  1. We have to acknowledge the elephant in the room (not Trump). His policy of peace may work. Telling Europe to increase defense spending will mean increased spending on SAAB, BAE and others instead of on American equipment. Those US armaments guys will lose more of the world's markets and peace will follow.
  2. Do the high costs of business in America make their products more expensive? I would not buy Uncle Ben's long grain rice here.
  3. The next time anyone rants about drug smugglers remember it's the addicts like Hunter who create the market.
  4. Lots of opinions from non PhDs, but quite a bit of science in the mix.
  5. You could at least link to those studies. Not all of us are doctors!
  6. Things picking up in forming a defiant front against the Russian Mafia with Sweden and Finland now in NATO, Saab has already negotiated framework agreements with the Nato Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA). Private companies will benefit from pledges by Nato member states to increase defence spending. All this because NATO can no longer trust America. Thank you, Mr. President.
  7. China hasn't fought a war in a long time, so how prepared it is for a physical war with the US is hard to calculate. An economic war is easier - sell China's investments in treasury notes and watch the run. BTW aren't drug takers at all to blame for fentanyl and other abused drugs.
  8. The US is useful to Europe as the biggest armaments maker in the world. It has only seen peace for 20 years since Independence.
  9. No foreigners singled out I see.
  10. Maybe, but. General Westmoreland wanted nuclear weapons sent to South Vietnam in the event of a defeat at the war's bloodiest battle, though President Johnson axed the operation. Gen. MacArthur asked the Joint Chief of Staffs for nuclear weapons during the Korean War. Sometimes things don't happen.
  11. Net zero implies replacing one type of technology with another and a new way of living. This has happened throughout history. Horse drawn carriages were pollution-free but were replaced with motor vehicles. What happened to the footmen? Got new jobs. Knocker uppers were replaced by alarm clocks. If eventually greenhouse gasses will be reduced, fine. Goodbye coal miners, hello rare earth miners. There are always those who want to retain the status quo. Even Luddites who wanted to destroy the modern industrial revolution. Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose
  12. Zelensky is no different from Churchill ("We will fight them on the beaches, etc.") People who give up, lose.
  13. Parents of SWMBO (She Who Must be Obeyed) are in late 80s and receive a stipend from me every month. Not a huge amount but enough for food. I have always mentored my Thai staff, and I hope made them better people. I listen to complaints and offer advice. A box of tissues in always on the desk. Many people don't care about their staff and think that we are only at the office to work.
  14. Didn't the police do anything upon being informed? More people have to call in outsiders these days to embarrass the police to take action.
  15. Perhaps the DSI could investigate the EC while they're at it.
  16. It is a good idea to teach rice farmers about alternative crops. They don't make much profit from rice; it is the Chinese Thai rice millers. When the price of rice drops, the millers' profit goes up. I met a young guy with a mango orchard many years ago and asked how much he could make in a year. He said about one million Baht.
  17. It seems that most people are in favor of drinking all day every day. I can understand Buddhists hoping other Buddhists don't drink on Buddhist holidays but that seems like a lost cause after several centuries. Maybe having a midday break from alcohol sales is weird but just allow supermarket sales to start from 12pm as well as hotels. Who needs a whisky at 9am?
  18. Not sure how you measure development, but things like the level of industrialization, income per capita, gross domestic product per capita, life expectancy, the rate of literacy and so on. By these measures, Thailand is far from being a developed country. One major problem for me is that I don't trust the government to tell the truth. I remember the case 20 odd years ago when the government announced a literacy rate of 95%, but friends at the Ministry of Education told me it was actually 65%. The government was too embarrassed to reveal the real number. Losing face makes them try to look good.
  19. He should not represent Thailand at the meeting. The Indonesians can come to Thailand.
  20. There are still people in the world who follow procedure and respect for office, like the King. Fat babies just scream, threaten and shout.
  21. It seems that America was happy to continue the wars in Vietnam and Afghanistan only to eventually lose. Now they think having a proxy defend the West against their biggest antagonist is a no go. I guess you can only lose so much.
  22. This is a big reason for not using banking apps. Risky.

  24. London is so cold, that first breath is like walking into a freezer. Hot good. Cold bad.
