Is there any way to check if my US phone will work with 5G in Thailand (without currently being in Thailand).  It seems just having a 5G phone is no guarantee because it depends on particular frequencies that each carrier supports.

Either True/AIS/Dtac have a list of 5G phones they support, or do they list their 5G frequencies that I can check against my phone specs....?

Did it not occur to you to post the exact model of phone in the first place?

Ah, I understand your questioning!  I stayed there while I was waiting for delivery of other Lazada and Aliexpress parcels.  Some arrived within a few days, others took weeks!  This parcel is the final one.  Actually, the monthly rate is about 5,000 baht for a quite-acceptable air-con room.

5,000 is quite okay, especially if it fits with your needs.

I think you mean "reasoning", rather than "questioning".

Depends on your expectations; now and in the future. Also the size and conditions of the viewing room together with the sources of media you will utilise.

Basically, there is no such thing as a free withdrawal from a foreign bank in Thailand.

One way or another, you pay for it. At the ATM, via a lower exchange rate, via card issuer fees, via home bank transaction or cash advance fees, via yearly fees and conditions. Any of the home banks that reimburse fees etc, usually have huge yearly fees, minimum balance and minimum monthly deposits.

Wrong. I don't think most people would regard the Mastercard/Visa rate as a "lower exchange rate".

Many can take advantage of the Mastercard/VISA rate with no other fees at all. No need for reimbursement, as there is no fee charged in the first place. Credit cards in the main, but sometimes debit cards are accepted.

The LG UP8000 is an entry-level budget 4k TV. It replaces 2020's LG UN7300 and UN8500, and like its predecessors, it also uses an ADS panel, which performs much like an IPS panel. This type of panel has wide viewing angles, making it a great choice for a wide seating arrangement, but it's not a good choice for a dark room, as it has low contrast and no local dimming feature to improve dark room performance. Unfortunately, it doesn't get very bright, so it struggles to combat intense glare, and it's certainly not bright enough to deliver a satisfying HDR experience. It can't display a wide color gamut, either, so vivid colors appear dull and muted in some HDR content. It has a good response time, so motion in sports or games looks clear; however, its 120Hz backlight flicker causes some image duplication. Lastly, while it has incredibly low input lag, its refresh rate is limited to 60Hz, and it doesn't support any advanced gaming features, like variable refresh rates or HDMI 2.1 bandwidth.

    https://h-m-entertainment.com/lg-up8000-review

These kind of TVs talk about everything, but the quality of the screen...

Function such as HDR need something like a 700-nit screen to be effective. The LG is probably under 350. But perhaps that's okay for the OP. Depends on whether he is the type to want to get the best out of the TV.

The published phone numbers don't connect....

However, Thailandpost tells me that the parcel was accepted today (the reception staff finally remembered what I told them about my absence!).  I'll drive back to Pattaya tonight.

    @Bruno123, I don't understand your comment....

It seems like a place you would stay for a few nights on a budget. But you state two months so far.

Renting an apartment would like have been better value; from as little as 4k per month.

Looking to buy a 'big' TV (with bluetooth and Apple 2 (is it called?))......but, being a cheap Charlie, not looking to pay a fortune.

Glancing at 80"+ UHD TV's the pictures looks amazing, but then everyone raves about the pricier OLED's.

I guess in terms of my pocket, it comes down to a very big UHD versus a not so big OLED.

I would be interested to hear any suggestions as to which way you would go.

You are comparing cabbages with oranges. UHD refers to screen resolution, whilst OLED refers to the method of lighting(or not) of the screen.

If you meant ULED, that is a description utilised by HiSense only.

For an 80" screen, you would expect a UHD screen at a minimum. OLED is obviously going to be above your budget at that size. if you cannot afford it, then look at Full Array Local Dimming and Mini LED TV as an alternative.

New SIM. Want to use it only as a substitute for broadband internet in the home.

If new SIM, then there is no need to limit yourself to Truemove H.

If you have an existing SIM, add a cheap full speed day pack and run a speed test to see the maximum speed available from that network at your location.

But DTAC and Truemove H have unlimited 30 Mbps packs available through distributors for 265 baht per month.

DTAC have an unlimited 30 Mbps 12 month pack for 1890 baht.

AIS Marathon is only 100 GB of 15 Mbps for 12 months, for 1790.  Though they have available unlimited 15 Mbps for 200 baht per month; including free calls to any network.

Yes, there are hundreds of girls working off the apps, and in my opinion, it will only gain in popularity with the girls, as you have posted, and with the tourists.

I have never suggested the apps will totally dismantle the current lady drink and bar fine business model, but it will certainly effect the bottom line of many establishments.

The only question is, by how much, and for those with thin margins, of which there are many, without a market correction in rents, they will struggle to survive, particularly as they must raise their drink prices.

It was happening pre covid, boomed during covid, will continue post covid, and is here to stay.

Your post alludes to only cheap charlies using the apps.  This is not the case.  They offer convenience for all, without a lot of the bar BS and pricing.

The lady drink and bar fine business model served many bar owners well over the years, thus, Thai landlords as well, alas, times are changing, as we have seen in other industries.

No, that was your interpretation. I was referring to the girls.

I don't criticise people for how much money they have or choose to spend.

Funny how you call me a troll, then set about trolling me.  ????

My point is, the was no big bounce back, as many predicted.

The term "pent up demand" was thrown about a lot, but the demand may not be as great as many had thought.

I agree, but there really is no excuse for their rulings in the past recent months, which has hurt a lot of businesses.

Wrong.  Many did. A lot of renovations took place in readiness.

Isn't this what TAT was doing, pre covid?  Example:  1 million Chinese fly in next week, how many of them do you see in bars in Central Pattaya?

Indians are returning, great for the girls on Beach Road, but how many of them do you see in bars in Central Pattaya?

You can talk up the numbers all you like, but it's the traditional market that keeps many hospitality businesses afloat, and that market has rushed back to Pattaya in big numbers.

    Figures were published.

    Here they are:

"In April, the top five tourists were from India (4,216), the United Kingdom (1,627), Japan (1,007), Korea (946), and Germany (940)."

    Not great, are they?

I have no doubt numbers will rise, heading into high season, but it must be remembered that many tourists also suffered financially because of covid.  It may take a few years to get back to pre covid numbers.

You've obviously never even looked at the apps, and seen all the girls working off them, yet here you are proclaiming it will have absolutely no effect on the bottom line for bars, and totally disregard them as competition to the traditional bar business model.  Now that's hilarious.  ????

Even if I'm not a fan of your long winded posts, every girl who looks like anything and even the ones who do not, are working from their mobiles and PCs.

One homeless girl actually asked me to help her to put a profile up on ThaiFriendly, just after I gave her money for food.

How did she even know about it?

I see girls in passing making appointments via mobile. 'Ghosts' on Beach Road suddenly calling a 'win' and making off to see a customer.

Only the most desperate having to succumb to the offers of 400 baht and perhaps even less of the Southern Asia tourists.

    c) It was explained to me by Thais that the Thai "thinking" works similar to this: The poor people and beggars give us the opportunity to do something good. We give them money and because we give them money we feel good because we did something good. So basically beggars do us a favor for giving us the opportunity to feel good.

I don't know how true this is but it sounds reasonable (for Thai thinking) to me.

    It's also my thinking...

Clarify  your point please. I merely report  facts in response to somebody's  description  of the CB area. A hidden gem! LOL!

    When? How many decades ago?

No people dont live in beautiful  restaurants with  unique  designs - they eat and drink in them and  they are a brilliant  addition  to the  area. Yes- there used to be tour buses - the tourists were visiting the two local views points. Currently  the  area is sadly  very  quiet and looking a bit shabby. I have no doubt it will be busy again. The small beach could do with better maintenance, piles if rubbish  being removed, a ban on techno music from the moored boats and encouraging  rather than banning small independent  bars and restaurants.

Condo of various sizes are available- 79 -100 sq mtr around 15 - 20k.

    Small brand new studios - 7 -12k

I lived on CB for 5 years and  moved to a nearby Soi on Pratumnak- for the  reasons outlined in my first  post Pratumnak  is one of the best places  to live in Pattaya.

My point was clear. Locals aren't likely to spend their time and money in overpriced restaurants and bars. It's not a "brilliant addition" for them for the most part.

There used to be a brilliant sea view there; something that could be enjoyed by everyone who lived and visited the place. Now it is completely blocked by those ostentatious places. I haven't visited any of them, as none of them provide anything of interest to me.

I already gave you a timeline. CB was dead on it's feet before the Russians arrived en masse.

Now all it has are those places blocking the sea view. Only weekend tourists from afar will visit there now....until the Russians return. The other part of Phra Tamnak might fare a bit better.

One of the best places to live in Pattaya? ???? That's not very hard now is it? But it would not be my choice these days.

I might have considered it many years ago, when it felt more like a hidden paradise. Now....meh. There are nicer places to be.

Locals aren't interested in pretentious restaurants. They want good transport links and perhaps a decent supermarket.

Of course you will not getting the tipping culture because you do not live in it.

I am aware of Japan and some others that consider tipping rude.

However, do you realize Thai people even tip other Thai after a massage?

Yes, Thais will tip 20 baht or nothing at all. How much do you claim that they tip?

There was no tipping culture in Thailand. It was introduced by tourists.

    Hello everyone,

I have read in several places that it is possible (or perhaps better to say "not impossible"!) to open a bank account at Bangkok Bank with a tourist visa.  Everything I have read stresses the importance of choosing the correct local bank branch.  Does anyone know at which branches in Pattaya this might be possible and what documents beyond the obvious ones like passport etc are needed?   Does any board member have first-hand experience doing this? Thanks for any comments/advice.

Just to add, that the Residence Certificate that you get from Jomtien Immigration will have the name of the bank at which you intend to apply; in this case, Bangkok Bank.

You'll need 'proof' of where you stay, such as a rental contract or hotel booking with receipt.

Once you have the Residence Certificate, take that along with your passport and the requisite amount of cash; I think it's 700 baht for the card and account and 500 for the opening balance.

Don't waste your time with other banks.

    Indeed....

One account opened was 12 years ago. Skip that as much has changed.

    Then this one.....

. "I showed my passport and a copy of the chanote for my condo and they gave me a bank account immediately (Krungsi)"...

When was this account opened and where.

The thing is you had a chanote as condo owner.

Perhaps reason why you obtained bank account.

Presumably you still had the other bank account from 12 years ago.

In any event don't think your circumstances are the typical joe that has a visa exempt stamp in his pp and wants to open a bank account.

No condo ownership and no previous bank account.

As I have pointed several times (as this thread keeps coming up) many are needing bank account as pathway to non O.

Granted the OP didn't indicate he is after a non O.

Have asked the OP to report back with his experience in Pattaya of opening Bank account on TV and even suggested a particular bank that being Kasikorn.

Hopefully an agent will not be required and also insurance not required.

    That was seriously long-winded.

They won't have any luck with Kasikorn, as they will want to see either a work permit or a long term visa.
