  1. Does anyone know where he lived in Bangkok? I first became aware of Sobrajh and his crimes after reading a Time Magazine (I think) article about him in Bangkok on my first visit there in 1985.
  2. Up until around 2006 there was still 24 hour opening in Thailand (as there still is in Cambodia). I've never really been a late drinker anyway. Although quite recently Queen's Park Plaza, Sukh Soi 22 BKK was knocked down, some of those places were open all night. Years ago, I occasionally I would wake up around 1am and go down there to get redrunk.????
  3. Cameroon was colonially part French and part British, I worked there for a while (It's sandwiched between ex French & British colonies, a bit like Thailand!????).
  4. The life-span of a shale well is much shorter than for a conventional gas well?
  5. In my 20-odd years in Thailand I went on a motorbike taxi a grand total of 2 times, too dangerous.
  6. Someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I think in the UK if you have a full car licence you're licenced to ride motorcycles up to 125cc.
  7. As has been mentioned on here before, I don't think travel insurance covers us for medical bills incurred from motorcycle accidents, even if we do have a licence. Would probably be the same for things like water-skiing or diving etc, unless specified on the policy.
  8. I know exactly what you're saying, but I've had many years to ponder what I'm saying. I don't "sit in my room complaining" I'm not really a complainer. I did used to go out for a walk every day, that's an hour or 2 (out of 16). Cookery courses, I don't like cooking, much Day trip tp Bangkok? When I lived there for about 20 years?!???? (Sighseeing? Already seen enough temples to last 5 lifetimes????). Girl watching? Been doing that in Thailand since 1985????? Martial arts when suffering from quite severe arthritis (since I was a kid). Volunteer at an orphanage, and have people putting it around that you're a pedophile????Although I have thought about doing volutary work generally,. I now live and work back in the UK.
  9. 16 hours of every day 24/7/365 is a helluva lot of time to find 'things to do'. Things worth watching on the TV are very hard to come by. It's very easy for a few drinks a few days a week to turn into going down the bar every day and getting sloshed, it can be like a 'slippery-slope'. That was my experience in Thailand. I now live and work back in the UK. I wasn't old enough or had enough money/pension to remain in Thailand indefinitely when I was 53 y o. That was just my experience of it.
  10. It's the same in the UK. The Republican/Conservative Party want lots of exploitable labour for their rich mates. Whilst the Democrat/Labour Party want lots more poor people who will vote for them. So, everyone's happy!????
  11. I believe that the starting pay for a Thai police officer is around 8,000-10,000 Baht a month, so we shouldn't be surprised when they look for "alternative" ways of getting money????
  12. It can be done for you, and you might just have to sign a piece of paper. You should always declare ANY previous convictions (however minor) (which I believe is the case for an ESTA to the USA). 35 years ago I was fined £200 in court for bringing too many ciggies back from Thailand, that's a very minor offence, but I always write it down when such information is requested.
  13. The Thais wouldn't want to do anything that might reduce tourism numbers, even by a little bit.
  14. I was once stopped by a cop at LHR when flying to Bangkok and asked where I was travelling to.
  15. Non life-threatening, how long's a piece of string?! In the UK it's also possible to go private and be in within a few weeks. The only problem being is that many people just can't afford to "go private", or pay for health insurance. (I believe a similar situation exists in the USA?).
  16. I don't think that a third party actual has access "into" the database. It's that a search is carried out on request to the DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service). I have requested and had to pay for one myself (job application). Also, a potential employer can do so (for which I think they need our signature/permission).
  17. Earlier this year my brother suffered his first heart attack, and within 2 weeks he had had the bypass operation. I think it depends a lot on the seriousness of the condition.
  18. "That is not possible so I don't know why you plucked that one from the sky as an option". I'm pretty sure that when us Brits (and any other nationality) applies for a visa (a visa-waiver) to the USA that a CRC (Criminal Record Check) is/or can be carried out. I believe that a drugs conviction can often lead to us being denied.
  19. Are BPH really that expensive? I had mates who used other private Thai hospitals and some of their bills were "eyewatering" (£30k+), but then again I come from a country where we're not used to using private healthcare. I believe that healthcare costs were a major factor in many retirees returning to their home countries.
  20. As I mentioned in an earlier post, Tony Martin went down for manslaughter in the UK for the exact same thing.
  21. So, you were renting the house from your daughter through Air-B&B? (Which is what I specifically mentioned).
  22. Part of why Air-B&B was a bit problematic in Thailand. I believe that anywhere that rents rooms out for less than 30 days must be registered as a hotel What you mention is part of the process of checking in a hotel.
