Yes it's possible to park in the city, in general. Traffic can be bad in CM too at rush hour along a few major arteries. City "center" is usually understood as the area inside the moat, a square-shaped canal that you can easily see on maps. Unless you want to see temples and tour agents and rental places and backpackers all the time, better avoid it. Other magnet areas for tourists are Nimmanhaemin road and Doi Suthep. ChangKlan/Night Bazar used to be but currently dead. Plenty of interesting places to see just outside the city. Shopping malls nice but nothing special if you come from BKK. Also don't expect too much of night life. The airport is inside the city area, planes can be noisy try to avoid staying under their take off route unless in a place with soundproof windows. Pollution is really bad mid-Feb to April, rest of the year quite ok. As a general recommendation: IMO the beauty of CM is in the kindness of the people, low crime, good food, nice garden cafes and restaurants, relaxed life compared to comparable sized cities. Also the fact that you can do 3-4 errands in the time it takes to do maybe 1 in BKK. Try to savor that, and not be a typical Tripadvisor tourist.

Chiang Mai non-o child extension problem
arithai12 replied to ChaiyaTH's topic in Thai Visas, Residency, and Work Permits
OP, you seem to have some attitude towards the CM IO, perhaps that is not the best way to deal with them. Anyway, to clarify your doubts, you could see a reputable agent. e.g., Star Visa has two locations in CM, I visited once the one behind BigC/Index for child-related issues, they seemed very knowledgeable and professional. As for your other issues with tax and cannabis, I don't think that moving to another place in Thailand will change much. -
Bangkok Submerged with Record Rainfall in Phra Khanong District
arithai12 replied to webfact's topic in Bangkok News
Your comment makes no sense and is factually wrong. -
I wish you luck OP. Just one comment in addition to all other replies: if they really need you, it's them (the Gym) who have to find out what is needed, not you. Because of language, and because they will be held legally responsible for things done wrong. They obviously have never hired a foreigner before, so chances are that they have no clue. When I was hired by a reputable and relatively large research organization many moons ago, I was their first foreigner, and I cannot tell you how stressful the learning process was for them - and for me in the first year.

Former PM Thaksin Shinawatra to be eligible for parole next year
arithai12 replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
Since you bring up the subject of intelligence, please note that the bloke who inherited many years ago shares of a TV company should have known very well after the Future Forward leader episode that they were poisonous, that they were worth nothing, and had all the time to get rid of them but preferred to keep blogging and taking selfies. You tell me the IQ level. -
Hotel worker accused of attacking female guest due to late payment
arithai12 replied to webfact's topic in Bangkok News
Except when you don't have enough cash for an unexpected expense. Back to OP, whatever her reasons for not paying on the spot, the hotel worker was completely out of place. He's only an employee, he has her ID details from check-in, just report her. -
Prevention of swimmer's ear (external ear infection)?
arithai12 replied to Lorry's topic in Health and Medicine
Ear plugs didn't work for me. However I solved the problem by applying coconut oil, which by the way is good to apply also on the skin. Another option is to change pool, if you can. -

Money requirements for retirement visa
arithai12 replied to Sue A's topic in Thai Visas, Residency, and Work Permits
OP, I am surprised by your account (excuse the pun). I have a fixed deposit account with BKB since many years, like you always untouched except for adding interest. It comes with its own orange-colored passbook. At extension time (ret), I got to my branch, in a few minutes they issue the required letter for Immigration, 100B. AFAIK, the letter from Bangkok with associated extra time and charges is required when your 800k are in a normal checking account (blue passbook), with deposits and withdrawals during the year. I suspect the problem lies not with BKB in general, but rather with your specific branch. Do you live in a city with more than one branch? Perhaps find one in which they have some clue. -

Thai health minister backs cannabis ban, citing surge in teen usage
arithai12 replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
If you are referring to MFP as what people voted for (which strictly speaking is not correct), then please note that Mr Pita made the reversal on cannabis one of his announced policies. -
Just to be clear, the article states that the 2-weeks salary payouts has been proposed by PT and welcomed by MFP, so please bash both if you must. The issue of personal debt runs very deep, and doesn't start with this gov't or the previous or or or. Thais who get a job with a guaranteed salary are usually subject to a lot of pressure to show off with friends and family by buying the most expensive things they can (not) afford, eg new car, house, phone, of course on installments. They also are expected to provide contributions to parents and extended family. In short, they start indebted from day one. This is a problem of mentality, not of long term gov't plans. The 30% requirement by MFP is honorable but in practice will achieve no improvements if the mentality does not change.
-
I should not think you will have problems because of your absence, provided you have a re-entry already in your passport (as you say) and that you have the financials in order (eg kept 800k in the bank or whatever variations of this requirement). Depending on your local IO flavor, you may have to update your TM30 after coming back - apparently now possible online.

Apple removes app created by Andrew Tate

I agree in general about the woke trends, but I don't understand why you say that JD lost millions and career. As far as I remember, it was the "lady" who lost both. JD was splendid through the trial, good for him, just difficult to understand how he could fall for her. We men are prone to let the smallest of our two brains take the lead sometimes. -
Well, but it does need time to bake, right? And time to clean it. And takes space in the kitchen. When I lived in Europe, I had a small bread machine, it worked nicely but eventually I gave up for a number of reasons. To each their own.

OP, you mention Nana (rightly so) and that it's sold out before you get there... a) there are several locations, one of them is in Airport Plaza which opens at 11... what time do you rise? b) at the branch that I use near Wat Jed Yod it is possible to reserve and collect at your leisure. I also like bread from Choquette in Maya (french style baguette, not sure about non-white flour versions) And the bakery at the entrance of Tops in Central Festival has an excellent choice of various bread types... good for late-risers too.

how to handle request of " no income declaration" from Thai authorities
arithai12 replied to fvw53's topic in General Topics
"obviously" is a bit misleading. You mean, if he was working he obviously would have a TIN number. However, even as a retiree not having any fixed income in Thailand, it is entirely possible to obtain a TIN number. I am retired, I declare income in Thailand from money I transfer from abroad, even if I don't really have to under current rules if the money was earned prior to the current year. This way, I pay a ridiculously low income tax in Thailand, and as I am a tax resident here I don't need to pay any income tax in my home country - showing TIN and tax declaration, similar to what is being asked from the OP. -
Weighing passengers to become standard for Bangkok Airways
arithai12 replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
Standard practice already decades ago for airlines flying small aircrafts (like 2 or 3 seats/row, twin propeller), in the S. Pacific where a graceful lady averages around 130kg, or in Siberia where people wear very very heavy clothing. It was about total aircraft weight and distribution, they don't make you pay more if heavier.
