  1. Once again, you are thinking short term.

Fly In Fly Out workers.  Snowbirds.  Contract workers. Semi retired workers.  People who work 6 months and have 6 months off.  Oil and Gas workers.  People with passive incomes.

All of the above, are not piss poor pensioners.

Actually, many of the above, and their big money, have already left.

Classifying the above people as "tourists" was a big mistake by the Thai authorities.  That's a considerable loss of revenue from these big spenders, but hey, the Chinese holiday package tourists is where the money is now.   [emoji1787]  [emoji1787]
Show me where tourists are affected. All the drama now revolves around beleive it or not pensioners!
  2. Good question!

I was given a temporary printout-again residential address required-and the card itself posted to me-that took about a month.

Because I cannot drive-(no leg) I got a photo ID.But be warned any outstanding fines will need to be paid.I got stung for missing out on an election. Then fought them for months about the other missing 9 elections...federal,state and local.
Good information for me. Did they want to see a lease on a property? Or a letter saying your a flatmate etc. I plan on using air bnb for the first few months

  3. Yes-I was away for more then 5 years.Driver's License and Medicare expired.

I guess that I kept up correspondence with the DSS,the Aussie embassy an the Gov't throughout the medical crisis and they kinda knew that I was on my way.

Medicare was not in itself a problem-as long as I had an address- but the medicos definitely required assurance that I was here to stay.

Thanks for the info how about your pension card?

  4. Umm..I didn't say anything about wine and cheese bills..
Like TTU I have emphasized the wisdom of being flexible and having a Plan B if things go wrong either financially or medically.

In my case,as I have mentioned,it was cancer which progressed rapidly, lost the leg..developed a secondary infection, had my immune system smashed and required a desperate dash for home.
The benefits of so doing are obvious..and I have sternly advised a Dutch friend to do the same.

I had Thai insurance-but they simply priced me out on age and pre-existing conditions.

Addit:Like Gin Boy-the place had lost it's shine anyway.
Your in oz? How did you get Medicare assuming you were away more than 5 years

I would love to choose Thai Airways for frequent trips to Europe and other destinations, but they are usually 40%-50% more expensive than other full fare carriers. Until they become competitive on the basis of price, they will never increase their revenues. The proposed purchase of new aircraft is not the solution- being competitive is. They have recently downgraded the  benefits for their frequent flier program (as have other carriers I use- such as United), so they are not alone in that. They are also not winning in the service category compared to ANA, Emirates, Etihad, or Cathay Pacific.

new planes = lower fuel consumption and thats how airlines make their profit, its all about the fuel and bums on seats of course

Ah mate! I think you have not been here long enough, "drop your living standards"? While petrol is the same price as Oz you can get your old unroadworthy  gas guzzler repaired for cents on the dollar, you never really have to watch your speedo when driving and if you have 3 beers after work you're not terrified to drive home! The food is as good as you're prepared to pay likewise your accommodation!

Cheer up! you're a long time dead!

me? not talking about me , I bought a big condo 12 years ago lower sukhimvit and love living here. Im talking about most people I know living in a shoe box. Who cares about cars, no farang drives a car where I live.

Most of the locals are still earning less than $100/month.

Asian economies may be growing but the proletarians wages don't appear to be.

Not in bangkok. My GF earns nearly double my pension. Take a look at the cars on Sukhumvit, not a single Klunker or rust bucket amongst them all shiny and new. When Im in OZ I see 15 year old cars all the time . The story spread by farang that Thais are poor is a myth in 2019

  8. I'm one of the thousands, had 5 trips to government hospital in the last four weeks (3 were to emergency).
My hospital bill was 1,500bht ........... (paying from 600bht to 77bht per visit)

Tell me why I need insurance again?
Bit of a wait (2-5hrs) each visit, didn't mind the 50bht extra foreigner charge on the bill, but can't fault the service
Sure until you have full body stroke and then end up with double pneumonia like my body did. 1.5 million baht
