  1. Yeah, that's not what it says about DTAs at all. In fact, it stresses that Thailand has 61 DTAs in place to prevent double taxation though the author opines that claiming a foreign tax credit may be inconsistent or cumbersome. Says nothing about the "average pensioner" being at risk because they won't be "rescued" by DTAs. It does say that for people who are citizens of countries without a DTA, double taxation may be a concern. The piece concludes with a recommendation that Thailand actually expands its network of DTAs.
  2. Your putative co-stars are about your age so don't give up yet.
  3. Anonymous "connected" guy says we're all doomed. The "Deep State" is the culprit. Where I have heard this before.....?
  4. This. Radost has a large dispaly in front with the first week's schedule, the overall tournament bracket, miniature flags of each nation involved, and a notice that they will be showing all games.
  5. Yes, that's the great thing about trying to arrive at a conclusion to a problem that does not exist. No matter the conclusion, it's bound to be accurate since it cannot be refuted under a non-existent rule set.
  6. False equivalence. If one wants to use a "wearing a helmet" analogy, the appropriate analogy is "will the Thai authorities enforce the fact that one is not wearing a helmet." Similarly, if one does not apply for a TIN, will the Thai authorities. enforce any hypothetical penalties for not applying for a TIN. Always surprises me that when people post foolish statements on public forums they think they shouldn't be treated as a fool.
  7. Let's keep the story time rolling..... And when they can't pay all of these hypothetical back taxes, interest, fines, and penalties (what, pray tell, is the difference between a fine and a penalty?), they "probably" will go to Thai prison. While in hypothetical Thai prison, they will "probably" be forced to have unprotected sex with other men. So they'll "probably" catch HIV and then "probably" develop AIDS. Go sign up for a Thai TIN immediately or you'll "probably" die of AIDS. (Wow! Thanks for the heads up. Probably.)
  8. Yes. Here's your insight: nothing's changed. This entire thread is about a proposal. Nothing more, nothing less.
  9. Feel good stories like this warm the cockles of my cockles.
  10. There's nothing to update in the tax guide because nothing has changed. Everyone on this thread is getting all worked up over an off-hand comment that is not anywhere close to becoming a rule, a regulation, an accepted practice, or a law. (IIRC, Mike Lister is taking a two week holiday.)
  11. Having read through the thread, one concludes that Bangkok Bank, Ltd. is not, in fact, anti-American.
  12. To be classified as a Thai tax resident, one must spend 180 days or more in Thailand. If you don't, then no worries. Pretty clearly evident if one bothers to read the thread.
  13. Like several others on this thread, you're confusing two different proposals. One is to tax multi-national corporations a minimum tax - that's where the one billion THB comes into play. Two is to tax individuals on world-wide income - there is not one billion THB requirement for that to take effect.
  14. Just to remind you that you are confusing two different initiatives. One is to tax multinational corporations - those are the "platforms" being mentiioned. The other is to tax worldwide income from individuals who are tax residents. They do not need to earn over a billion baht to qualify, as you seem to think.
  15. I was going to say "corporate tax" but the corporate tax rate in Thailand is 20%. So perhaps that poster is referring to the capital gains tax, which is 15%.
  16. Reviving an old inquiry - a google search of this establishment shows "temporarily closed" for some time now. That's often code for "out of business" in Thailand. Anyone know if this pub is no longer operating?
  17. This perspective may take a bit of the "shine" off of Sheinbaum's landslide victory: "Mexico has its first woman president. But her big win may be a bigger danger to democracy and security." https://www.theatlantic.com/international/archive/2024/06/failing-state-mexico-sheinbaum/678585/
  18. Last time I was there (end of April), Father Ted's had Leffe Brune on tap.
  19. "Thailand’s prolonged political crisis and poor management of the economy over the past few decades have taken a huge toll on the country’s growth. The Thai economy grew just 1.5 per cent in the first quarter of this year after having expanded 1.7 per cent in the fourth quarter of last year and 1.9 per cent for the full year in 2023, according to state-owned think-tank National Economic and Social Development Council. The country has been bogged down by sluggish growth for decades since the 1997 financial crisis." https://www.thaipbsworld.com/has-thailand-become-the-sick-man-of-asean/
  20. Same here. Was never a delay problem until WISE partnered with PLAID. What previously took a day now takes a week due to my account having been verified via micro-transactions. WISE recently informed me that I could speed up my transfers by going into the settings of my account and obtaining "instant verification" for my credit union account. It appears that this is a process whereby WISE/PLAID will re-direct you to the log-in page of your bank/credit union and record your log-in for verification purposes. I have no intention of sharing my bank/credit union's log-in credentials with another entity so that's a non-starter for me.
  21. The "pull" option is what I use - I initiate the transfer from the WISE app, not from my credit union. Was never a delay problem until WISE partnered with PLAID. 22. "People who use cannabis"? "Cannabis users"?
