Correct. Never carry your original passport, keep it in your room/hotel locked away preferably in a safe. If you lose your passport it is a very big pain in the neck to get a new one, plus the expense. Only carry your passport when going to or from the airport or immigration!

Corruption is endemic in Thailand. None more so than the RTP, but it goes all the way up to the very top. Now its not just Thailand, most SEAsian countries are similar, probably except Singapore?
