Half of US soldiers to potentially pull out of Europe.
Purdey replied to bannork's topic in Political Soapbox
You are correct. The basis for the line was Governor Palin's 11 September 2008 appearance on ABC News, her first major interview after being tapped as the vice-presidential nominee. During that appearance, interviewer Charles Gibson asked her what insight she had gained from living so close to Russia, and she responded: "They're our next-door neighbors, and you can actually see Russia from land here in Alaska, from an island in Alaska". SNL took it and ran with the ball. -
Half of US soldiers to potentially pull out of Europe.
Purdey replied to bannork's topic in Political Soapbox
If Russia were to invade Alaska across that 52 mile gap, there's not much the EU could do anyway. Best not to get involved. -
The first time in history that kids have access to their friends wherever they are, and people want to cut off their two way communication. As someone mentioned, it used to be television that was the bête noir of parents. I hate seeing SWMBO (She Who Must be Obeyed) on the iPad all day. However, she can call and text her family upcountry every day and her friend in Italy because of WiFi. I guess everything has good and bad.

The results of the poll make it very clear that people wear masks due to the pollution. Why argue further?

Trump to Cut Federal Funding to Sanctuary Cities Amid Immigration Clash
Purdey replied to Social Media's topic in World News
I can only presume that the citizens in these sanctuary cities voted for their local representatives and are in favour of the policies (that they voted for). Then along comes the federal government and says, We don't care who you elected and what policies you voted for, we don't need your form of democracy. -

So you want to live in the rural area about 1 hour of Bangkok
Purdey replied to camper star's topic in General Topics
Nonthaburi the next province north of Bangkok used to be recognized as the best place to live in Thailand for to its countryside, department stores and hospitals. That was some years ago but it is still better than Bangkok itself. -

Poll -- Who will cave first in the momentous China-USA trade war?
Purdey replied to Jingthing's topic in Political Soapbox
The U.S. really needs to halve its wage bill if it is to compete against China. The other alternative is for the U.S. to build autonomous plants that do not require labor. Either way, a lot of people will be upset. -
Meet the Thailand dolls! Which one are you ?
Purdey replied to CharlieH's topic in ASEAN NOW Community Pub
I have seen quite a few of those young, crew cut American lads who wear short-sleeved white shirts and long black trousers and dress shoes. Trying to persuade Thais to convert to their brand of Christianity. https://tse3.mm.bing.net/th/id/OIP.Y4n75iSVrrA0ZkXEH6zgOQAAAA?rs=1&pid=ImgDetMain -
THAI's Sky-High Deal: 45 Dreamliners to Revamp Fleet

I have to wonder whether the price will rise over the next few years. At least 12 countries make parts for Boeing, and all of them have to pay Trumptax. -

It was probably gearing down, surely? Usually, the crew does not allow you to stand up and go to the lavatory during takeoff and landing. -

Thaksin Warns: Thailand's Economic Woes Worse Than 1997 Crisis
Purdey replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
So, he says the country is in the mud and sinking. Not one idea for how to help get the country out of the hole or mitigate the effects of the crisis. Create a skilled populace. Diversify manufacturing. Make things that other countries want. Investigate mining potential. Not a single idea. -

Thailand Tackles US Tariffs: Plans for Trade Reform Unveiled
Purdey replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
Thailand should spread its wings and instead of selling goods to the USA, seek out new and growing markets elsewhere. Africa is the next Asia and selling cheap automobiles there will be better than an unreliable trade partner. -
Commanders Face Heat Over Army Conscript Abuse Scandal
Purdey replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
The professional soldiers in Thailand I have met tend to be very hard men. I wouldn't get on their bad side. Conscripts are much softer and are not people you would worry about meeting in a dark alley. Better to go with a fully professional military. -
Not a complete plan but a start: using taxation is not unusual when needed. Roosevelt raised taxes on the rich, with top marginal tax rates reaching 79% by 1936. Eisenhower - a conservative Republican if ever there was one - maintained a top marginal tax rate of 92% for the highest earners, a rate he inherited from the Truman administration. Yes, 92%. Although Reagan is known for tax cuts, the highest marginal rate during his presidency was 70% in 1981, which he later reduced to 50% then 28%. Guess when the national debt started to rise dramatically? Why, in the 1980s of course. The increase was largely driven by substantial tax cuts and increased defense spending under President Reagan. By the end of Reagan's presidency in 1989, the national debt had grown to approximately $2.7 trillion. So, raise taxes on the rich and cut defense spending are two ways to help the economy.
