  1. I don't think there is any embassy which will retain a passport while an application for the new one is being processed. The old one remains valid until the new one has actually been issued and been handed to the holder.

The OP should not have any problems.

For UK passport holders, Hong Kong cancel the old passport as soon as they receive the application, but the old passport is retained, when the new one is received the corners have to be cut off the old one.

  2. @Manicminer - I couldn't get a 1 year multiple entry visa either, although my employer and lwayers had asked for one, KL just gave me 90 days single, and so of course I have to renew. Her's one option, and a friend of mine (American) does this every year, he has a Thai fiancee but lives in Malaysia....and he gets a one year multiple everytime!

Get two UK passports (the embassy should issue you with that), then fly cheap cheap to Penang or Phnom Penh - wherever, with both your passports. The one with the exit stamp from Thailand you DHL or FedEx to a mate in the UK, you give them the form with necessary photos and money and they post internally to the Hull consulate. Meanwhile you fly into Thailand with your second passport. When first passport is ready in the UK get it DHLed to an address overseas, go and pick it up and then enter Thailand with your new 1 year visa attached. My friend has been doing this for 3 years - just an option.

The problem with this method is that you are in Thailand when the visa is issued, that is not allowed.

You could post from another country to a friend and then they apply, and then post to you. it would entail a stay of a week or more, and cost a fair bit in delivery charges.

  3. As Mario2008 said, obtain a re-entry permit,(1.000 baht)from immigration, which would allow you to re-entry with your original 'allowed to stay' stamp, which would have been 60 days from your first entry, then obtain a 30day extension (1.900 baht) again from immigration, when that stamp nears its end,do a border run to use your 2nd entry of the 2 entry tourist visa, and again a 30 days extension if required giving you a 6 month stay in Thailand.

    have a good trip

  4. You apply up to 30 days before the permission to stay ends, so 12 months after entry. By applying early you won't lose any days, as the extension starts from the day your current permission ends.

But an important question is if you have a single or a multiple O-A visa. With a multiple you can just leave the country before the VISA expires and return to Thailand to get another 1 year. Just look at the VISA, does it say multiple or M?

Are you sure about that? I have never heard of anyone getting another one year when re-entering Thailand. If this were so then none of us would have to do extensions every year, it would be easier to do a border run. Less hassle and no need to show proof of income or money in the bank.

The maximum allowed would be 2 years on a multi entry 'O-A' visa, and the last entry, to get a one year allowed to stay stamp, would have to be made at the latest one day before expiry of the visa. Do not confuse visas with permission to stay stamps.

  5. The other option would be, applying for a 60 day extension when your current stay is almost finished,as both litebeer and lopburi3 suggest, but instead of obtaining another extension of stay at the end of the 60days, obtain a multi entry non immigrant 'o' visa from Kuala Lumper. You would only need 100.000baht in your bank for that, but would have to do 90 day border runs though, but the visa would last 15 months nearly, by doing a border run the day before the visa expires.

    all the best

  6. easy solution since you are out of job, come here!

I agree, its coming up to winter in the UK, lock up the house, get someone to check on it and get over here for 6 months, get a multi entry non immigrant from hull, spend more time with the girlfriend, build up lots of photo's and stuff, that would be another 6 months of building up her bank balance and work record. Enjoy the winter over here. and if you are both in the same frame of mind, then re-apply next year.

Don't rush into another application, time will help.

    all the best

  7. sophon

Get a multi entry 'o' it will do for 6 months over christmas,2x 90day entries, you will then be able to use it up until its expiry date of one year, entry before the expiry date will give you an entry of 90 days, making the visa last for 15 months, just get the visa as close to your departure date as you can, as the 1 year starts the day it is issued. each entry is valid for 90 days, then a border run is required.
