  1. The two swords of the samurai, katana and wakizashi, are together known as daisho and are worn inserted in the belt with the edge facing upwards. The myanmar guy uses the wakizashi sword. The shorter one.
  2. In some countries, even Thailand, this problem would need the input of the local mafia or triads who would intervene where the police would not or could not. Buy the squatters some tables in restaurant to show good faith and the squatters would then exit the house without losing face. Asian style problem solving.
  3. Nowadays even if camera cctv has no power supply or internet wifi, you can use a SIM card solar powered camera to monitor remotely your remote farm or house.
  4. More and more self entitled people with their ‘sahib’ attitudes towards locals. Where is the graciousness nowadays. ?
  5. I disagree. Thais are still ‘greng jai’ as it is so ingrained in their culture. It depends upon where your social interaction is. There is a patronage culture in Thai society.
  6. These are from lower social strata people… like all over the world. Thai middle class and above behave themselves well . You cannot tar all Thais with the same brush. however so called expats are supposed to be of higher status and thus at expected to behave in public especially towards lower status Thais.. be mindful.
  7. Udom you are correct. Defensive driving at all times, spatial awareness spider sense on, expect the worst of Thai drivers and overcompensate for their lack of driving skills. Moreover NEVER drive on unfamiliar rural surroundings at night time.
  8. If you want to live a long happy retirement life in Thailand , you got to take Thailand’s social and economic standards into account and cut it some slack. Cheap living is just what it is… together with the accompanying frustrations. You just cannot implant your home country’s living and social standards into Thailand.
  9. Life is cheap in Thailand thus the nonsense of non helmet wearing. Insurance payout is also cheap. Add the notion of karma and low social economic factors to it and you got a potent mixture of accidents just waiting to happen.
  10. Maybe Thais ride motorbikes out of necessity due to social environment? I have seen rural school kids barely out of their teens on motorbikes to school, motorbikes carrying people and goods way out of their capacity, villages way out of public transport routes and others.
  11. Simple. The police just bring the footage and show local people in the brawl area to identify these trouble makers as they surely frequent these areas in ungodly hours.

  14. Well somebody got to sell the booze and as a buddhist , selling is as bad as consuming it.
  15. Burmese in Thailand can be rich Burmese residing in Thailand taking care of family wealth. Rich Burmese park a portion of their wealth overseas in case. Their country may be poor but the top tier of any poor countries are still wealthy as wealthy distribution is not uniform in those countries unlike EU. Countries like Bangladesh Indonesia myanmar Cambodia can be poor but their top tier society are wealthy owning many businesses and large tract of land due to their networking .
  16. Maybe making merits in his twilight years to atone for his sins…. ?
  17. It is the suppressed male hormones exploding like a volcano when it peaked. Bolstered by the fact that they were cut some slack. The fact that they are always armed with a stiletto shoe helps too.
  18. Stiletto is basically a blunt ice pick in structure… so you get a bigger hole on your head when hit only not as deep.
  19. Thai roads are a danger for driving at night. Twin trailer truck are a menace on winding roads especially lamphang highland. I always try not to drive at night on rural hilly terrain if possible. For a long distance trip up north from Bangkok to chiangmai or chiangrai , try to have a pit stop at a transit hotel after 4/5 hours driving. Having a good night rest is essential too. A good back up plan is having a missus along to drive if feeling too tired . Works well for me for more than 25 years of living in Thailand. If thailand has less than adequate road conditions and doggy drivers, work to our benefit to have a preemptive attitude and situational awareness at all times. take care out there …
  20. It is sad that the medical hospital industry were controlled by private corporations whose motto is to make money above all else. Same all over the world .
  21. Given that the hospital name was made public, it is a serious loss of face in the medical industry.
  22. Thais afraid of being blamed as the cause of the accident which is not unusual in Thailand but they hang around to make sure help is coming for you.
  23. Respect and appreciate those working to make your life easier. My mooban has 26 security personnel total and every one earns my respect and annual gift of appreciation. Do not treat others lower in status with contempt. everybody has a role to play in life. Karma can be a bitch.
  24. Imagine life with her 24/7 . No wonder he disappeared that night.
  25. Self entitlement person treating a person of lower social status. Thais can be unpredictable in their reactions. They react first before thinking. There are a few cases of the workers killing their bosses during disputes too.
