  1. I routinely get cheated, scammed, and called 'farang', but as long as she does it with her clothes off, I try not to complain too much.

Has it ever crossed your mind they are people not wanting to have any contact with the sex industry and they just get plainly ripped off on a daily basis on the sole reason they're from here?

  2. I hear about, and read, on a daily basis, of foreigner who are getting ripped off here and there, very often by their girlfriend/wife, but also in regular business relationships, how can you have missed that?

    You've read??!!

    You've heard??!!

Jesus, what is wrong with you people?

Calm down, yes, there are many foreigners who are getting treated badly, do I say that every one of them would have not being ripped off or scammed, had they not being referred to as an object (that is Farang), hell no!

But do I see a clear connection between the constant need to refer to us as "farang", rather than humans, and many problems we face here on a daily basis, hell yes!!

The thing is, here most people's interaction with Thai is through the hospitality industry: They go to farang dedicated pubs/bars/restaurants /clubs where the staff are trained to pleased farangs.

They just have no clue of what going on outside their buble

  3. Ok perhaps the poor, oppressed, downtrodden among you can give us a few examples of how they've been treated badly by the Thais.

    Lemme just expand on this:

Just how does being called, described or treated as a "farang" in Thailand blight your existence?

Are you unable to walk down the street without packs of pitch-fork-wielding locals pursuing you?

Do the Thai lovelies in the bars you frequent recoil in horror at the merest hint of "impropriety"?

Do you receive poor service at restaurants while the locals - well, the ones who can afford to eat at higher-end establishments - are treated like demi-gods?

    Just askin'

I usually get price doubled for one.

I often get served last also.

I sometimes do not get served at all

  4. I generally dislike police, but laugh at how cheap it is here to deal with them. It's not a big deal. 100b. Yes, I know it's principle, but it's easier just to pay them and be on your way. Smart to have 100b note ready at all times for moments like that to speed up the process. I always keep a 100b note in the folder copy of my passport. When I get pulled over by the police on my bike (for whatever reason) and they ask for ID, I give them the copy, they take the 100b and send me on my way. Easy peasy.

Corruption is a way of life here. Everyone does it. Join the party and use it to your advantage when you can. Think how much it would cost in your home country. 100b - 200b is laughable when you really consider what is happening.

It's that type of attitude that encourages bigger awful extortion such this Australian couple whose wife was killed by a traffic offender and instead of trying to give justice to the poor bereaved boyfriend, the cops took his passport put him in prison and demanded 15 000 dollars to release him.

  5. I can't believe you think such a normal trifle is worth your time even posting here, much less getting your blood pressure up.

This is the way things work here, making a fuss about it as a barely-tolerated guest will only get you real trouble, believe me they can do whatever they like if you make enough enemies with real power.

Check out Singapore, I hear they care a lot more about rule of law of there.

Isn't this scaring anyone else ?

  6. I cannot believe this thread keeps appearing....it is so ridiculous....get a grip, only weak and easily offended people would be that bothered about this....you are in a foreign country, they don't have to abide by YOUR values etc.......

You are very naive, ignorant and shallow. You simply do not grasp the problems associated with you being an object.

Let me guess, you are 19 years old, and have visited Thailand in total of 2 months, and you love to party in the bars all the time, of course it is funny to be "farang".

However, when you are turning 40, and have been here for many years, you will hopefully begin to see connections between how Thais sometimes treats foreigners, that is, not always in a good way. Sure it can happen anyway, but it do happen alot more because the constant notion is us being an object, rather than human

Ok perhaps the poor, oppressed, downtrodden among you can give us a few examples of how they've been treated badly by the Thais.

Good point in theory but giving examples here is a can of worms unfortunately

  7. Like they say "Don't sweat the small stuff". I have been here quite a while and I have noted that the normal Thai ability to bounce back from rudeness from Farangs seems to be wearing thin. Maybe it is the large influx of boorish rude Russians, I don't know. I know I wince at some of what they do. I taught myself a decent amount of Thai. I have to laugh at my American friends who complain about immigrants to USA who "won't even learn English!" "Oh, and do you speak Thai?" of course they don't, think they don't have to. Seems if you make the effort to learn to communicate, don't hold all Thais personally responsible for everything that isn't like "back home" and put a touch of humor into living here, things will be just fine. Compare the +'s and the -'s. If +>-, stay. If not, move on. Or shut the hell up.

Some of us have ties/families/jobs/obligations here.

What's wrong in trying to better the place we live in?

Plus if your rule (if you don't like leave) applies to this topic, you don't have

    a/ to read it

    b/ to write in it

Well Kitsune the real thing is this:

This is TVF and the object it to get as many posts in as possible.

The quick way to achieve that objective is by a troll type post to wind a few folk up.

BINGO, loads of replies are then possible and the number count rises and gives the poster a sense of power and glory.

Another way is to "Quote" someone else's post and add +1 rather than apply a like.

Some even put + more than 1...... and they impress me no end.

Don't argue with idiots. They'll drag you down to their level and beat you...

I'm sorry I have offended you.

I am not trying to wind up anyone

My posts are only reflecting TV posters' opinion and you can do a search on "Farang" here and you will find many topics on the subjects.

  9. <Thai language removed>

From your responses Kitsune- you have either been living in the wrong places and have no chances to assimilate with Thai people OR you have absolutely more time on your hands than you should have !!

Yeah of course it's my fault.

It's me who has a problem not them

I am the only one feeling like this, and no one on this forum has never made a topic about being called a farang

  10. To be honest, I think alot of farangs in Thailand are simply hypocrites. When you're back at home in Scotland, UK, mid-west USA or wherever, having a pint at their local pub, don't tell me you treat immigrants who struggle with the English language 100% the same as you treat a full-blooded countryman. You can't tell me you don't view them in a different light.

So of course it's the same in Thailand, except the tables are turned, and we're the immigrants. Sure I get treated differently due to being an immigrant, but that's fine with me. There's good and bad sides to that. As long as everyone treats me with the same level of common respect that I show them, then I'm more than happy. And for the most part, I can say that's what happens 95% of the time with neighbors, friends, etc. No complaints here.

    You are right

It's a topic that has never been debated here on TV and no one else has a problem with it.

  11. I think that it doesn't matter what country you are in,if it isn't your native country then your will always be the foreigner !!!

I have lived in The Netherlands for 13 years,I speak Dutch, eat Dutch and live Dutch but am and always will be Shaggy the Englishman to them. (and rightly so)

At the end of the day it doesn't matter what people call you or think of you,if you are happy with your life, have people that love you and you have good health.... then nothing else matters.

Yes sure but do they address/refer to you as such and make sure they mention you foreign status in every sentence ?

No they don't mention my foreign status in every sentence.......probably because I can understand everything that they are saying.

Try it pretending you don,t know Thai.

A friend had a taxi drive into the back of him, they difn,t know he coukd speak Thai, they all kept saying why shoukd he worry Farang got money he can pay for it.

Yep that's the best translation of the word so far : Someone to ripp off / extortionate

Double pricing and dollars signs are what I see in their eyes when they call me Farang

oh don't worry about that here ! Farangs get to be called farangs even / especially when they understand what they say.

But it's OK farangs are a different breed so it's ok to be rude and talk about them right in front of them

  13. So, once more, the term Farang is not meant in a derogative way.

    Not as in:

    - "Kraut" for a german.

    - "Limey" for an englishmen.

    - "Greaser" for a mexican.

    - "Gook" for asians in general.

    Comprende?

    Cheers.

I don't care if it means Princess or Piece of dirt, I just don't want to be reminded Im not from here every second

  14. We never pretended to be anything else than farang.

That's the constant reminder that gets tedious.

In our home country we don't constantly remind Thai immigrants they are not from there.

Why do we have to put up with it?

you dont have to put up with it, however in what way are you constantly reminded that you are a farang, by being called a farang.

Should they stop being thai and change their language, because farang is simply the word they use.

The only way someone can remind you is if you have forgotten.

changing the language would be trying to put a different word on us

No need for that, just treat us as a normal human being.

They don't constantly refer as themselves as being KhonThai, why would we be treated differently?

But that's just the point isn't it?

Foreigners want to be treated differently.

They want the respect and elevated status they believe their relatively superior wealth ought to entitle them to. They love the "special" attention and treatment they receive from Thai totty at the local boozer but raise hell when the local moto-taxi inflates their fare by a measly 10 baht.

Isn't it ironic that so many on TV cite "Political-correctness-gone-mad" as one of the reasons for quitting their homelands yet, here they are in Thailand, railing against the use of an innocuous word the locals use to describe non-Thais while ignoring the fact that most Thais don't consider the word to be offensive or derogatory because most foreigners don't consider it offensive or derogatory.

The point here is that, given the locals will go to extraordinary lengths to avoid causing offence and confrontation, it stands to reason that if Thais thought that the word was injurious to foreigners, they wouldn't use it.

That was back 10 years ago

Now they service tourists for money, the more money you have the more respect you get.

I have always fell uncomfortable to be treated as superior and I certainly don't like being treated as inferior.

  15. Get a Soi dog with hair extensions. Do something for the dog problem in Thailand.

    What soi dog problem ?

As far as I see they disappear from every soi, with China/Vietnam's restaurant menus as a destination.

    Problem solved

  16. Irish setter ?

I believe it's a long hair dog, which is really not fair here with the heat, unless you have it cut short.

Plus it's the type of dog that needs to run a lot.

It means dog walking 3/4 times a day.

    Soi dog ?

    Yes get a smallish one.

That's the constant reminder that gets tedious.

Why do we have to put up with it?

I have some Thai's that live near me in the UK and they still use the word Farang when talking about the locals to them it must just mean Not Thai i dont think it's in there head to use any other word.

    Why use a different word?

    Aren't we not humans?

Why constantly make a difference ?

To quote Depeche Mode "People are People"

I'm also not happy the way farang is treated in Thailand, but you don't need to put up with it if you don't want.

You can leave at any given time.

Oh goodie the "TV if you don't like it here, you should leave brigade" is back

    I've missed you !

I would be glad to be a person just a lambda human being.

Why the need to remind me and everyone else that I am not from here every time they address me?

do you really think thats what they are intending when they say farang, of coarse they are not.

Farang means the white face from abroad, ie you are not from here, ie not entitled to Thai nationas priviledges.

It does not mean Welcome to Thailand, you are different but I'll treat you the same as everyone

  23. You shouldn't be surprised at the negative reactions to the OP, considering how many of them failed with equitable partnerships in their home countries. Most of them came here to buy women, one way or another.

    Have to agree unfortunately.

    You are in get-a-cheaper-younger-more submissive-wife-Land.
