Perhaps this is the war now, boiled down to simplify. Russia makes small land gains costing them a horrific number of meat grinder lives, but Putin doesn't care about human lives, Russian or otherwise, especially the types that are dying in Ukraine. VS. Ukraine more rapidly destroying Russia's energy infrastructure which the intention of starving off import money that funds Putin's war of choice. If that is effective enough and quick enough relative to Russia's small land gains, eventually something has got to give in Russia that ruins their war effort. So then presumably at least Russia goes into actual peace talks and finally abandons their maximalist goals. I don't know which side will prevail. I also don't think that Ukraine will likely achieve maximalist goals. But I think they do have a fighting chance of achieving an acceptable endgame and a real shot at a future sovereign Ukraine existing and eventually thriving.
