OK, I'm now an older gentleman but if I was a young American I would seriously be looking into expatriating to a nation with a sane government to build my future. The USA is now a quicksand country. Trump announced massive new tariffs globally with Thailand and Vietnam used in the sneaker example being among the hardest hit. To wit -- Tariffs have nothing to do with trade imbalances Tariffs are not paid by the tariffed nation. Instead they are paid by the importer who then needs to pass on that extra cost to consumers. (In effect a TAX on consumers.) So back to the sneaker example. When the new Trump Tax Tariffs hit Vietnam sneakers imported into the US will need to cost more to cover that new large cost factor. US consumers pay that. The same sneakers imported to Thailand from Vietnam are of course not subject to Trump Tax Tariffs. So an American expat in Thailand in effect gets a "tax break" compared to US based consumers on the purchase of the same sneakers. Obviously there are many complex cost factors that go into retail sales, but the sneaker example is used here to focus on the Trump Tax Tariff factor alone.

Your post is insane. Obviously when the Trump Tax tariffs come into effect against Vietnam sneakers imported to the US are going to need to cost much more to absorb the tariff. Another thought. Assuming the biggest market for Vietnamese made sneakers is the US obviously many will refuse to buy them with new Trump Tax prices. So considering normal supply and demand pressures wouldn't that mean that those sneakers in Thailand should likely go down in price?

We all know the 36 percent has nothing to do with Thailand's actual current tariff policy on U.S. imports. That is actually based on trade imbalances -- nothing at all to do with tariffs. That said, can someone post a credible report on the AVERAGE of the ACTUAL Thai tariff rate on U.S. goods? It would be useful to know the reality to compare that number to the number based on Trump regime lies. Not the tariffs on a particular industry type such as wine, but the weighted average of ALL U.S. imports to Thailand. Trump and maga cult members may not care about facts, but the rest of us really should.

So as we know Trump has now isolated the USA from the entire world (except for Russia, NK, etc.) with his totally insane massive tax hike on all but wealthy Americans. He's killed globalism from a U.S. perspective. HOWEVER, trade will go on as before between all other countries. So lets take an example. Sneakers made in Vietnam now much more expensive for Americans living in the U.S. That's the tax hike Trump in his infinite idiocy has mandated. But will they be more expensive for American expats elsewhere? Correct me if I'm wrong, but it doesn't seem so. Also traveling Americans will be able to stock up on cheaper goods when they travel, but then they would have to deal with possible customs penalties on reentry. So why am I posting this exactly? This new reality has me wondering -- will the Trump regime realize that expats are outside his massive tax hike bubble and in response craft a financial penalty targeted at expats? I know some will say that's paranoid, but nobody can confidently say that the Trump regime is not capable of such a thing.

If Trump had announced a still aggressive tariff policy based on ACTUAL FACTS about tariff rates from other countries, done in a rational, precisely targeted reasoned manner in which the reasons were clearly explained and justified, while it still would have been stupid and damaging, it would have been minor compared to what he's actually done. Damage to the American brand that will last for generations. Total idiocy and anyone who supports what Trump has actually done which was totally based on LIES at the very least deserves no respect from decent Americans.

Trump's tariff formula which he les to the American people as being based on tariff rates which it is not is indeed totally insane and basically a massive tax increase on non-billionaire Americans. The number Trump came up has nothing to do with Thailand's tariff rates. It's a fornula based on trade imbalance only. Not the same thing at all. Normally countries that use tariffs in sane ways vs. Trump's all out trade world with the world (except for Russia, North Korea, etc,) target the targets to very specific industries, not overall tariff rates for everything.
