A lot of Thais I know travel to Bangkok from Surat Thani Airport because the fares are so much cheaper than Bangkok Air and it avoids the long bus journey. There will likely be minibus services to the airport as there already are with the ferries. One's own car or even motorbike is also a possibility for those prepared to do it to save money. Just park it there for the return.

But people might be prepared to drive to Surat Thani airport and fly from there. Apparently much cheaper fares from there to BKK.

You say they don't get damaged. I have a plastic one set the cement in a tiled floor. About fourteen years old. The plastic has deteriorated and broken away where the screws hold the socket. Now I have to try and get the old box out from the cement to replace without damaging the ceramic floor tiles. I wish they had installed a metal one.

I think the caché of being employed as aircrew has long gone. Lower pay, cost cutting, creation of low cost airlines etc. The reality of the job is it's not that great anyway. Many aircrew were probably stuck in a rut. Pushing them out, and thereby forcing them to look for different work? I doubt many are keen to return unless there are massive pay increases and better job perks. Personnel shortages across the industry from baggage handlers all the way up is a large part of the problem.
