  1. Another similar but different example. I went into the Australian army, 2 years compulsory conscription, went to the war in Vietnam. Only child in the family. There was much criticism that neither the the Aust. gov't nor the miliary was making any contact with families at home. After I was in Vn for about 1 year my parents got a surprise visit from about 10 officers from a local part-time military unit. My dad answered the doorbell and there's this large military group at the door, all in uniform, many carrying huge bunches of flowers. Dad didn't know if they were local of whatever. He called mum. When mum spotted this mob she assumed I had been killed in Vn. Dad said 'what happened, they didn't speak, in fact they had no specific message. After some silence they left. Dad called numerous gov't / military offices but got no clear answers. Mum and dad wrote to me immediately but of course if took about 10 days for me to get their letter. I asked my CO if it was possible to make a quick welfare call to dad and I explained why. My CO at that time was a veteran and well experienced and a gentleman. He sat me down and stated to make calls re how to connect a phone call back to Australia. After several hours I had a booking for a multi connection call to Aust. I spoke to dad and mum. My CO also spoke to them quickly, he realized they would be very concerned about whether I was dead or alive and he made a serious apology and assured them I was alive and unhurt.
  2. And many offer very tasty foods, transaction all done in 1 minute, walk away and eat.
  3. Which is why my Thai son and his wife (with 4 kids) have family van and a small 3 door sedan, so they can take their kids to school and pick them up every day. They live 3 to 5 km from the 3 good bilingual schools involved. Luckily son's wife works from home and son has flexible work hrs.
  4. Well there's good and bad people / types in every country. -
  5. IIRC? Just remembered, if I remember correctly ??
  6. This is a strange thread. The answer is case by case and according to the items purchased etc. In some cases hard to answer because husband bf and the wife gf pool a certain amount / all of their take home income and payment for meals comes from that pool.
  7. Many western girls / women, all continents, have hairy legs. Just part of nature.
  8. There's now no need for further information on this subject as per my original post. I'm lost as to why suddenly it as become bordering on toxic. As in posts just above I have thanked the members who shared facts and valuable information. Hoping this thread can be closed.

  10. Macquarie Bank has been asking or a lot of detail about my 'status' with the ATO and my tax status in Thailand. I queried why they need info re Thailand, they withdrew the request.
  11. I'm 80. I'm blessed in that: -I live with my Thai son 43 years old, his Thai wife and 4 kids. -Son has excellent education including sociology, mental health and more. -Son is always thinking about items / activities / responsibilities he could pass to me. Why? He's concerned I might get bored.
  12. An American man in my village here in Chiang Mai says he loves spaghetti carbonara but will only order it in restaurants in NYC.
  13. Yes, I mean all transport options. And there's many other 'situations' which have serious monitoring in many other countries which are lax or non-existent in the LOS. One example is the construction industry; there's continuous incidents which result in large sections of building under construction falling down and there's regular deaths. There's also the regular deaths at zebra crossings, and you regularly see cars, m/cycles, trucks, buses etc., making no attempt to stop for pedestrians. This situations has multiple faults, and proper monitoring to collect valuable data to help construct better laws and better equipment is just one missing item.
  14. Would be nice to see some specific fact based comment about the provision of life jackets and some comment on the regular monitoring of these boats by an appropriate government agency.
  15. Thanks for your great but not so polite advice. I have made it plain already that I've received good advice on this thread and said thanks in the public thread and in PMs. I will visit the MFA office when I have accumulated all the documents I want to take there. This will take a week or more then I'll visit. Thanks again to all for sharing some information.
  16. From above: "You are over stating the importance of retired expats in Thailand." Agree. I laugh when I hear / read posts claiming that millions of Thai families / half of essan is totally supported by foreigners. This is just not true.
  17. Because of quite bad incidents many schools in Thailand totally forbid teachers from helping kids to start social media accounts.
  18. I have a problem with an online taxi service. I key in my address which gives a well known / registered gated moo bahn address. But on screen the pin is sometimes (not every time) showing in the next moo bahn. Taxi cannot find me so I then use the box provided to send a written message direct to the driver restating my full correct address (automatically translated to Thai). I've written to the online taxi service, they say the pin system is owned by another company who refuse to listen to issues / comments.
  19. If there was a claim the insurance company would very likely respond: 'Where does the policy say New Years Lanterns' ?
  20. My mothers family all died 97, 98, 100, to 103. My dad died at 70, almost all of his 9 siblings and his father all died about 70, all had sudden heart attacks, all had a long history of heart murmurs. I'm 80, no serious illnesses ever, no regular medications, no heart conditions, no heart murmurs, never had a day in hospital, hoping for 100.
  21. A different question; is Boeing safe, or would you aim for a flight using Airbus?
