Enforced is the key word! In 8 years living here and driving, I've never ever once come across an alcohol check point. Likewise speeding camera. Helmets, safety belts and drug check points yes, but the two biggest causes of road accidents? Never.
..I've been here 8 years too and driven on many highways through many provinces and seen plenty of radar traps, speed cameras, alcohol check-points..depends if you're there when they're there!!
Radar traps in LOS?! Yikes! THought LOS was a walk in the park for high speed touring. Where do they provide this 'public service', motorways, highways or city roads, and are they in cars/trucks or just standing by the road holding a radar gun? Need to keep a look-out... not advocating unsafe driving, but the posted limits can be daft.
Hi bbradsby,
I was stopped after going through a radar trap, on route 2 by-passing Korat. Cost me I think 300 or 400bt and got a reciept for it, so was official. Ok though just get in the queue pay the fine, no mark on your licence.
There was another time which was classic. Going to Udon, again on route 2. I was stopped by a cop waiting by the side of the road on a motor bike. He took 100bt from me. Told my girl friend that I should drive slow for the next 1/2 kilometer. Sure enough on the 1/2kil mark, there they were with speed trap??

Just as there is a list of occupations non-Thais cannot hold, perhaps there should be a list that Thais cannot hold, without help from a Farang.
Let's start with translating news stories into English. This one is an obvious example, but what about all the other ones that "almost" got it right?
Really, as it stands it is pointless reading any of this stuff and Thai Visa is doing a disservice posting any of it in its raw form.
I agree with you there 100%

This thread's getting silly. Maybe Thai teens should learn Romeo and Juliet, then Macbeth, Othello, and Hamlet. Oh wait, we want to reduce violence right? Catch y'all later on some other post.
Or maybe an history of the early Popes of Rome & the inquisition?

Rival Shools? shows how well the students are educated in this country.
IDIOTS
Westside Story? aka (Romeo & Juliet) Teenagers.

The continue fighting and killing among rival students is a perfect mirror of the today's Thailand
I don't know where you are from anguid. But you only have to look at London. The amount of children as young as 12/13 being stabbed to death on a frighteningly regular basis. I'm afraid that it is a world wide problem, that the powers to be seem to ignore.

When I lived in one of the villages. I have seen food left under plastic, insect guard, for days and still not thrown away or given to dogs or chickens. It was eventually eaten.

If a tree falls in the forest and you do not hear it or see it fall, how do you know if it fell?
Because you just told us?
Because it's laying down silly
Now what was the question

It will be interesting to see who police's this one, on the local markets.

Are they also going to do anything about the rest of the dangerous transport on the roads, public buses death traps, trucks death traps, also spewing out clouds of toxic fumes. Motor bikes that shouldn't be on the roads, how many times do you swerve to miss them at night, coming straight at you with no lights.
Now if they were to have a CRACK DOWN on all of these, the roads would be safe. As there would be very few using them.
That would then create another problem. Where would the BIB turn for their tea money

Same same. Only different day different location. Very sad R.I.P

By the way one comment did strike me as something worth getting some more information on - from those that know!
Where does Bangkok's rubbish go?
Nana and Soy Cowboy.

Where does Bangkok's rubbish go?
I don't know where it is, but I did see a programe on telly, where people (I think Burmeese) were sifting through the rubbish, mainly for scraps of food as the Thais had already taken the glass and plastic, for recycling. But that was only one tip. Maybe they do the same as the USA take it down the river in barges, I hope to disposal plants?

My memories not what it was. But I seem to remember reading on T/V somewhere last year, that Thai Air was looking to cancel an order for a load of the new air buses that they had ordered. May have been that runway's were not long enough. As I said memory not what it was?

I don't think too much they have referenced in this article are unique to Thailand in terms of Thailand's current stage of being a developing nation. Most industrialized nations went through a stage where visibly polluting air and rivers as well as having little concern for natural resources were just part of the growth process. The point is that is should not be acceptable but it is by no means unique to Thailand or what western civilizations went through during their developing stages though Thailand likely has a much denser population given its emergence to this stage later in history.
Very true Nisa. In the early 1960s the UK began a massive clean up with it's keep Britain tidy campaign, using mass advertising and bringing in strict laws on dropping litter which were adhered to by the police. Sadly my last statement is where Thailand fails. The police here would only see it as another means of lining their own pockets
Also a group of people, all volunteers got together, in their own time to clean up the Great Union Canal, which had been turned into a cess pit and restored it very much to it's original glory?

Only Bt10m's worth? They must have had their eyes closed.

The men responsible for attacking Ms Maiwadee will be prosecuted, V/Gov Weerawat said.
Like hell they will.
It appears these thugs have a free hand otherwise they would all be in jail awaiting trial right now.
The police are not really interested because the victim is not a person of wealth and considered of little significance. The police stand to gain nothing by enforcing the law for this poor kid and as usual they would prefer that this matter is forgotten and if left alone it will go away.
Who says that there will be no follow-ups to this story in the media? Place your bets here please.
Yes plus another one for the pot officer

I think for most Thais, getting out of bed in the morning, is the meaning of work?

They might as well raise the age to 60 for all the difference it will make.
The same as anywhere in the world. If people want to smoke they will find a way.

Amnuay said settlement between the girl's family and relatives of those killed and injured would likely be reached in the future.
That's what I said before ... Money will resolve everything and charges will be dropped ... Want to bet ?
Sorry if I gamble, I prefer the odds in my favor.
She said sorry it was an accident! It was not. It was mass manslaughter. She did not have a licence, she is not old enough to hold a licence. She had no right to be driving that car. So she should not have been where she was at that time, to cause that slaughter.
But as said it would seem that the families are gearing up for the big pay day. Next please?

Actually, for as much as lying seems to be a part of Thai culture they are remarkably bad at it. Part of that is that they don't expect to ever have their lies questioned so they put very little effort into making them believable. I mean, back home when you want to tell a lie as simple as why you were late this morning you go through all sorts of different scenarios in your head. You work out possible rebuttals and your responses. You make sure that your lie is plausible. Etc, etc, etc. Thais just seem to say the first thing that pops into their heads.
Examples:
Farang Lie:
Boss: Why were you late?
Employee: Oh, it was crazy. I was coming down Sukhumvit, you know near Soi 10, right near the park? Anyway, a cop stops me and asks me to empty my pockets. I tell him no way. So he threatens to take me down to the police station and . . . well, long story short, I have to go to the ATM to pull out some money to make the problem go away. See, I have the ATM receipt right here. I had to give him 1000 baht.
Thai Lie:
Boss: Why were you late?
Employee: Oh traffic, mak, mak.
Boss: You just told me yesterday that you take the BTS to work
Employee: Blank stare.
I was always told, that to be a good liar, you must also have a very good memorary.

Ok I get the bit on excluding taxis, motor cycles etc. So it means, you stop off have a couple of drinks with a friend on your way home Hop on the BTS you can get busted? Driving private transport. Same as makes no difference? Sorry if I have got this wrong but I really could not be bothered to go back to the begining and read it again in English.
