenses etc., so it's not mixed with your extension of stay deposit. I've been using this method for about 15 years now and it's easy, also the paperwork at the probably most strict immigration office in the Kingdom. You annually need a statement from the bank when applying for another year's extension of stay, I include both my fixed deposit account and my saving account for daily transactions, so my total is over 800k baht, and I show that I have foreign or other income for my living expenses. For re-entering, you can apply for a multiple re-enter permission at the same time as applying for annual extension of stay. It will cost you 3,800 baht and with that stamp in your passport you can exit and re-enter whenever you want within that year, without need for any other paperwork...????
  18. Calculated on a circa 85,000 baht 1,5 kW system, it seems to be about 8 years payback period - without interest and maintenance - if all electricity is used at a 5 baht rate and the system is in total 50 percent effective of it's rated capacity during all year round daylight time; or around 12 years if generated electricity is sold for 2.60 baht per unit (kWh)...????
  19. There might well be more to this incident than revealed in the news story... From the article: The duo operate a real estate business on the island and arrived last in Thailand earlier this year. [...] The men demanded that the couple pay them $3 million in cryptocurrency or the equivalent of ฿112.5 million but Mr Evgenii suggested that he did not have that amount of funds to hand. [...] Mr Abdullin told Ko Samui police that he agreed to pay over the money as he felt intimidated by the men and feared for his safety as well as that of his wife and family.
  20. I use an AIS SIM-card router with WiFi and two J45 connections as back bone to my fiber, it works well, and was affordable to and affordable subscription...????
  21. There is an official transfer counter in the arrival area just after you get your luggage. There might be metered taxis - don't expect them to drive on meter, expect instead 600 baht to 1.000 baht to Lamai Beach - waiting just outside the airport gate at arrival area.
  22. As @DrJack54 says, enter visa exempt and change to a non-immigrant O-visa when in Thailand, if you wish to stay for "extended / indefinite duration". I will recommend - if you can afford it - to deposit 800.000 baht in a fixed long-term (i.e. 12-month) Thai bank account, making both change of entry to non-O visa and later extensions of stay very easy. I've been using this method for 15 years now...
