  1. Supply chain disruptions?
  2. Haven't been to Pattaya since 2016. Any changes I should be aware of (bars, shopping...)?
  3. Not to mention, he used xenophobia as a tool to benefit himself and his family politically and financially.
  4. Damn. And Thailand isn't even oil-rich like Venezuela.
  5. Just answering in English, perhaps using complex sentences and vocabulary might help. Or you could mention that you're busy now, asking for the caller's private number so that you can call back later. If they reply that they'd rather not give out their private number for people to call them, say: "Now you know how I feel...", and hang up.
  6. I'm aware that Thailand, esp. in the past, had its share of refugees. But it's a question of definition: "An asylum seeker is a person looking for protection because they fear persecution, or they have experienced violence or human rights violations. A refugee is a person who asked for protection and was given refugee status. They may have been resettled in another country or be waiting for resettlement."
  7. It's big business! The asylum seekers pay good money to be channeled through different countries, hoping to recover it easily once they arrive in the destination country, and resourceful smuggling gangs profit from this lucrative business...
  8. Funny. The UN never complains that other countries (e.g. China, Thailand, Japan, etc.) hardly ever take in asylum seekers. If China or Japan accepted, as a percentage of their population, as many asylum seekers as Western countries, probably all asylum seekers in the world could easily find a new home. After all, they are 'fleeing from war and other harm', right? So, why does the large majority have to be taken in by Western countries only?
  9. No, but the expected 1.8 billion income from it has already been divided up...
  10. China, no doubt, will benefit from it. And they don't even have to invest or loan a penny...
  11. The noise, pollution, and overcrowding would be unbearable. A bit like a Chinese subway station at rush hour... ????
  12. He should tell that to Immigration, esp. at all entry points.
  13. Had to visit police stations in Thailand twice. Thonglor Police Station, cops busy playing games on the (work) computer, while in Pattaya the female officer suggested taking two tourists, who wanted to report the theft of a wallet, to a ladyboy bar... Nuff said.
  14. Are they still the same 'size'?
  15. Just a few days ago I had Chinese-born security staff going through my bags at Sydney Airport. - Her accent was so bad, I couldn't understand questions she asked (e.g. "So you like reading?" - I had books in my carry-on) the first time, and had to ask her to repeat her question five times. I'm usually good at understanding different accents, but Chinese Australian officials trying to speak English... ????
  16. Yes, and the 'foreign tourist of unknown nationality, Mr. Fiorenzo Cardinali' may or may not be Italian...
  17. Of the banks I have had business over the years... 1. Bangkok Bank 2. Krungsri Bank 3. SCB 4. Kasikorn Bank 5. Krungthai Bank. But it really depends on the individual branches here.
  18. You're aware that they are different entities, and you cannot do any Thailand-account transactions, except, perhaps, money transfer or credit/debit card transactions, which you can do at any other UK bank? But yes, Bangkok Bank seems to have the more professional staff (incl. language skills), and staff aren't as slow as, say KTB staff.
  19. Opening an account with SCB as a foreigner has always been a challenge. Used to be that it was possible with a recommendation by a current account holder.
  20. Wasn't there word of "dirty farangs" from government ministers not so long ago? Perhaps the cashier preferred giving the change to a Thai...
  21. Yeah, I'm sure she wants to become a public servant after she made all that money...
