  1. You can use a Thai drivers licence in the UK, no need for an international. see

    here

    taken from dvla website -

    Photocard Driving Licence Holder

Apply by Phone – Fee £17.50

If none of your details have changed you can apply by phone if one or both parts of your photocard licence have been lost or stolen. You have to pay by credit or debit card. The telephone number is 0870 240 0009.

Ring from Monday to Friday 8.00 am - 8.30 pm or Saturday 8.00 am - 5.30 pm. You can’t apply by phone if you have a paper licence holder or if your photo is due to expire or has expired.

Apply by Post - Fee £17.50

Just complete the D1 Pack form. You can get this form from DVLA form ordering service or Post Office branches. Remember to include the part of your licence you have if only one part is missing. You can send the application and fee to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1AB.

If you changed your name since your last licence was issued you will need to provide original documents to confirm your new name if it’s changed. DVLA tries to get your licence within 3 weeks of receiving your application when you apply by post.

Dont forget that all uk photocard licences are only valid for 10 years, they require a new photo every ten years.

  2. No one makes persons applying use agents, if someone does not have the confidence to apply themselves, then where would they get the assistance they require, and yes than can read up on TV.

If looking at fees, are the fees for the new English test fair?, and for that matter are any fees payable to get your lawfully married spouse to your home county fair?.

Its an expensive process all round, you either choose to pay or not.

I am not connected in any way to any agent.

  3. If you go to ban Packard, after being stamped out of Thailand, there is a office where for want of a better word 'touts' are. I use a girl there, she will do everything for 1.300 baht, you do not leave your chair, she will return your passport, then reenter Thailand, I think 3 passports photo's are needed. I have used her on two occasion now and its very easy, she will also get any duty free you need. If you need a phone number, PM me.

Ban packard is the closest crossing to Chantaburi. and is very quiet

  4. Hi bigmac

I'm in the same boat as you sub-contact work in construction in the UK, have been here in Thailand all this year, hoping things will improve back in the UK, but hasn't so far, maybe things will improve next year. My wife already has a UK passport so we can go back anytime if work does pick up.

Regarding your son get both a UK and Thai passport, then its that much easier, enter UK on UK passport no visa required, and enter Thailand on Thai passport no visa required.

I will leave the settlement visa question for others.

Have you thought about working here yourself?

Good luck for the future and welcome to thaivisa

Lannatyne beat me to the punch, but i agree be flexible with looking for work in the uk.

  5. Cheapest although maybe not the easiest is a letter from your local Amphur detailing your address and if they have done any for farang before it should be straightforward. Before I got my Yellow Book I always went to my Amphur, they even had the letter already formatted ready to add my details.

I tried that at Sattahip Amphur, spoke to the head man, can not be done, in the end had it done at pattaya immigration.

  6. When were you thinking of visiting the UK?.

Could you not obtain a double entry tourist visa in Australia, or failing that in Laos, that would be good for 6 months stay here, with one border run and two visits to the local immigration.

If the UK trip then fitted you could obtain a multi entry non immigrant 'o' visa in Hull, to visit friends, which would cover you for just short of 15 months, with 90 day border runs, if not then you could repeat the double entry tourist visa in Laos, or a combination of ed visa and non immigrant 'o'.

  7. Anything over 30 days will require either a tourist or non immigrant 'o' visa, tourist visas are valid for 60 days are free at the moment, and can be extended at local immigration office for 30 days at a cost of 1,900 baht.

Non immigrant multi entry 'o' visa are not easy to obtain and will require leaving the country every 90 days.

  8. Thanks. I'll have a look. Another thing. When I look at the sizes of the big things on my C drive (all the folders directly under C) it adds up to MUCH LESS than the total space I am told I have. Perhaps that is normal for it to not up exactly? But way off?

Not trying to teach you to such eggs, but system restore will occupy some of the harddrive space, i just checked my 'c' drive and the properties box is showing 81.2gb of used space, but when i check all the files in the 'c' drive inc. hidden files/folders they only add up to 69.1gb, so that shows 12.1gb is missing , and on checking system restore it shows that it is allocated the 12.1gb

  9. Is this the one ' twist the throttle' some play, others say not available in your area

  11. UK Gov

There is no mention of any requirement for an IDP in the UK.

from uk gov web site for visitors to UK - Driving licences issued in any other country excluding eu and british isles inc, jersey isle of man etc.

    * you can drive any small vehicle eg cars and or motorcycles, shown on your driving licence, for a period of 12 months from the date that you last entered the country, as long as it remains full and valid

    * you can only drive larger vehicles eg lorries and buses, shown on your licence, that have been registered outside of GB which you have driven into the country
