  1. Jeez, I don't see a problem if you are there watching the staff check the new phone. My GF bought a new Samsung last year. The store not only checked it, but updated it and transferred everything from the old phone too. She was able to walk out of the store with no worries about setting up the new phone. Great service!
  2. Before the pandemic, I used to buy Thai Airways fully flex economy class from LHR/BKK/LHR. Unlimited free changes and 100% mileage. I would buy the ticket as soon as it went on sale for my expected travel dates, knowing I could change for free as I wished. That ticket used to cost about £850. The same ticket since the pandemic is normally over £1,600. I still fly Thai but on a slightly more restrictive ticket at a lower cost. The loss of British Airways capacity, and competition, on same route almost certainly led partly to the increase, as Thai knew they could charge more. Add to that, the restructuing of Thai from bankruptcy, and changes to the airline, then NO, it is not a ripoff but just market pricing.
  3. Agreed. Even in private or with someone you love or trust! No good can come of it. Thais (and others) simply see cash as something to grab and spend as fast as possible. If you have cash, then clearly you don't need it (or it would have been spent already). That's the mindset of many Thais. A lesson learned.
  4. My experience too. Never been asked by Thai Immigration to see an onward ticket. I have been asked muliple times by the airline flying to Thailand to see my return/onward ticket when I have been on a one-way ticket.
  5. British Airways has a lot of older planes (especially at Gatwick). The B777-200 (G-YMMA) they used on this flight - BA2231 LGW-BKK on 28th Oct - is 25 years old. I really hope the cabin is in better condition than you experienced. I prefer Thai's B777-300ERs (HS-TTA, HS-TTB & HS-TTC) to/from LHR that were delivered new just 2-3 years ago.
  6. Like many have said, the Thai Tax office and Immigration are unlikely to be connected if ever. Most say "wait and see". For now they don't have a clue. Until it is clear and detailed, then do nothing. How will they, "who", know? and know what? I bring very little into Thailand each year and have 800k in Thai bank account since 2018. I do spend less than 180 days per year in Thailand but, at some point, I expect that immigration will want a TIN to get the annual Non-O extension. I'll wait until required.
  7. But if you you don't have salary but instead fiat in hand, then it will be half. If you have gold in hand, it will retain its value and get you the same product in return (rather than half). This is the beauty of gold and reason why its price increases. i.e it retains its value in real exchange for products and value.
  8. Wish I bought earlier. Still buying in March 2023 and holding to date is a good feeling. I didn't buy for profit but for security. When I die, my GF gets the bullion. She will be happy.
  9. What I want to know is how it kept flying with minus 15 minutes of fuel...
  10. As much as I love my GF, and have no intention of leaving, as things are so good, it is for this reason that I will not get married to her. Once married, a lady can change her ways and attitude, knowing that her husband is trapped. This was me until I finally had enough and divorce was by far the better option once my son was in boarding school. Leaving the ex wife was one of the best things I ever did. Now, life is great with my GF of 4 years. Very happy. Of course she wants to seal the deal by getting married, but she knew from the outset that I will not marry again. No upside in marriage for men!
  11. Not Chiang Mai, but in case anyone in Bangkok needs a cleaning service, I can highly recommend www.do4you.net For my 2 bed, 2 bath 78sqm condo with 1 balcony, they send 1 or 2 staff for a total of 5 hours. They bring all their own gear and leave the place sparkling. I usually get them in once a month. Cost is 1,300 Baht. Used to be able to book online, but now have to download their app to book. I nomally pay cash but I think it is possible to do bank transfer. Office staff speak good English but the cleaners are mostly young Burmese girls. Very friendly and helpful. Always spot on time and call when in the lobby.
  12. These stories are so sad on many levels. The dead infant, the mother, the father and society. This does not only happen in Thailand but likely, all countries, even the west such as; the UK, European countries, USA, Canada and Australia etc. What has not been reported here are the full circumstsances. Was the baby that of the husband, or another liaison, either consensual or otherwise? Being a foreigner in Thailand, she likely would not have access to affordable healthcare. Maybe there are many other factors involved. It is, a tragedy for sure. What crime against others have been committed? We don't know. For sure, this will likely leave a lasting effect on the mother (and possibly her husband).
  13. Clearly not in this case. Maybe they need to install propeller guards to avoid incidents like this which could easily have been so much worse. There should be clear, and enforced, division between diving and boating areas. Reminds me of the death of Kirsty MacColl. From Wikipedia... Death In 2000, after she participated in the presentation of a radio programme for the BBC in Cuba,[19] MacColl took a holiday in Cozumel, Mexico, with her sons and her boyfriend, musician James Knight. On 18 December 2000, she and her sons went diving at the Chankanaab reef, part of the National Marine Park of Cozumel, in a designated diving area that watercraft were restricted from entering. With the group was a local veteran divemaster, Iván Díaz. As the group was surfacing from a dive, a powerboat moving at high speed entered the restricted area. MacColl saw the boat coming before her sons did. Louis, age 13 at the time, was not in its path, but Jamie, age 15, was. She was able to push him out of the way (he sustained minor head and rib injuries), but she was struck by the powerboat, which ran over her. MacColl suffered severe chest and head injuries and died instantly.[20] MacColl's body was repatriated to the United Kingdom and was cremated after a funeral service at Mortlake Crematorium in Kew.
  14. You need help finding a bar in Bangkok? Try Sukhumvit Soi 11, Soi 11/1, Soi 7/1, Soi 4 and Soi 8. Plenty of choice. I had some good visits to the Soi 7 bars from 2021 but the noise was extreme as bars' loud music all blaring against each other.
  15. You're a UK citizen. Why would you need a transit visa to enter Thailand? Simply enter visa free. Your wife would enter as a Thai would.
  16. Yes. Most hotels know their seasonal demand and increase prices accordingly. Back in April, I was looking to book my favoured 3 star hotel in Pattaya for 28th December to 5th January. I know the manager and asked to book. Already fully booked. Looked on Agoda for nearby, similar hotels and the prices already more than doubled. I understand the surge and accept it. Many businesses use "dynamic" pricing based on demand. If they didn't, they wouldn't survive.
  17. She had a severe respiratory reaction after the 7th covid jab. Same time they gave her the flu jab. One in each arm. She's not likely to take 9th jab but medics here are determined to inject as often as they can. Maybe pressure from government or big pharmacy.
  18. I've had 3 Covid shots (regret getting the 3rd as unnescessary for travel and was Mrna). My mother, now age 86 years, in the UK, has had 8 Covid shots and contemplating getting the 9th shot as they are pushing it on her. OMG! I'm surprised that @TallGuyJohninBKK hasn't commented yet. He loves everything Covid.
  19. Whilst I've not had first hand experience with that, from reading this forum for years, it is quite likely that you will be sent to the place where you are guaranteed entry (i.e. your home country). Maybe another here can clarify?
  20. Answer to that would be because you travel so often that your passports get filled up too fast with whole page visas.
  21. If you were denied entry to Thailand, the only country that you are guaranteed entry to is your home country. Finland in this case. If Thai Immigration denied you and then allowed you to go onward to any other country, should you be denied there too, you would be returned to where you came from (Thailand in that case). Far easier and safer for the Thais to send you to your home country.
  22. @john donson As others have said, sell now. Even at a loss. Zero to be gained from trying any legal action. It will just make you worse off. Out of curiosity, what did you pay for the place? Couldn't have been much if so close to an airport.
  23. I last flew Thai from BKK to LHR in biz class in april this year. The onboard food and beverage service was excellent and dramatically better than any time since pandemic. Totally delicous and couldn't fault it in all aspects. At BKK, I always walk right past the Thai Airways lounge and head straight to Singapore Airlines Krisflyer lounge. IMO - a much nicer lounge, better food, beverages and lovely and engaging staff. I think that anyone with a Thai Airways biz class ticket can use any Star Alliance lounge (I'm *G so please correct me if I'm wrong about lounge access).
  24. I understand that but it makes no sense. It's nuts if all is done online, that one must return to their country of residence in order to apply for a visa online.
  25. That seems to be the norm these days with Thai ladies after they had two kids. My GF is worried if she gets "done" that she'll either go off sex or become a nympho. I'm not that keen on the "snip". For now she takes the "pill". Thoughts?
