Before moving here 16 years I spent 34 years coming here on holiday,  Sometimes  twice a year

In all that time I have never see a violent incident and it's not as though I didn't spend much of my time in places like Soi Nana and Walking Street.  Mind you years ago it wasn't called Walking Street..

I did see attempted violence once in Phuket a Thai lady was trying to brain a guy with a piece of 4x2 for going with another lady. She never caught him.

I'm not saying violence doesn't happen but compared to some other countries it is much safer.

  2. I need to send a 4k parcel to Bangkok. I am having great trouble in finding how much it will cost. Kerry's website only shows the list of provinces in Thai although main page is English. And trying to find info on Thai post is almost impossible because everything relates to international shipping.

The parcel is a sealed unit UPS and needs to go to their depot in Bangkok for battery replacement. If it's too much to send I'll just order a new one instead.

Anybody have any info that would help.

On a slightly different but related topic, anybody know how to dispose or a 4k UPS safely.

This law, introduced by Thaksin, is one of the most stupid ever enacted in Thailand. Utterly pointless, and a real turn-off for tourists/visitors/people generally. Thankfully ignored by many outlets, however this half-assed statement from today's government is almost as stupid as the original law.

    Wrong Prime Minister.

Yes and no...   All other things being equal, experience, education, standard of bike (brakes, tyres etc)... an older person has slower reflexes and less agility...    At some point the reflexes and agility diminish sufficiently to warrant giving up the bike full stop...  (many have done so, and I will have to at some point) - but that also depends if using the bike top pop down to the local 7-11 or to ride inter-provincial highways or in the city centre traffic.

That said - a careful 70 year old rider is far safer than a nutter without a helmet on a pocket-rocket on any road.

But, highlighting that older people have slower reactions and that places them at higher risk is not ageist - its just fact.

    --------

I’m in my 40’s I play regular football...  the difference when playing with those below 35 is astonishing.

For most people the speed and reactions go off a cliff - its clearly noticeable when playing against younger players.  This reduction in reaction and speed continues...

For motorcyclists - reactions and experience are clearly key. A fast reaction without the experience to react correctly is deadly, but reacting correctly but too slowly can also be deadly.

We each know our limits, but everyone knows we slow as we get older, its inevitable and nothing to get defensive about.

I agree completely. I'm 75 and thinking about a 3 wheeled electric scooter instead of riding my Honda Click.

  5. Howard Miller was the last British Honorary Consul for Pattaya after Barry Kenyon. I don't think that would have happened if there hadn't been a check on him first. I always found him polite and helpful.

  6. It would be common sense to think it was a foreigner, after all, Burma, Laos, Vietnam and China all drive on the right.

It's easily done. Many years ago after a driving holiday in Europe I came out of the hotel loaded the car up and started to drive home  on the wrong side of the road.

Nobody else in the car noticed. It was only when I saw a vehicle coming towards me that I realized.

Today (19/5) is the last episode of season 1 of Halo. Sci-Fi TV series based on the famous game.

Quite watchable. IMO, if you're into that genre. The only thing that spoils it for me a bit, is that the humanity in 26th century, while having FTL space ships, still use ICE vehicles running on rubber tires and AK-47 (what a resilient rifle surviving 500 years!), while the aliens have some real kickass gear. Otherwise, I think the story and FX are very good. Have downloaded the game, see how it compares to DOOM.

    Nothing compares to Doom.
