  1. For Thais the paramount point is impressing other people with the level of luxury and design and cost compared to other ministries and other countries. . Even though 99% of the folks who will see these chairs are the same people at every meeting. I went to many meetings of one ministry (which has a big global impact), the furniture was replaced several times, obviously very very expensive, same for the crockery, all part of trying to impress people. Plus a famous Thai pastry chef was an employee and made cakes, pastries for every meeting and personally served them to the seniors in every meeting. Same for coffee, a famous coffee roaster on staff and at every meeting; Thai man who spoke good English. As folks arrived he asked them if they liked fresh coffee then asked questions about their favorite coffee. I answered 'I like hilltribe coffee'. He froze. The Head of the ministry changed and a Tai man who had worked abroad in the same industry was appointed to the position. He shook things up; he issued and instruction that furniture was not to e changed or swapped for 10 years, he cancelled the pastry chef and the coffee expert. Then he discovered the cakes/pastries were being bought daily by a team of 4 staff, all bought from a nearby famous Thai restaurant / bakery. The team of 4 was a leader who chosen because she came from a famous Thai family. CEO cancelled that and instructed that a junior staff member go alone to the bakery and buy standard cakes / pastries. In another post I will share how the new CEO shook up / reorganized the existing HR department.
  2. I guess some members can recall the vert outrage cost for clocks for the new parliament building.
  3. No real need, this has been confirmed many times before. Different culture different attitudes and laws. In some parts of Australia it's illegal to drive any vehicle wearing thongs (on your feet).
  4. Stupid comment, not appreciated. Kids are sensitive. I've put you on ignore.
  5. Wow, less than important, I never timed these calls, why would I? I mean within perhaps a few seconds to 20 seconds. No further comment from me on this. Bye.
  6. Not always true - Thai's (like all people) s love gossip even when it's unimportant.
  7. Another angle - I wouldn't just pay the 800 and leave the bill for the balance of 900 unpaid. Why? at that moment in time and later for quite a while my son would have been horrified about how he and me would be badmouthed. I wouldn't put my son in that situation. Perhaps I would have spoken privately / quietly to the loud ordered an Ice cream cake which was my son's choice, and mentioned 'now I'm not sure how to handle the bill for a lot of extra ice cream which was not needed because a full cake was already ordered and did arrive'.
  8. 'tight', 'stingy', 'not good'... You're surprised about that? Do you know as a fact who paid the 900Baht balance - the cost of the sundaes? - was it the loud mouth woman - did she pay the whole 1,700Baht? - Or did all the kids pay for their own sundaes, in total 900Baht?
  9. Is it established that the documents relate directly to the construction of the building?
  10. He is in fact highly respected by the people as a good listener, good organizer and fixer. He speaks advanced English.
  11. Yes, 3:04 am Sundays. I've called them from Thailand on the toll free number several times. I called at the time I realized I needed to clarify something. Call always answered in less than a minute. Always good listener, clear answer, always polite. They don't bite. Give it a try but don't call with a negative attitude.
  12. Perhaps email to [email protected] and ask for an instruction. I've asked many questions on this email address, always got a clear answer in English, within about 3 to 5 days.
  13. and because they were told to not vote him in by their military masters. So much for free and fair elections.
  14. Maybe now moved on to Thermae heaven.
  15. More: Just after the event In a media interview she sated that it was impossible for the building to have come down from an earthquake because all buildings in Thailand are designed and build to be earthquake proof.
  16. and / or attracts big export tariffs.
  17. My guess is that many folks will be curious about this question. Nothing wrong with learning, may be useful for the future for some folks.
  18. You didn't list 'getting information re shopping'.
  19. The mother of all jokes... America has changed enormously, no long exceptional, now has a leader who is convicted felon, a conman, a serial liar and centers everything on his massive ego, regardless of showing any leadership re law, values or morals.
  20. Do the new regulations mention 'qualified to install', and 'regular inspection' and 'maintenance' protocols?
  21. Perhaps you should check: - Does the job application say 'expected salary per year or per month' ? In Thailand 'per month' is the usual way this is expressed.
