Hopefully Koh Samui and Phuket will follow suit. These destinations are only in existence as they now stand due to the influx of much tourist money over the decades, and we can safely assume that most tourists are not Buddhists so why should they have to conform to Buddhist principles. Personally, I can live with the bars being closed on the Buddha days, but what is frustrating is not being able to purchase alcohol at any of the major supermarkets between 2pm and 5pm.

Do you not know that arresting overstayers is the top priority for the police in Thailand - which is obvious by the number of police that are in the photoshoots when one is taken into custody? In this case however, it appears that it was justified - more by luck than by investigative police work, but it will no doubt be hailed as the reason why all overstayers are hounded, taking up many hours of police time that could be better spent doing "proper" police work!

A big fuss being made about tourists/farangs peeing when they get taken short. The obvious answer would be more public toilets that are well placed and publicised in public areas in Phuket (as well as other tourist resorts in Thailand). But that is no excuse for peeing against someone's car - presumably well in the public eye. If you get taken short - find a back street or even the sea - after all fishes pee and s**t in it! And from what I've heard, there is plenty of raw sewage being dumped there anyway! As an aside, which has already been mentioned already - how many times do you see Thais taking a leak at the side of the road without a care in the world , but you never see that plastered all over the pages of the media? Maybe tourists/farangs think that that is one of the local customs that they are following suit! 🙂
