Are you going to die within the next 7 years?
phetphet replied to gargamon's topic in ASEAN NOW Community Pub
In a few months there will no doubt be an article along the lines of: "Doctors report an increase in death and injury among the elderly. Related to falls caused by them trying to stand on one leg." -
Is police corruption in Thailand the same as elsewhere?
phetphet replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
Not corruption, but when our little one was about five or six, she once asked as we were driving along, why do policemen alway drink beer, eat pizza and play cards? Don't know where she got that from. Mind you, she might be sharper than me. Whenever she saw a temple fair, she used to point and shout, "Look! Monk party! ???? -
i used the camera on my computer. Sat in front of it, holding my passport open at the info. page, alongside my face and took the shot. Example here: https://support.bitkub.com/hc/en-us/articles/4409212932237-How-to-prepare-pictures-and-upload-the-additional-verification-documents-on-Bitkub-website-in-case-your-Thai-national-ID-card-was-too-blurry-or-unclear

Some are careful drivers, but in general I find Thai drivers to be inconsiderate and have a real Me Me attitude. I think it's due to a lack of both proper driving lessons and road policing. Everything from overtaking on bends or before the prow of a hill, to just parking their car in the middle of the road while they pop into 7-11. They drive how they like without fear of any likely punishment.

Are jeans and chinos adapted to Thailand ?
phetphet replied to Baron Samedi's topic in ASEAN NOW Community Pub
Shorts every day here in Samui. The only time I wear trousers here is to fly back to UK, or if we go to a fancy restaurant. Which is very rare. I have a couple of pairs of lightweight, loose linen trousers, which are fairly comfortable. How the young Thais and Burmese can walk around in this heat in those skin tight stretchy jeans, I don't know. -

Bear in mind the Chinese are forcing many citizens into lockdown due to Covid. This may impact the logistic services the same as we are seeing worldwide.

Air con on in room before bed to cool. Switch off when go to bed and just have a fan blowing. In this hot weather, I normally wake around 2:30 and turn it on again for 10-15 minutes. Tips. put something along the bottom of the bedroom door if there is a gap. It's surprising how much cold air escapes there. Also. If you are waking up dehydrated, put a saucer of water in the room to help slow the air drying. Other things that can cause you to wake up dehydrated, are eating late, eating carbs like bread and biscuits, salty foods, and lots of sugary thing. That of course leads to diabetes. Get tested if worried. And certainly not drinking enough water during the day in this hot weather.

Cleaning detergent for Tile (& glass) bathroom?
phetphet replied to aldriglikvid's topic in DIY Forum
I have read some of these cleaning fanatics use a paste of white vinegar and baking baking soda for shower glass. Here is a link to one such recipe: https://homelikeyoumeanit.com/how-to-clean-shower-doors-with-vinegar/ -
Two Indian Men Die In Koh Samui Motorbike Accident
phetphet replied to webfact's topic in Koh Samui News
I have seen quite a few motorbike accidents and near misses since post pandemic tourism increased here in Samui. Including three in one day. Even seen a couple of them where they shoot straight out of the bike shop, with no control and floor the bikes. The number of nervous riders wobbling along, clearly having no idea of how to ride is up, Inexperience or none at all is likely the cause of most of these accidents. Also worth bearing in mind the crazy minibus and taxi drivers are back out in force. Particularly bad when flights or boats are arriving. -
More than over the top. I think he must be a little scared of contracting C19. As someone who is triple vacc'd, I don't recall any medical advice to keep on getting further vaccines to date. Unless he has an unknown condition that leaves him susceptible to infection, I can't see the point. Maybe as Health Minister he is privy to information us plebs don't get.

Thai Elite visa tax issues
phetphet replied to alexanderhu's topic in Thai Visas, Residency, and Work Permits
I haven't read through the whole thread so I don't know f this has already been mentioned. Just a suggestion. If one have any savings in a Thai bank account that are earning interest, and the bank imposes a withholding tax on that interest, I have seen others apply for a Tax ID number to reclaim that interest. Perhaps you could get one using that method, then go from there. HTH. -

+1 for invadeit. Highly recommend. -
Wine is expensive here due to high taxes. Taking account of the nightmare traffic in Bangkok, you may end up using the BTS and MRT transport systems more than any Uber or regular taxi driver. That will be more convenient and less cost. Personal trainers? You can probably negotiate price. Variable. But you might also have to factor in gym costs. Thai language tutors? Maybe better to join a school. After the gym and Thai lessons, it's all that other free time during the day that you will have to have to price in for the two of you. Seeing as all other costs (insurance etc) are separate, what you plan is possible, but I reckon you will change those plans once here and experience the reality. The other thing going in your favour might be the USD getting stronger as it is forecast to do. Good luck with your aims.

The northern end of Chaweng is definitely looking a bit busier now. Still nowhere near pre-pandemic levels.
