  1. Could be alcohol dependency, boredom. Or they just don’t have much to do in their lives. So the bar is their main social outlet.
  2. I took a river cruise about four years ago when I first initially visited Bangkok. I went with a Thai woman I was dating at the time. The cruise was very nice and relaxing. Had some entertainment. It was a buffet. The food was average. Nothing great. Different companies offer different options at different price points. And some over smaller boats , less people, and table side service instead of buffet.
  3. I sent the form by Thai Post Registered Mail. It took a l while to get there. But arrived no problem. I suggest you go to the US Embassy website in Bangkok. They have an SSA office in Manila. You can email them explaining the issue.
  4. I’m guessing the police knew enough English to get him to pay the fine. So speaking Thai makes no difference. They are looking at you as a foreigner. Not as a Thai speaker.
  5. You are your own person. You are not obligated to give anything to anyone or participate in their nonsense. Just because Thais do certain things doesn’t mean you have to do them. I’m sure that if your coworkers had a job in another country. They wouldn’t feel obligated to do the same things as workers in that country. And I’m sure you are possibly being treated differently because you are a foreigner. Just like the employee asking why you didn’t bring her anything for her birthday. Maybe the culture should concentrate more on honesty and respect. Instead of seeing how much they can get from a foreigner.
  6. I’m guessing it’s a rental. It would be easier to just ask the the owner. Different people will say yes and no. But the only way to get a definitive answer is to ask the actual owner of the mattress.
  7. Did they give a specific reason why it wasn’t available but still advertised.? Sometimes specials are only offered at certain days and times. I would have gotten a specific answer from them. Just because someone wants something, doesn’t mean they are entitled to it. It’s not uncommon for restaurants or other types of establishments to advertise like this. They offer promotions. But once inside they also have other higher priced options. Hoping people will also take them also. But if that was false advertising that’s a different story.
  8. It depends what a person can accept living in a place. Some things would concern and bother a person, some won’t. I have have lived in Bangkok for almost three years now. The only reason I came here to experience living overseas. It was easy for me to get a yearly visa. I did not move here for financial reasons or health insurance reasons. Income and insurance are not an issue for me. And I did not move here because I disliked my own country. Personally I don’t like living here. I can live a better life in the states. I just don’t like the overall environment. Without going into great detail. Yes the West has many issues. But so does Thailand. And a persons life is based on what they have accomplished. Not their country. When I was younger, I didn’t have much money. But I adjusted my life and improved myself. My country didn’t stop me. I will be moving back to the states by the middle of next year.
  9. So far the new generation vaccine is not available in Thailand. I spoke to one of my doctors at Bumrungard Hospital a few days ago. She said maybe next year. She also mentioned some sort of issue regarding private hospitals purchasing the vaccine themselves. I didn’t understand the whole explanation. But according to her they are waiting for the government to approve and purchase it. Of course it’s all speculation at this time. Nothing definitive.
  10. I have lived in Bangkok almost three years. Many women here are not much different than other places. They see a foreigner as a walking ATM. And the majority of the bargirls here are not from Bangkok. Just because a girl is from Bangkok. Doesn’t mean she has a good job and won’t try to take advantage of you. Or act any differently. And many of them are not originally from Bangkok
  11. And I’m sure there aren’t any absurd things in Thailand. Amazing the way some people always criticize the West But turn a blind eye to other places. The things mentioned might be not considered the norm. But that’s part of freedom. If people want conformity, strict controls on how people think. Well maybe a place like North Korea might be an option. And I personally wouldn’t go by TicToc and YouTube if a person is looking for total rationality.
  12. Maybe these people that are mentioned shouldn’t be wandering around drunk and take some sort of accountability for themselves. And as of the graffiti artist. Well if you do the wrong thing. Then the consequences might not be in your favor.
  13. The GOP probably would have done better if Trump wasn’t in the picture. Even some republicans switched sides. Both candidates and voters. The people hanging on to Trump think he is going to save them. Maybe make them millionaires. The only thing he is interested in is publicity, ego, and his own gain.
  14. It’s a lot of money for a person that age to have. And I did wonder how she was able to save all that money at her age. I’m surprised that wasn’t asked when she was interviewed. But it was on Tic Toc. But kudos to her. The young lady did a very nice gesture. Buying a ring for her mother.
  15. The title is not much different compared to elections in some other parts of the world.
  16. I can see if they traveled all the way here to study human trafficking procedures. But illegal fishing?
  17. Not every person charged with a crime has their passport taken away. The person has to be considered a flight risk by the court for that. And the type of crime is also taken into consideration.
  18. It depends on each individual’s beliefs and situations. Can’t compare one person to another.
  19. The vaccines prevent you from getting seriously sick. Not really prevent you from getting it. And keep in mind. The Moderna boosters in Thailand. They are generation one type. Not the newest that protects against Omicron and the latest variants. The number of hospitalizations and serious illness are way down. Due to the vaccines. And the question is. Are people who say “ Oh they had symptoms and it was nothing “. Did they get tested and actually have Covid? Or did they have the flu or viral infection? Thinking they had Covid? And I find the people that are not vaccinated or downplay the vaccine . If they test positive and have serious symptoms or are hospitalized. They whine about how they should have gotten vaccinated.
  20. During my three years living in Bangkok. I visited Pattaya once for two days with a girl I was dating at that time. The impression it gave me for the average expat. It’s like living in a smaller city in Thailand with less expensive rents. I thought the people both foreigners and locals were friendlier than Bangkok. It seemed like more Thais spoke English there. As for a lot of so called “ dregs of society” type foreigners living there. . Well you can find those types anywhere. Even in the villages.
  21. I wouldn’t be taking your relatives to places such as Soi Cowboy, Nana , etc. it’s not a boys night out looking for women and cheap booze. One option is you can take them to Asiatique on the river. A lot of nice restaurants there. And you can walk along the river front.
  22. I have lived in Bangkok almost three years. I have also visited Chiangmai and Pattaya. Both gave me the impression both were more low key and friendlier then Bangkok. In Pattaya I felt more Thais spoke English than in Bangkok.
