  1. Oddly, cloud seeding is not done under the auspices of the Thai Air Force. Royal Rainmaking operations was eventually consolidated under the Agricultural Aviation Division and Department of Royal Rainmaking founded in January 2013. Albeit, other government agencies might be called upon for support. https://www.royalrain.go.th/royalrain/Editor_Page.aspx?Menuld=105
  2. Fly 1st class and you get a Cobra.
  3. Add income inequality and the government is on the right path.
  4. "new benchmarks" Like what? Anything specific as to any detailed agenda or expectations seems missing.
  5. And what does the US get in return for such import increases? Foreign trade lies within the oversight of the US government, ie., the US Trade Representative. While the Thai delegation may reach some MOU with various US rice importers to increase rice imports, the US government has oversight responsibility to assure trade consistency with its President's economic policies. The US will likely want a quid pro quo, ie., what additional imports/services from the US will be required? Especially in an election year! Thailand's rice trade delegation cannot make such decisions.
  6. The 2% increase may be deceptively low. In recent years (PM Prayut tenure?) the military has used small down-payments and long term installment plans for foreign military arms acquisitions. Paradoxically, the 2023 draft budget bill proposed a 2% cut compared with the 2022 defense budget. March 24, 2022 https://www.janes.com While the pandemic may have forced an overall budget reduction, the Ministry of Defence's research and development agency the Defense Technology Institute 2023 budget was increased by 21%. DTI projects include acquisition of military hardware. (Paraphrasing) Acquisition of foreign military hardware by the thai military appears typically done with upfront down-payments and long term installment payments; the latter becomes obligated by subsequent annual budget requests and not reviewable. The aforementioned 2% cut for 2024 seems dubious at best. The 2024 military budget increase appears in practice to be much higher when considering obligated budget carryovers.
  7. "Has the Pheu Thai-led government put military reform on the back burner?" The answer was apparent almost immediately after "election" of Thavisin in September 2023. Yes. "Opinion: Thailand's new government falling short on military reform," https://www.thaienquirer.com "However, the turn of events post-election suggests that the winds of change may just be empty rhetoric - a devastating betrayal for a nation that has long sought substantial reform in its military apparatus." "As it stands, Srettha and his government need to decide whether they will be agents of meaningful change or just another disappointing chapter in Thailand's complex relationship with democracy and military power,"
  8. Check the 10-year renewable Long Term Resident visa, specifically the Work-from-Thailand Professionals. Tax exemption from overseas (outside of Thailand), 1-year (vs 90-day) report to immigration, multiple re-entry permit, fast-track service at Thailand international airports. Dedicated IO window for LTR visa. 50,000 baht. https://ltr.boi.go.th/documents/LTRbrochure-EN.pdf See also (nice table presentation, not a recommendation) https://KPMG.com/th/en/home/insights/2022/11/legal-news-flash-issue-19.html My experience Pensioner category - takes 2-3 weeks depending on time to gather required documentation and review by BOI. Telephone and e-mail contact with proficient English-speaking visa sponsor BOI available. I used BOI at the One Start One Stop Investment Center at Chamchuri Building near MRT Sam Yan station - same floor as IO.
  9. Consider that signs are not posted because there's no reason to do so? Buddhism is about tolerance.
  10. Do you know about Sunbathing Buddha Festivals? Also known as "the basking of Buddha." Further the two ladies were appropriately dressed, neither nude nor semi-nude, what one might expect of a tourist on a hot, sunny day. But to be fair, let be it the monks or abbot to complain of people enjoying the peacefulness of a Buddhist temple area in the open.
  11. Why do private pawnshops even exist in Thailand considering there are government-run pawnshops? Last year those government pawnshops were ordered to waive interest on repayment of loans up to 5,000 baht, according to Social Development and Human Security Minister Silpa-archa. Dec. 3, 2023 nationthailand.com Ban "informal lenders" as illegal operations subject to arrest and confiscation of all assets. Move debt accounts to government-run pawnshops.
  12. Considering Thailand's lethargic reaction to the almost 2 million Ukrainian hostages held by Russia as a result of its 2014 invasion of the Crimea Peninsula, I'd imagine Thailand's reaction would be, "How will the current Gaza conflict affect tourism in Thailand."
  13. Considering the Thai government provides financial support vis a vis Thai tax collection to Buddhist clergy, temple abbots and monks, for temple construction, maintenance, renovation, funding for religious education, etc., why make any donation? Also consider potential temple corruption: Thai government provides 4.67 billion baht ($137 million) in 2014 study to support Buddhist temples and monks, "Thai junta seeks to force to open their finances," June 2017, reuters.com "Temple corruption erodes public faith", April 28, 2021 TSRI Insight "2017-2020 Thai temple fraud investigations," Wikipedia "Thai Senior Monk Gets 26 years for Money Laundering," April 2019, Benard News
  14. Use Lazada Wallet and refunds are made within 24 hrs if not much sooner if you use a Thai bank app to top off Wallet. Also better than paying COD that requires you to personally receive delivery.
  15. Bangkok needs decentralization to slow growth that can better serve the economic development of surrounding regions. Imagine instead a Bangkok-like development in the Southern and Northern Provinces. But that might dilute Bangkok metro's regional political strength.
  16. February 19, 2024 is National Democracy Day. Probably a repeat performance by the military.
  17. Yes, especially since June 2022 the TM6 arrival/departure card was shelved at international airports in Thailand. https://www.thailandelitevisas.com/ Then later suspensions such as Nov. 1, 2023-April 30, 2024 at Sadao Immigration checkpoint.
  18. What happened to the government's plans for Very Small Power Plants created in 2020 to get operated by farming communities that uses harvested agricultural biomass as fuel versus just field burning the biomass? If successful, the then government alleged that it could save money by reducing sime agricultural subsidies and produce improve farmer revenues. Now we're back to "exploring."
  19. Leaving the race, Christie may hurt Trump. New Hampshire holds a "semi-open" primary that allows unregistered voters (aka Independent voters) in addition to registered Republicans to vote in the Republican primary. According to current registrations, Republicans represent about 30% and independent voters about 40%. The unregistered voters have the potential to put Halley in first place.
  20. June 2023 with a Thai flagship store in Bangkok. December 2022 Models Y and 3 available online.
  21. "attractive nuisance" is a legal term that applies largely to children.
  22. Thailand already paid $193.7 million (7 billion baht) installment on one Chinese sub purchase. Probably why Thailand Navy considered taking a frigate instead so the installment payment made during PM Prayut's regime to China could be shifted towards a substitute purchase. Regardless, without any submarine the Thai Navy (and Thai taxpayers) is stuck with a 540 million baht newly-built submarine facility, training center, submarine simulator centered on the Chinese sub purchase, and a squadron of submariners trained in Germany and South Korea (?). Time to shift priorities Mr. Defense Minister Suthin Khlangsang and find a solution that fits the Thai taxpayer's pocket book.
  23. What happened to the infamous man-catcher (Sasumata) that police allegedly trained with?
  24. For children, a dangerous attractive nuisance. The globe needs to be isolated so as not to be touched if it is to remain in sunshine, otherwise move into a shady area or construct a sunblock over it.
