You have enough time to get your new passport here in Thailand and visit immigration to get all this sorted before you leave. Why wait and complicate things. I believe it used to be the case you had to get a letter from the Embassy about the passport change. In my case my old passport, not Norwegian, was stamped by the issuer of the new passport here in Thailand stating that it has been superseded by the new passport #xxx1234 and that the old passport maybe used for the purpose of presenting any valid visa so that it maybe continued. I took both passports to local Imm and they stamped the new one that I had entered Thailand on the old passport and two "copy" stamps duplicating my last two entries to Thailand on the old passport. Maybe this happens all the time at the airport and the busy Imm officers know exactly what to do. I'm sure it will take time much to the chagrin of the people behind you in the queue.

In Canada at the supermarket check out; if you paid by card they would ask do you need any cash? I didn't experience that in the US. In UK I experience getting cash at an ATM with no interest or other charges.
