It really depends on your mother tongue. If it is English, then learning another Germanic language like German would be less challenging because there are many cognates and similar grammar. Like I said, many westerners failed in the tones category and the different Thai grammar. Many westerners use English grammar instead of Thai grammar when speaking Thai.

It's fish! When I heard it for the first time, I said 'what the hell is he trying to say?'. Most Thai people cannot pronounce the simple word 'fish' properly. Try asking your Thai friends to pronounce it by pointing at a fish. It's the same situation as when westerners mispronounce some Thai words, those who are used to hearing the mispronunciation will know what you are trying to say.

Learning Thai is just like learning two languages ie. Sanskrit and Tai. I learnt classroom Thai language for many months but then I found out that most Thai don't speak like that, they used a completely different vocabulary and grammar.

@NickyLouie Counting from 1 to 10 is not a problem for most expats. I think this is exaggeration. Even tourists who are here for a short while can learn Thai numbers quickly. It's speaking at an intermediate level without a heavy farang accent that is a challenge for most expats.
