To those who assume that anyone from Issan is "low class" or a bar wench, you are very wrong. Issan comprises 1/3 the population of Thailand.

Issan people form the backbone of the service industry, the trades and the military. Considering that almost all of us will at some point require the services of these "low class" people, speaking some Issan dialect, even a few words, would serve one well. Many of my Thai friends are from Issan. They are not bar girls and have never been to Phuket or Pattaya, nor wish to have anything to do with those that go there. One of them is the guy that will most likely be sent in to defuse the bomb someone plants. (I reckon most of you didn't know that most of the bomb disposal personnel come from Issan.) You bet I want to be able to speak a few words to them. Next time there is a civil insurrection and you want to navigate through the army people, drop a few Issan words and you will get some help as most conscripts are Issan people. Those Issan people form the majority of the NCOs and junior officer corps as well.

Appreciably if one makes his home in the south, one of the southern dialects is appropriate. However, if one is living in Bangkok or in the north, Issan dialect comes in handy.

Make an exception for Phuket. Most of the kids here can't even speak Southern Thai, let along the unique Phuket dialect, despite the many years when Phuket was a true island, without a bridge to the mainland.

It saddens me that so many of new arrivals, especially people who come to live and work here, have no interest in Thai language whatsoever, let alone the local version of it.

But at the end of the day the loss is theirs because Thai is such a great and flexible language and the of it.

My experience of trying to learn French in Quebec (after six years of school study in the states) put me off efforts to learn that language completely.

I later found, but much too late, that French people (outside Paris) are pretty cool about people trying to learn their language.

I think that much of the conflict in the Deep South is really about language more than anything else; it's a shame that this issue is never really addressed by so many successive governments and that the unique Patani Malayu is not introduced as an official second language in that part of the country.

The resulting vacuum is a bottomless pit into which far too many lives, too much misery and money have been squandered over the last decade.

if something ,even small, is not working in my rented -out house,they will telephone me the same minute,if i dont repair it quickly ,they will stop paying the rent and go rent somewhere else.

Offcourse if your rent is lower than 10 000 bht,they will not be bothered if you leave,annother thai will come in your place and he will never complain.

I got stuck in a buffet at lunchtime today because of the rain (shame!). Had to take my shoes off to get to my car when it stopped, and then it took forever to drive up Central Road to Sukumvit. Not that there was any reason for the delay; just people driving incredibly slowly and taking about a minute to get in gear when the lights go green, as usual. Sometimes I wonder if they are actually awake behind those one-way mirrors they call windows.

Location ! Location ! Stay away of Pattaya,its crowded,stinking sewerings,stinking beaches (Jomtien included,or are you blind?)You cant drive with a car unless verry verry slow............stay away ! Go live outside of Pattaya ,only go there for shopping early in the morning (Macro open 6 o'clock,Foodland open all night)

Manny restaurants and bars on the "dark side " ,where you can still drive a car . (1 exercise a day ,keeps the dogs away.)

All school bus drivers should have a special license to transport children. Number one to be able to drive and secondly to ensure an IQ above 60.

Dont count on drivers,teachers,etc...... in this country you count on yourself,you bring your children to school yourself and get them back home yourself,all the rest is BS.I would never ,ever trust my children to a thai driver in a school minivan nor anny taxi driver,or your IQ is also under 10.

No car is no excuse,take your motorbike or your bicycle or walk .No school nearby? Rent (because you prob.not own) nearby a good school.

Only 1 remedy, as soon as a minivan-or taxi driver starts speeding or idiotic driving ,ask him to stop because you feel sick ,repead the word "ouak"many times,he will not risk someone vommits in his van and he will stop. Leave the car and possible everybody must leave and let the driver do what he wants ,start telefoning his company and demand a proper driver ,or phone any other taxi company and tell them what happened.

If the driver looses his passengers 2 times ,his boss will probably sack him .

Best of all ,stay out of busses ,taxi's or vans . If you dont have the money to posses a car ,rent one ,your live is more important than a few thousant baht?

The quick fix is to negotiate and give them autonomy, the thai did steal the place just as they stole huge swaythes of cambodia.

Battambang and siem riep were only given back post ww2 as war reparations.
