  1. Fast forward to 2125. Assuming we haven't nuked everybody out of existence by then, historians will have to isolate the biggest single reason as to why the mighty imperial powers of Europe and America became failed nations in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. No doubt there will be very nuanced opinions covering this period, but history tends to want a simple and precise all-encompassing answer to most things. I have little doubt they will lay the blame ultimately on the femenization of society from circa 1960 - although they may hesitate to use that word for fear of being branded a misogynist. Before you throw me under the bus, consider the vast societal changes brought about by such things as: the birth control pill, equal pay, the demise of the nuclear family, a mother's absence from the home and drastic reduction in the number of women not even having one child, the replacement of men in government and business - and more recently, affirmative action, DEI and ESG. Historians might take the easy out and just say that 20th century manhumankind got wealthy, soft and decadent a la the Romans - the brave ones will point out that the biggest societal change that brought about our demise was the changing role that women played in the decision making compared to earlier generations. In every earlier society, women (and children) were most valuable and cherished, the very epicentre of the reason for societal success. That's why men fought wars to protect them. Nowadays, good luck with that.
  2. Interestingly enough, statistics are kept on acid attacks worldwide. Yeah, it really is a thing. Acid attack capital of the world is (drum-roll please).....The United Kingdom , followed by India and Bangladesh. On a per capita basis, the UK is in a class of its own. Thailand is way down the list with surprisingly enough, 10 attacks annually. Source: Acid Attack Statistics by Country 2025
  3. Sadly, the story is basically correct. Not just for the US, but for the entire Western world. We've spent 50+ years exporting jobs, skills and knowledge to China, S.E Asia and India. That sounds fixable - just build a new factory in Texas and make the stuff there. Employ locals, sell to America. Yeah, it don't work like that. Because we've also decimated our internal infrastructure - everything from an educated (and willing) labour force, the entire supply and logistics chain (especially sea vessels), not to mention the severe lack of capital or willing investors available to do so. Try to raise capital to build a billion dollar factory in Florida to make an identical factory in China redundant. The laws of risk/reward and supply and demand dictate that this can only happen over a very extended period of time, and at a very slow pace - somewhat similar to the pace at which we allowed China to but fark us. However, to counter my theory there is one possible reason to justify the spend - China's population is forecast to drop circa 50% in the next 75 years and they don't have any immigration. So they won't have anybody to punch a timecard by 2100. The US on the other hand has a reasonable birth rate due to rampant immigration. If it was only a numbers game, the US is winning on that score. However the US and entire Western population are ageing and as this continues, general demand for consumer products will decline. No doubt there are a host of actuaries, statisticians and accountants doing the long-term math on this entire problem. How long is a piece of string?
  4. This guy is an amateur at a piffling 90k. A few GoGo bars still display boards with their top-rated bar bins. From memory I think the highest I saw recently was north of 250K from somebody with a Korean sounding name. Mind you, the Korean actually paid the bin.
  5. Lack of spatial awareness - very common in Thailand.
  6. What wonderful modernization this truly is. I wonder if they'll ever get around to going uber -modern and renumber street addresses to the Napoleonic system. I mean after all, this is the 26th century.
  7. This is good news for the Americans!
  8. That's one of the many reasons I don't fly on any S.E Asian airlines. Pilots and maintenance staff not hired, trained or managed based on meritocracy. Or at best, employed on a meritocratic basis from an extremely limited selection pool based on ethnicity. Mind you, I don't go on Thai busses either.
  9. Sounds a bit dodgy. I suspect all three of the assailants were probably capable of peeing while standing up.
  10. First time I've heard of an airbag being deployed for a Pattaya Freefall Club wannabe. I bet it looks about the size of a postage stamp from anything higher than level 3.
  11. In 15 years I have never had to submit my passport AND my Thai licence for any reason whatsoever, except when applying for a replacement licence. I'd me more concerned about updating your new passport number with your bank and your Telecom provider, especially Bangkok Bank.
  12. Yeah, that's a first - I reckon it was written by AI. And I'm not sure what they mean by "uphold the city's reputation".
  13. The Russian must have left his Audemars Piguet Royal Oak at home.
  14. "While it is impossible to know for sure how deeply this distrust has set in among judges across the country, a number of judges in recent weeks have openly questioned the fundamental honesty and credibility of Justice Department lawyers in ways that would have been unthinkable only months ago." Of course, those on the left will perceive absolutely no irony in this statement.
  15. Or the dude in the extreme left lane at the red light that swings a u-turn in front of 5 lanes of waiting traffic. I've never done that (gulp), but it's been suggested to me that it's a very expedient manoeuvre.
  16. OP - Everything you mention is what I do. It allows you to buy THB as and when you want to take advantage of the exchange rate, as opposed to "having" to buy THB when you need to. I buy THB in small or large amounts multiple times weekly, or even daily - if the rate is actively moving positively. EDIT: You also need to hold your domestic currency in Wise to do the above. Otherwise you must initiate a payment transfer to Wise for each transaction. I usually dump my domestic currency into Wise in bulk once or twice a month, depending on my liquidity and ROI etc. The worst scenario is you get an average rate across a time period rather than buying in bulk on any one day. On several occasions I've converted THB back to my domestic currency because the THB strengthened and I had a surplus - make a quick $500, and then hope your currency strengthens. The transfers from Wise FX account to my Kasikorn bank are virtually instantaneous, even after banking hours and weekends/holidays. The Wise card is handy at supermarkets, malls etc. No fees. No good for ATM cash though, as the limits and fees are not practical. You can also get a Wise digital card - good for Lazada, shopee etc. Sidenote - when dicking around in the Wise app checking exchange rates of various currencies, be careful before you press the confirmation button. I once inadvertently bought a truckload of Kenyan Shillings. Luckily I got out of them after a week at a minor profit, about enough to buy a pack of Marlboros.
  17. Why is the media pretending that road signs mean anything more than a suggestion in Thailand?
  18. It's dropping because of the strong THB/USD cross rate and a recently declining USD gold price from an all time peak. The USD price of gold peaked circa USD3,500 a few months ago and is now hovering in a range of USD3,350 3,380 and looking to break USD3,400 My advice, don't chase the odd 50 buck price variation of gold - view gold as long term preservation of wealth as opposed to a commodity, and make your decision. Just remember that anybody holding a decent chunk of their wealth in gold is praying nightly for two things at once - rampant monetary inflation, and near-zero inflation. Neither can be true at the same time.
  19. That'd be Soi 6/1 and it probably weren't no lady.
  20. I suspect Cambodia won't be paying their latest PEA invoice.
  21. It looks about the size of a child's toy. And whilst I'll admit there are a number of interesting places on Walking Street, none of them could be considered legitimate military objectives. Another case of the BIB going OTT in the LOS.
  22. Be fair now - I seem to recall they won the first prize (or was it last prize) for the world's smallest member at a stunning 3.7". I wonder if there's any correlation or causation in these two statistics. Source: Penis Size by Country 2025
