As I interpreted the OP, the fund is run by the government. Since the government prints the money, they can certainly guarantee a 3% return. But yeah, it sounds like a government run Ponzi scheme.

Nothing but good to say about the Schwab no-fee checking account. I have had no problems "accessing accounts" while in Thailand. As another poster mentioned, the account has many benefits that can add up to substantial savings if you use them.

Thieves have numerous possible ways to get your card number. Data breach at one of the places you used the card, skimming devices, hacking the credit card processor, scraping the number from you by intercepting the RFID signal at close range, formjacking, stealing it if you used it over public or other non-secured WIFI, one of the employees where you used it stole the information, among others. Presumably you didn't fall for one of the obvious ways: phishing email, inadvertently downloading malware, scam phone call, or the ever popular "your wife/girlfriend did it." In short, it happens all the time and you'll probably never know how.

AFAIK, VAT has always been charged on imported goods exceeding 1500 THB. Starting on 19 July and continuing through 31 December 2024, the government is also collecting VAT on imported goods with a value of 1-1500 THB. The "official" explanation is to combat competition from cheap imported Chinese goods. (Side note: I'd rather the company collect the VAT on my behalf than make a trip to the Post Office or DHL or wherever.)

Yeah, that's the thing about this - and perhaps it's already been mentioned but I'm not reading 10 pages of whining posters - but one doesn't have to change. If you like what you have, keep it. Nothing says you have to change anything. 1900 THB per year for an extension is a bargain. I'll be keeping that.

I'll play along, if only for the benefit of those who can't quite understand that in this hypothetical situation one either pays taxes or pays ATM fees of 12K THB. (Obviously, there are no fee credit cards and ATM fee rebate cards but they aren't in the scenario as described.) Given those two choices - and only those two choices - I'd pay the tax. It limits your total outlay to 12K THB. If you take the ATM fee choice, you pay the same 12K THB but leave yourself open to the tax man to audit you at a later date, potentially resulting in a tax payment and possible fines/interest on top of the 12K ATM fees.
