    One of the big scams they perpetrate is buying land. The person in charge that signs off on it usually gets a big brown envelope from the sellers for allowing the land sale to go through, often at vastly inflated prices. The land, bought under false pretences to be used for a sub-station or offices etc. is never used but remains an asset of the government dept.

    They could have made it a tourist tax and got the hotels etc. to collect it from foreigners as they do in Malaysia.

    More importantly, now protected by law against any criticism whatsoever.

    The economy is in real trouble. The 300thb was proposed to be levied on all visitors so they could use it for free medical treatment for tourists. Those of us who understand Thailand know that would never happen, and it was just another opportunity for graft and self-enrichment.

    It is, but it is faster, safer and more comfortable. It's also properly maintained. So you get what you pay for.

    I was on the Lonely Planet Thorn Tree forum in 2000. That was the original non-naughty/nightlife forum for visitors and expats in Thailand. I think there were other nightlife forums but I wasn't on them.

    I was about to post something similar. I know some of the owners of another 'Win' company... surely must be related.

    I know a couple of Thais that are convicted felons (in Thailand) that visited New Zealand fairly recently. Easy to get a 'clean Police record check' in Thailand if you know the right people. Also, their record keeping is not the best, and records often go 'missing'.

    They drive crazy over there in Myanmar, on the right side with right-hand drive cars.

    My neighbour has a cat on a chain. A number of other Thais in the moo baan leave their dogs outside all day in the heat while they are at work, often 12-14 hours per day.

    I trust bar-girls a lot more than Thai office girls. They are often far more honest about what they want in a 'relationship'. Working with Thai women in a manufacturing environment over the last 15 years has made me very wary of the so called 'good girls'.

    Indeed. Some of the biggest conmen in Thailand are farangs.

    Thaksin doesn't like us, that much has been very obvious since he first became PM in 2001.
