Le Pen’s Ban Fuels Hard-Right Narrative of Persecution
Purdey replied to Social Media's topic in World News
Different judge and jurisdiction lead to a variation of ruling. No point in spreading whataboutism. If you can't do the time, don't do the crime. -
I remember reading that author F. Scott Fitzgerald and his wife were the first trendsetting Americans to go sunbathing in the South of France. Up until then, white skinned westerners were the norm for the reason that only the poor got tanned working in the sun. Then it became trendy, because you had to be rich to holiday on the Riviera. As people moved indoors to work in factories, they became whiter, while the rich went abroad and got a tan. As for the helmetless on bikes, a guess would be that some people never think "it will happen to them". Also, it you are poor and cannot afford a car, the motorbike is the poor man's pickup truck, and buying five helmets just adds to the expense.

Starmer Defends Human Rights Lawyers Amid Deportation Controversy
Purdey replied to Social Media's topic in World News
I find it hard to imagine any leader thinking that more illegal immigrants is good for the country. What have illegal immigrants ever done for us, for god's sake? Yes, I suppose we do need people to clean toilets and sweep roads. And pick fruit. And perhaps work on fishing boats. And collect trash cans. OK, perhaps some can wait tables. I'll give you that. Yes, yes, factory workers maybe. Could be sorting agricultural products, at a stretch sewing machine operators, dressmakers and tailors, maybe. Yeah, maids and housecleaners ok, I'll give you that. Sewage workers, probably. No, you don't need to remind me they work in construction laborers and as painters or bricklayers. But apart from cleaning toilets, sweeping roads, picking fruit, fishing, waste collection, sewing machine operators, dressmakers, tailors and agricultural labor, maids, housecleaners, sewage workers, construction labor, housepainters and bricklayers, what have illegal immigrants ever done for us? -

China Clean Energy Slowdown? Its not just America & Europe
Purdey replied to Social Media's topic in World News
While solar has a short payback of less than 8 years, and dropping, the energy becomes as free as sunshine indefinitely after that though maintenance and life of panels affects the cost. Technological advances will improve payback even more over the years. But compared to the continuous expense of mining coal, logistic costs and so on, surely it is more advantageous in the long run? Not an expert but it seems to make sense. -

At least we can work from home while we wait for a civil engineer to give the all clear. Hope it isn't the same civil engineer who said our building is earthquake proof. -

Destroying human rights is a long and slippery road to hell. Certainly exit illegal immigrants but do it within the law. -
While not published in western news media, an interview with Putin yesterday in Pravda was worth reading. He was quoted as saying that it was time for Russia to take back Alaska, a country it had sold to the USA in the 19th century for "a ridiculously low price." "The price we got was not serious. It was a joke. Today it remains underdeveloped, which we could change. It does not even touch the continental United States! Russia is closer to Alaska than any part of continental USA. Russia was the first to send a satellite into space. With our advanced technology we could develop Alaska. Canada is a possible security barrier and will ensure safety for Americans. All we want is some space to breathe."

Why have egg prices come down? The US has been panic buying eggs from Austria, Norway, Spain and Denmark. The U.S. Department of Agriculture said it secured new egg commitments from Turkey and South Korea. America needs to spend more of it's budget on eggs than expected.

Thailand Considers Shortening Visa-Free Stays for Chinese Tourists
Purdey replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
Talk about bad timing. First the government is criticized by the West for sending Uyghyrs to China, supposedly at the whim of Xi. Then pointing at Chinese tourists and cutting the visa limit for its citizens. The timing makes the two events look linked.
