I am personally against abortion, on moral and faith grounds, (I am a Catholic), but to withhold medical treatment in a case such as this is (as) evil. The state, and legislation, and politics, should play no part in determining or dictating the healthcare available to women. It is not a place for a political "solution", or for the courts.

It is almost, as if, I don't know, they want to protect their women from coming under the threat and attentions of, umh, people like themselves. An aspect of this affair about which we hear little, but behind the foul and appalling grooming of these girls, which involves rape and abuse of vulnerable underaged girls - children - is a good old fashioned pimping operation.

Played a major role in the Obama administration, and when she stood for the Presidency, although defeated within the electoral college, won the popular vote convincingly. I don't like her but you can't take that away.

Second Assassination Attempt-Secret Service get Trump to safety
herfiehandbag replied to CharlieH's topic in World News
I read today, In a moment of exquisite irony, that the Federal lawyer leading the prosecution of this fellow is an immigrant. From Haiti. -
Hmm, but I don't think prison is much of a deterrent, Edwards is certainly an intelligent man, was an accomplished broadcaster and journalist, yet knowing the potential for a prison sentence if he was caught he was not deterred. I could perhaps have put my comments about losing reputation and career more, umh, accurately. I wanted to convey that from very high up, the absolute pinnacle, he fell rapidly and completely. I have no sympathy, but it is a punishment. Ego and savouring public approval play an important part in such people's lives, it has suddenly, and quite rightly, been ripped from him. That must hurt. If, as have been suggested, there were suspicions, or even knowledge of his proclivities amongst the BBC management then that certainly needs investigating - after Saville and Harris it would be astonishing if that were to be the case, and if so the BBC, holding it's unique place in British society, should be held to account. One or two have mentioned his pension: as you pointed out, I don't think that could be removed as the law stands, - so much to some peoples chagrin he will be a wealthy disgraced man. If he were in prison he would be a wealthy disgraced prisoner. The same is true as regards his - generous - salary. Until the BBC terminated his contract they were duty bound to pay him. Of course the BBC's possible tardiness in sacking him may repay close scrutiny, but that won't effect Edwards.

Surely it is academic (and don't call me Shirley!). Federal felony charges are very unlikely to come to trial before November 5th, and if they do certainly not to the stage of a conviction. If Trump wins then all the Federal charges will be dropped and various "deranged", "crooked" "witch hunters" will be summarily dismissed, and likely find themselves in one of his camps. Whilst he cannot pardon himself for state felony charges, and the existing convictions, states will find themselves under irresistible pressure to drop charges, and appeals on convictions will be fast tracked to the Supreme Court, which will, if Trump is President, swiftly dismiss the convictions. I think we can say that within a month of his inauguration his legal problems regarding felonies will go away, his financial penalties ordered by state courts will go the same way. No jail time, no financial sanctions, that is after all why he is running. If he loses on November 5th, then off he waddles to jail, and his business empire crashes down. Highest of high stakes. Perhaps in a couple of centuries, if I can borrow from Percy Shelley's sonnet "Ozymandias" "I met a traveller from Mount Rushmore, Who said—“Two vast and trunkless legs of stone Stand in the desert. . . . Near them, on the sand, Half sunk a shattered visage lies, whose frown, And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command, gaze on a Double Big Mac carved from stone. And on the pedestal, these words appear: My name is Trump, President of Presidents"

But, continuing on from my arguments in the Huw Edwards thread, I don't see any point in imprisoning them, at huge cost to the society they have held two fingers up at. Meaningful community service sanctions over a sustained period, which curtails their freedom coupled with large financial penalties, covering costs will hurt them, prison will simply make them martyrs.

I don't agree. What he did was utterly foul and reprehensible. Banging him up would achieve nothing. It would not deter others nor rehabilitate him. His reputation is shredded, his career ended. That is his punishment. I am, it may surprise you, and others, not a great fan of prison. If one takes the view that there are three purposes behind prison: to punish, that has in his case been done; to reform his behaviour, incarceration won't do that; to protect society, he is a broken down dirty old man, who poses no threat to society.

Second Assassination Attempt-Secret Service get Trump to safety

Interesting to muse: matey concealed himself (pretty ineffectually it turned out) in a shrubbery. Leaving aside the obvious Monty Python reference to the knights who say "Ni!", I can't but help but wonder how he knew that Trump would be playing golf on that day, at that time, on that golf course. Unless he had set up camp in the shrubbery in the hope that sooner or later Trump would play a round of golf. If it was a regular standing engagement, well known to the public, then it was pretty inept of the security people not to have checked and secured all likely firing positions overlooking the course, dogs are jolly handy for that. Of course, if it was a regular occurrence, day and time, one would rather have expected a coterie of admirers hanging about the boundary, in the hope of seeing their idol in action at the adjacent hole! Just casual thoughts... -
Teacher Barred After Smuggling Teenager to the UK as a "Slave"
herfiehandbag replied to Social Media's topic in World News
Not at all, we are after all so often told what the benefits to society are by allowing so many people from quite different cultures to come and live amongst us, particularly in positions of influence such as teachers, so I feel duty bound to mention it! You of course regard it as a "dog whistle", yet I am sure that many others would see it as a not unreasonable comment. -

Second Assassination Attempt-Secret Service get Trump to safety
herfiehandbag replied to CharlieH's topic in World News
Certainly an AK 47 is far from the ideal sniper weapon, and fitting it with a telescopic sight is rather like taking a spoonful of sugar with diabetes medicine to make it taste better! Apparently the Secret Service were alerted when they saw the barrel poking out of a shrubbery! Doesn't sound like the actions of an "expert"! Then again, looking at some of the photographs published on here of the suspect, with bandannas, body armour, a classic manic stare "et al", perhaps rational thought is not his strongest point! As has been pointed out, Florida has very lax gun laws (I nearly said liberal but that is a word much misunderstood these days). Sitting in a shrubbery clutching an AK 47 may be eccentric, but is It prosecutable? -

Trump and Loomer: The relationship That Needs Explaining
herfiehandbag replied to Patong2021's topic in Political Soapbox
Nothing to explain, it is quite obvious, albeit deeply, deeply disturbing. The mental images, oh the horror! But then I think, so what is 48 years if two people are so obviously bigly in love. And then another wave of horror crashes onto the beach... Mind you, it could explain why he is somewhat absent from campaigning - he probably needs quite a lot of "recovery time"; also it may explain Marjorie Taylor Green's umh, lukewarm response! All good healthy stuff! -

Aussie Arrested in Pattaya for Mafia Ties and Multiple Offences

If that photo is him, totally covered in tattoos, then it is quite remarkable that he managed to avoid our bold constabulary for 3 days let alone 3 months! I'm also astonished at the exquisite buffoonery which led one of these characters to "drop a gun" outside a nightclub!
