There are more people "on edge" in pattaya then other areas in thailand i have lived. the potential for problems is greater. personally, i don't see people being happy in pattaya, but others disagree.

When you see those blokes who like wine and air conditioning here, you know they won't last long here.

They saw it, just don't admit it. Think that by ignoring things it's not there. Or, think that since it's not bad for everyone (like somebody from a slum) that it's not "really bad" or unsightly.

They had noodles. Have not seen a newbie video in awhile. At least no food poisoning! The guesthouse must have been grungy and cheap. I wonder if they did it? Time to move on to college, career & family, and fond memories of "doing bangkok".

Bingo, yes! They were meant to be vacation rooms, not condo's. Felt very similar to cabins on a cruise ship, or a Disneyland hotel. These short term vacation rooms are rented out as condo's & apartments by the real estate agents here. I think that's what confuses many people. They see a year lease and think it's appropriate for long term stays. The older places are more like genuine living spaces.

I stayed in something similar in VT2B when I first came to pattaya while I looked for a long term place. I hated it after about a month. It was just too small. I would walk down the hallway and it was just door after door the same. Lots of old guys around "stuck" there in the small rooms. I'm just glad I could afford something bigger in a less crowded building. Would probably be ok if I was younger, but as an older guy (50's) the prospect of long term living or retirement in a place like that is pretty bleak.

It should not be an investment anyway. Buying real estate should be about setting down roots & staying put, or family. Trying to make money on real estate is pretty much a gamble. You're trying to time the market both buying & selling which doss not work for non-professionals. Like everything else it does not always go up, like real estste agents say, and when it crashes most people can't stay solvent and hold through the crash because circumstances change in other areas, like inflation, that make you need the money back.

People of lesser means don't ever (with few exceptions like maybe monks) really like people of more means. You can twist around the response with smiles or whatever, but it's envy at the root. Envy eventually leads to contempt and worse. It looks to tear you down so you no longer have more. It applies worldwide and across cultures.

How did they escape with that clear of a photo? -
After reflecting on this for some time, the best option I can come up with is doing a cash purchase of a small cabin on land in my home country in a semi rural affordable location, then just renting half the year in a vacation destination. If I buy a place in a foreign country, chances are I need to move back to home country at 70's or so anyhow. Happened to my neighbor.

A lot of the comments on this thread seem idiotic. The Thai's are not going to interpret things the way people are used to. The thinking is backwards here. The tax code will be interpreted in many different ways depending on who is talking, even if it's written down. The closest example I can think of is going to court and pleading guilty even if you're innocent, like they do here to save the court face or whatever.

Sounds funny, but I actually do use the pool here pretty often and have been more concerned lately. I do get water in my mouth each time. I'm actively swimming, not just wading. The pool is not that large. Does chlorine or whatever they treat the water with kill off bacteria and ehstever else from piss and body fluids? I don't think the water is ever changed, just treated. I'm pretty sure the kids are probably pissing in the water. Not sure about the adults.

Confused about my visa options!

They are not that smart here to figure that out or care. Applies to other areas as well, not just banks.
