we have this in Canada too in some places, I believe it was a response to cheap ass diners not tipping waiters who depend on gratuity to make a minimum wage job worth their while..

In San Francisco they passed a law that restaurants must add a 25% service charge to the bill.  That money only goes to the front house people.  The reason it was passed into law is that most people receiving tips under report them for income tax purposes.  Of course 25% is over the top but a very liberal controlled city.

  2. I was just reading this Pacific Cross article.  https://www.pacificcrosshealth.com/en/o-a-visa/

One section states:  "If the move proves successful, it is anticipated that the requirement will become mandatory for other types of Thai visa including Tourist Visas, Marriage Visas and other forms of long-term visa."

I would think Pacific Cross believes this based on conversations they have had with government officials even though it is not mentioned.

  3. First thing to consider is your home banks policies.  They can charge a fee for a foriegn withdrawal and also a foriegn transaction fee(a percentage of the exchange rate)  Then the Thai banks charge a 220 baht fee no matter the amount of withdrawal.  TMB, Krungsri and some SCB ATM's allow up to 30,000 baht withdrawals, as long as your home bank also allows that much.  Charles Schwab has no fees or foreign transaction fee and also rebates most charges foreign banks charge giving you free withdrawals.  You may find some banks that also refund other banks fees but most put a limit on how much they will rebate per month.

Then never accept the exchange rate the ATM offers you.  It is much lower than the rate visa/mastercard give you, which is very close to the rate you see when looking them up.  Always choose the 'continue with no conversion option.

  4. Civic Horizon right across from ekkamai bts station.  Pool on the 12th floor is fairly small but hardly saw anyone in it.  The hotel seemed to be used mostly by Japanese.  It is like a serviced apartment.  Rooms have a small kitchenette with a sink, microwave, larger than normal refrigerator and washer/dryer.  Also ironing board in the room.
