Unfortunately Europe (and Canada. etc.) just hoped for the best (that Trump would lose or if not, not be as explicitly pro Putin as he has become). So Europe though largely with good intentions lacks the preparation, budget, or unified leadership to instantly step up to what's needed. Yes, that's divorce from the USA because the USA is now with the autocratic world. So because they are unprepared they will probably cling to a false hope that they can still benefit from even a very weak alliance with the U.S. Pretty scary times for sure.
