I had said before, I do not prefer to live in paradise, because paradise becomes the daily normal, and what then? Better to have places you enjoy visiting, not making them your normal place day by day. Koh Phangan is not in my opinion any paradise anymore, been spoiled by now, but still worth visiting for the reasons listed below. But if I did not have too many resources and had the ability to travel as much as I do, I would have Chosen Koh Phangan. There I have everything I like about Thailand for now. Cleaner air (or cleaner than most other places, The sea, beaches, hiking possibilities, great gyms, restaurants, off road riding with my motorbike, diving, freediving, kayaking, sup paddling, and hospital. Koh Samui and international airport a short ferry ride away. I also like the atmosphere there, and I found more relaxed people visiting and also living there. If you have something to wake up to, and also need to do something useful and being diciplined helps alot wherever you are. Living on an Island back in the days, it was climbing, kayaking, diving, freediving and being social with equally minded people. We did activities together and had dinner together in the evening. At most we where more than 20 people showing up to the same restaurants. Of course before internet hit the Islands and ruined everything. Reading books and exchange books was the entertainment if not a movie night (pirate movie dvd) down at the beach on a white bedsheet and horrible speakers ,with the sound of waves in the background. People who had stayed for years, and people who came and went, and came back. That was the good old beach/Island days. And of course the bars with live music every Saturday, or any day someone felt for doing so. Today, I would choose an Island with a decent hospital and possibilities to be airlifted to Bangkok or a larger city.

Since I'm not one of those, I can agree from my point of view. I'm also one of those who feel more connected to my wife the longer we are together, but fornus it have always been babysteps establishing our relationship, finding our way to coexist. Not crazy love or lost our heads, neither promised each other gold and air castles and pink dreams. That's maybe the difference from others who have no time to be lost, and invest all they have, both feelings and invest in house and car after short time knownledge. You know something is wrong, when the girls starts talking about land and house investments 3 months in to the relationship, or want to emigrate to Europe. I had a few of those before I met my wife.

I see your point, and understand, but that says more about the men, than the women. Men who take advantage of poor women because they can, and ending up as Thai women haters at worst, or just grumpy old men who lost. I understand I come out arrogant, but it is in context replying to men who bash those of us who thrive and enjoy being two, and feel we have a good relationship far from what others think they know. It is possible to have good relationships with women, but I also understand not everyone is willing to walk the extra mile to make it happen. Doesn't mean it is a one way contribution, it only works if both do those small extra things for each other and make sure both get the best out of it. It takes adjustments from both parts. An retired expat with an younger girl, I can just assume how boring it can be if have no common ground, or nothing to do, that makes them get up in the morning and start doing something, and do not have daily routines, and as well weekends, same as you would do home when still working. As every place in Thailand, do not get stuck. Islands is better to visit, than living, but if I had to choose one place to live only in Thailand, it would had been an Island.
