Safety for solo travellers in the Philippines
kingstonkid replied to coralia's topic in Philippines General Chat
OP not sure where you are from but here is the Canadian risk warning. These are updated on a regular basis and are reliable https://travel.gc.ca/destinations/philippines -
That is the tourist part of Pattaya. That would be like comparing living in NANA to living in the suburbs of Bangkok. I do not know anyone that lives in Bangkok but am willing to be that most people that live in Pattaya don't go near beach road or walking street. It is the same if you live in any big city most people do not do the tourist <deleted> after maybe the first week or 2.

The UK us have a huge border issue. Not only withe people but drugs as well. There really is no way to completely solve it but closing the borders is a good start. Also get rid of soft cover tractor trailers. Go back to aluminum and make the drivers responsible for the closing and locking. Give the drivers the keys and then immigration can search at will. Borders serve the same purpose as doors on houses.

We seem to forget the o ne important thing about this country. People only learn about outside history online. Therefore depending on where you look Hitler was a genius or a mass murder or Psychopath. The same with Dahmer. Many Thais have no understanding of why Kanchaburi is so important to Dutch Aussie and other commonwealth people. There knowledge of WW2 is simply dates not actually what happened or who was involved.

Operators Promises Safe Halloween Festival on Khao San Road
kingstonkid replied to webfact's topic in Bangkok News
That is more of a court case and police. If you remember the government attempted to regulate the bars to have the correct exits the problem is that so many of them are so old that there is no way they can build it in. Imagine trying to get fire exits at NANA plaza inside the entertainment area or the bars n cowboy. -
The point that has to be remembered is that before you can get married even man woman you need permission from your country stating that you are free to marry. This could and will be a stumbling block I am sure. Also remember with all the hoops that a married couple on a married visa have to go through it is going to be hard to do marriage of convenience for a same sex couple.

Ottawa Thai Embassy Not Helpful
kingstonkid replied to Canadian Snowbird's topic in Thai Visas, Residency, and Work Permits
Do you live in Ottawa or Toronto? If you do, one thing you might try is going to the embassy or the consulate. Besides that, if nothing happens there, then by all means, come here and get the VOA they are simple to receive. As to staying longer, it is not that difficult to get them extended. -

There may not be as many and it may seem completely different to us. But to many Thais, I am sure they are looking for assurance. Remember a lot of what politicians do is for the show to make people feel better. The fact that he is doing this and is taking action is what people want to see and hear. On the flip side if he did nothing and something small happened no matter what people would be asking why he did nothing. -
That is the key that a lot of gamblers forget. If you are winning either one of 2 things happens your luck changes and you start to lose or you keep winning which usually means you are cheating or have a system that the casino will not like. People seem to forget that there are many off the books card games and gambling in the west. Also think back a few decades to the sports books and the card games/ casinos that ran in the west. This is nothing new we sometimes forget that Thailand is still in the early stages of development. There is a part of thought that you can compare Thailand now to let's say the days of the mob in the U.S and England.

Yannawa District Superintendent removed from his position
kingstonkid replied to snoop1130's topic in Bangkok News
I thin that you are going to see a lot of the mid-top cops that are shady getting charged and released. The big thing is that the new guy came in with the mantra of no corruption. Therefore anyone who is stupid enough to bring attention to themselves is going to get hung out to dry as show pieces to say see we are doing it. -
Bangkok governor faces his first setback from the City Assembly
kingstonkid replied to snoop1130's topic in Bangkok News
I understand that but as you said there should have been a pricing system set before Unfortunaltey the great one decided that he wanted to be a hero and make it free. Even though it was not his decision to make. Every system has an increasing fare rate based on distance, -
Kenny, I agree that she needs a psychologist. I have both one prescribed pills and the other is the one ai talk to for counselling. Have you thought about the church or other organizations? A Thai person no matter how good a psychologist they are is not going to be able t help her as they will not be able to understand the difference in lifestyle between Thailand and Aus. Hell reading here I am not sure many Aussies understand lol. Go online also it might not be a bad idea to take her to a counselor and see maybe they can recommend someone. Also talk to the Thai communities in the different cities in Oz I am sure she is not the first o person to have trouble acclimatizing

At some point, the idea of quitting while they were ahead should have kicked in. If anyone remembers the good old days of Vegas, people back then that won too much money were convinced that it was not a good thing. Looking at the game it seems that it would be a great game for card counters and we know what they thought of and can all remember what happened to people that were counting. Legal casinos do not like to lose. I am sure that the illegal ones really hate to lose and really have no worries about what they do. Imagine getting into a back room poker game and winning and they find out you are cheating them in the west?

It is rather interesting that we condemn the Thai police and say it is all their fault. I am not naive enough not to know that things like this happened in Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal. Back the heyday Yonge street used to have almsot everything. Police around the world are being caught for corruption. Governments are being accused of corruption. It was not that long ago that cities like Chicago were rampant with the corruption of officials at all levels. London I believe also faced these issues. When the politicians and people in high government are seemed to be gray then it is hard to convince people that it is wrong to try for the same thing. The fact tht in the past year we have seen more high ranking RTP being charged and their wealth being brought to life says that there may in at least some small circles be a willingness to address this issue. I seem to remember that when BIG JOKE came onto the scene in his immigration hat that people here were highly appreciative and supportive of his measures. Now he is being painted as a part of the problem without anyone having any proof that this is so. Personally considering how much he cleaned up NANA and other areas as well as the fact that he has made a difference and is not liked by the powers that be I tend to give him the benefit of the doubt. These may seem like small steps but lets at least applaud the attempt to correct this error.

Anyone want to bet this place was on the list that was given to Big joke. RTP is going to have to go after these now that it is in the open. You can not fire someone until after it is proven in court. Therefore you remove the person from the area and let independent (?) parties look into it. -
Bangkok governor faces his first setback from the City Assembly
kingstonkid replied to snoop1130's topic in Bangkok News
The challenge is that there needs to be an agreement between the different parties involved, those of BMA and of Bangkok, about a reasonable price increase. You can not run a business based on prices that are not realistic. You can not charge the same fair from Mor Chit to Phrom Pong as you do KhuKot to Prom Phong. That would be like saying ok let's charge just the cost of going from Bangkok t Tokyo and making the Bangkok leg free. The Khu Kot part of the line is busy and full on most rush hour trains. They are doing what they wanted. The question is if they raise that cost will it hurt the number of riders and the answer is NO. Most of us ride the BTS for convenience. Before it was get a van to take us to Morchit (40 baht average) and take a long crowded van ride then fight the crowd at Mor chit. Getting home from Morchit to Rangsit or Victory to Rangsit was even worse time-wise and long cues for vans. If the raise in price is reasonable, then people will not complain as much. What people will complain about is if the quality of the trains or the service deteriorates due to BMA not being able to provide the same care and staffing. -
I take it that you are relatively new to Thailand. Big Joke is probably one of the most honest cops that the country has as well as having a reputation that you do not mess with him and he gets the job done. The people have a lot of faith in him and probably if he ran for PM he would win in a landslide.

The people running the government are the same ones that operate the big businesses.
