Is there anything good about getting old?
parallelman replied to OneMoreFarang's topic in ASEAN NOW Community Pub
Like most of one's life, it depends your health. If one's health is good in old age then it's a pleasure doing those thing you never had time for. Thailand is just right, if you have a little spare money, good health and someone who cares (friends) then I think thats the 'paradise' we'd all like to have. -
I do neck rotation during my morning workout but I know my limits. I have never had a Thai massage but like you, if I did, neck and head would be out of bounds. The Atlas and Axis are the head/spine connection and have a fair range of movement but lower than that the spine vertebra become more restricted and a lot care is required if there are problems in those areas.

Stray Dogs Attack Tourists Daily on Koh Muk
parallelman replied to webfact's topic in Southern Thailand News
for the last week or so both day and night the dogs have yapping away on the private land adjacent to my bedroom at the rear. One particular dog has a distinctive 'rap rap rap' and belongs to the owner who lives on the land. I counted seven dogs one afternoon and I didn't see the owner once. Probably several pups will now be born to increase the number of strays. The lane in which I live has seen many attacks on children and motorbike riders by these dogs which still roam day and night. Officials must know because of the children having to spend time in hospital yet nothing has been done. -
Warning Signs: The Looming Collapse of a Critical Ocean System
parallelman replied to Social Media's topic in World News
And it took 50 years for that to be noticed? Proves my point. Secondly, that article (from 2019) quotes 'Today, the models are much more sophisticated. Mainframe computers driven by paper punch cards have given way to supercomputers running trillions of calculations in 1 second.' A single supercomputer cannot run at trillions of calulations per second...one source, Greenly had this to say (Feb. 2024)...'Looking to the future, the European Union has recently approved plans to develop two new supercomputing infrastructures which will be used in part for climate modeling. The first supercomputer is being installed in Germany and is known as JUPITER. Once the supercomputer is up and running it will be the most powerful computer in Europe, and the first to achieve exascale performance (ie. the capability to carry out over one billion calculations per second!)' which is a thousand times less than a trillion. -
Warning Signs: The Looming Collapse of a Critical Ocean System
parallelman replied to Social Media's topic in World News
Firstly, the 'outdated' MIT grid was never meant to be advanced only to show the very simplest of what a simulation takes into account. You would have noticed that if you had interpreted my comment correctly. You call it 'today's advance climate science' but it is not advanced and that's the point. It is yet in its infancy and we maybe able to call it advanced when later discoveries are made where the maths fits the data within narrow error margins. Take for example aerosol emission where scientists are still trying fix the lack of data. And another point from 2023 was the sudden jump in temperatures which went beyond rate increase predictions. Scientists 2023/2024 are just beginning to introduce AI to help solve some of the problems. So we have along way to go before we can say our climate science is advanced. If it were that advanced then there would only be one interpretation of results but at present, that is not the case -
Warning Signs: The Looming Collapse of a Critical Ocean System

Anyone that thinks that that climate change is by now an exact science is wrong and here I'm referring to just natural climate. All climate Models (and there are a few) revolve around solving PDE's (Navier-Stokes for example) for quite a few variables. Only in very simple states can the PDE's be sovolved analytically but for the climate they have to be numerically approximated. Then there is the problem differentiating land and sea effects and further differentiatin terrain, mountains, forests, hills, valleys and planes which all react differently and affect each other. Not to mention various forces that also need to be accounted for. Now add to that Global Warming (human/animal influence on climate) concrete buildings and roads, how close or far they apart, big small and so on and on. The enclosed picture is from a MIT lecture, 2008, describing a simple 1 year computer model simulation. Each square is divided further into 'grid-cells' and some basic equations applied. It apparently took about 1.5 trillion calculations. More complete simulations require a great deal more computing power...and where does that come from? Some people argue that we have better technology now but what they don't relaise is that the information we are collecting now will not impact predictions until several years time. Yes, there is a general upward trend but the reality could be worse or not so bad depending how the approximations are viewed. -
Warning Signs: The Looming Collapse of a Critical Ocean System

Whatever is told to the nations about stop this practice, stop doing that etc. etc. just isn't going to work. There are nations that will continue along their present course and IMO it is already too late, we've reached a point of no return. However, just how much will 'mother Earth' adjust as the weather/climate patterns change might not be as much as some predict or as some think, it will be worse than current predictions. It will probably be the next generation or two that will either have to adjust or ....In other words, I don't think there is a solution that would be acceptable or affordable. I wonder what would happen to the climate if all flights were grounded, no car usage and no grid to supply electric, for one week? -
I learned about AT's ideas/experiments later and cracking the Enigma code was just one, another was considering AI and overseeing Britains first computer manufacture in the Midlands. Lovelace and Babbage really put an 'engine' on to what counting devices were around at the time. I don't see modern technology as having 'monsters' but having a 'dark side' as one of the consequences of its use (LASER is a good example). I would expect PE Trump to be no different to other Head of State being interested in what modern tech can do.
-
I'm not saying I like the idea nor perhaps does PE Trump but no doubt he wants to keep an eye on what is going on to avoid surprises. No doubt the IT crowd feel the same same about him...hence I used the word 'need'. A 'world communication' system was almost inevitbale because such ideas were around in the 1930/1940's. Information Theory, IT, was born when Claud Shanon, Alan Turing and others were busy laying the groundwork for what we have today. I too grew up in an era where there wasn't an internet & social media and although I knew nothing of Alan Turing's work I did know a little about C. Shanon etc...and studiying Astronomy at the time it wasn't hard to extrapolate and guess what was coming.
-
I don't know about the 'Morning Joe' program but I am not surprised about High Tech and Platforms thereof. My guess is that PE Trump acknowledges that we live in a High Tech/Social Media age and if he intends for the US to be more self-sufficient then he will need them just as much as they will need him, to maintain that.

Consumer injured by glass in spaghetti at Thai pizza chain
parallelman replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
I don't visit Malls much and rarely eat at/from Pizza Chains. However, that doesn't stop 'unwanted particles' being in Thai food that I eat and most are small sharp bone splinters mixed in the rice. But glass in food is a serious event and in this case I can only imagine that somewhere along the line some of the ingredients were mixed in a glass container which splintered or broke. -
Sounds like you have Allergic Bronchitis inflamation caused by some pollutant(s). If it worse in town then it could be increase in dust and fumes. Several Bronchodialator treaments are available, including certain steroids and some inhalers although the latter may only give temprary relief.

Marrying a Thai Wife: Overrated or Underrated?
parallelman replied to SoCal1990's topic in ASEAN NOW Community Pub
Well if you '...marry a Thai wife...' aren't you off to bad start anyway? I mean why marry someoneone who is already '...a wife...'? 😆 -
Obviously Thaksin doesn't like the idea that a major independent institution being able to disclose the truth about the economy of Thailand...just as he doesn't want the truth to come out about his 'hospitalisation'. What surprises me is the comspicuious silence of Army related MP's telling Thaksin to 'shut up'...or do they want him to be the cause of another coup?

House Panel Lacks Authority to Summon Thaksin for Inquiry
parallelman replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
Like the bit about '...duplication of effort...'. Since when have Thai Gov. depts. been worried about duplication? Next step, House Comm. orders x number of brown envelopes. If all those other depts have been/are investigating the same where are their conclusions. I mean, how long does it take to view a persons hospitalisation file? -
Imo, if V.P. extends the war elslewhere he will only do so by using tactical nukes. He thought he would take Ukrane in a very short time but his conventional weapons have not been successful in doing that. So he must realise that making strikes anywhere else with the same type of weopons will also be unsuccessful (in terms of winning 'the day' as it were). That leaves him with only the nuke option. But even then he must realise that if doesn't kill (all) his opposition in a first strike Russia will suffer from nuclear strikes too.

The Exodus of Left-Wing Voices: Where Will They Bleat Now?
parallelman replied to Social Media's topic in World News
I must say that I really don't see what all the fuss is about. (I don't have an 'X' or Facebook account.) Things change from time to time, swings one way and then another. All it means is tha 'X' is now turning to the Right of politics where before it was to the Left. I am sure that the Guardian won't lose out and will adjust to keep its followers/readers. -
How long can you stand on 1 leg reflects your age
parallelman replied to 3NUMBAS's topic in Health and Medicine
Standing on one leg is simple for most elderly folk. The important exercise is standing on one leg, the other rasied to waist level (90o angle) or higher and perforing various arm exercises (to the sides, raised etc.) for 10-15 secs each leg. Not a good idea to go beyond 20 secs as this can put excessive pressure on the standing knee -
Anyone else struggling with loud sleep farts?
parallelman replied to 123Stodg's topic in ASEAN NOW Community Pub
'Where ever you may be let the wind go free....' supposed to be on a gravestone or two I understand. A few days of the white menthol mixture (ยาธาตุน้ำขาว) might be worth a try. It transforms flatulence into mild burps.
