What are the positive and negative reasons for living in Thailand?
Pro's: Affordability (both for renting and buying land/property). Eating out is cheap. Convenience of shopping at 7/11, Big C, Lotus's and CJ. Availability and affordability of local community hospital services and High Street clinics. Specialist dental services extremely good value. Reliability of water, electricity and internet/mobile service. Cheap and comfortable internal air and coach travel. Railways are an option and improving. Con's: March/April can be too hot. Wish I was elsewhere. Soi dogs and everyone turning their pets loose. Excrement everywhere. Lack of choice in bread, butter and cheese. Pies and pastries are not common.

Thai SSO Yellow Book
My Amphur was also insisting that I would need to go back to the British Embassay in Bangkok and obtain another translated/certified copy of my passport having already recently provided same for marriage. This I wasn't prepared to do so abandoned my quest for a Yellow House Book/Pink ID card. Some time later, by chance, my Thai Mrs spoke to our Amphur Customer Service Manager at one of our mobile blood donor sessions. He told his staff to copy the same information and my Yellow Book/Pink ID card was issued a few days later.

Excessive and unrelenting nasal discharge.
Began 12 months ago. Many people at this time reported huge amounts of thick green mucous discharge. Mine finally stopped after 6 months. Left with permanent pain around the eyes. After only a few weeks discharge recommenced although with less quantity. After a further six months it still continues. Makes any travelling unpleasant because the force and quantity is too great for paper handkerchieves to cope with. Mrs has purchased lots of those small bags of various tablets dispensed by our local nurse. Today I noticed my sense of taste has gone. That’s good in a way because I can now eat things I previously detested! Anyone else suffering same? Is there anything that can be done?

Which is the best air conditioning brand out there?
Mitsubishi Heavy Industries are quiet and powerful. Neighbour transplanted a 20 year old unit and it works perfectly. Forgot to turn ours off in wife's shop when we went away on holidays. Noticed very little difference in the next monthly electricity bill. It was already installed in our shop when we first took it on 17 years ago. Never broken down.

Why is Thai health care so good?
Did you ever find out if the 'odd' method was out-of-date or a recommended alternative at that time etc.?

Why is Thai health care so good?
Made me think of my medical and dental experiences. When a doctor (or dentist) shouts 'My God!, who did that?' it rather undermines your confidence in those professionals.

Why is Thai health care so good?
Good advice. I stopped looking when I found out the upper age limit was 60.

Why is Thai health care so good?
Interesting but also disturbing thank you. For those of us who've never had an annual medical a new 'first' check up would obviously be required. Is this fairly standardized? How far do they go? Any advice would be much appreciated on this!

Teacher in Thailand found live-streaming inappropriate content while teaching
Sad, she may have been a very good teacher. Very tough too, not a case of indecent exposure even!

NHS Treatment
Amazingly, no pain at all. Anaesthetic spray up nostril, tiny crystals on a probe inserted. Less than a two minute job. I never expected to be turned away when all I wanted/needed was that. Not impressed with UK NHS anymore I'm afraid.

NHS Treatment
Good that you got sorted eventually, and at zero cost! I paid National Insurance contributions for 50 years (16 to 66). I've kept my UK address where I return from time to time. Last time there I experienced a nose bleed. Took 45 minutes to stop it. As I was flying back to Thailand in a few days I wanted to avoid a possible repetition on the aeroplane. Unpleasant for me, crew and other passengers. I went to a walk-in clinic (attached to my local NHS hospital A/E dept). The doctor refused to cauterise my nose, making the excuse that it had stopped bleeding now and he wouldn't be able to see where it had come from. Told me to go home. Very strange, I had my nose cauterised in 1971 and the doctor back then had no such difficulty!

Eye test? Pattaya - kinda like you get in the UK at an optician
Thanks again Sheryl. I sort of suspected it might not be necessary. I can confirm that my optician is a High Street optometrist offering eye tests under NHS and privately. https://www.dineenopticians.co.uk/eye-examinations

Haircuts
Late sixties, minimal straggly and greasy hair. Try to avoid my Mrs doing anything to my hair/head. It is always painful and draws blood. She has invested in electric shears and a mini version designed for ear and nasal hair removal. Instead, I go every 2/3 weeks to a barber for number 0 on head and beard. After that I have cutthroat razor on both head and beard. Always feel better with complete removal. My Mrs says I should be paying 100 baht but it doesn't seem enough so I always give 150.

Eye test? Pattaya - kinda like you get in the UK at an optician
Great information thank you Sheryl. I have an eye examination whenever I return to the UK by my local optometrist. It has, for a long time, included a digital image of the eye which I understand to be OCT. In the last couple of years I have also been offered an Optomap scan (for additional cost). I have, so far, declined the Optomap scan. In your opinion, is this something worth having?

What do you think of women with tattoos?
My Thai stepdaughter is a recently qualified tattoo artist. She is good at art IMHO. I have asked her why she can't draw/paint on paper instead of indelibly upon skin. Her answer; 'I couldn't make any money doing that'.

Those with bald heads too!

Eye Problems
Thanks for your information! Good to know these things for future reference. Myself and Thai family have received excellent treatment at Queen Sirikit Heart Centre and at the Regional Government Hospital both in Khon Kaen.

Health Insurance for the over 70’s
The irony is that many leave their home country because they cannot afford to pay Council Tax and astronomical Winter heating bills. If those essential expenses are unaffordable for them, how do they expect to pay medical bills when outside their totally free National Health Service?
