  1. There seems to be a lot of negativity against looking after the Thai in-laws on here.

I for one think it is perfectably reasonable to help them out now and again due to the lack of social welfare in Thailand.

OAP's only get 500bhat a month from Thaksins goverment policy.

So the old rely on the young not like in the west where they are put in retirement homes and lose their assets to the goverment with inheritance tax etc.

The Thai way of doing things is more family orientated.

How would you want to spend your later years? - being cared for by your family and your assets going where they are rightfully intended.

or letting strangers care for your elderly and infirm relatives.

My Thai wife has already said on many occasions that she finds the wests way of caring for elder members of the family terrible.

With this in mind and i don't mean financing the whole village what do you think?

When I got married, I paid 100k sinsod which was going to be given back to me. It wasn't so I decided then that as they cheated me, I'd not give them a monthly "allowance". They asked for money for fishfarms and other business ventures. Everytime, I'd say sure, I'll give you 30,000 after you write out the repayment plan and show me your 1 year projected profit and other business plans. Well, guess what, they never did. Of course, we are family and we have helped out in emergencies - just last year we got the father-in-law out of jail for killing someone(his brother) whilst driving drunk. Cost me more than money - one of my get-out-of-jail-free cards.

If my brother and sister-in-law contribute to their parents, then I will too. If they don't, then guess what? So, I feel myself lucky that they ripped me off at the start. If I had agreed to pay them a monthly "wage" 12 years ago then I'd be most probably pissed off now and posting about it on internet forums to get "likes" by other mugs to make me feel that I wasn't a mug.

Like most FILs of foreigners here, mine is an alcoholic which is one reason my wife was attracted to me, but that's another story. I see many many co-dependant relationships here. I see many many people-pleasing "farang" giving ridiculous amounts of cash to their inlaws. One guy was telling me recently how his wife's uncle in Nakhon Nowhere was so kind and helpful looking after his wife's kids. All he gives is 1o,000 baht a month plus clothes etc for the kids! He seemed confused when I told him the cost of raising kids in an Isaan village and said , " but Jimmy in the same village gives 12,000 baht to the parents and my wife would lose face if I didn't give that much". Who gives a flying **** if his wife loses face - she used to be a Pattaya BG, how much more face can she actually lose? The truth is that she's ripping off her own husband and up here there's a lot of embarrassment for these girls if they don't manage to milk the foreigner. He doesn't even understand why his wife doesn't want him to learn Thai!!!!!!!!! My wife's not from Isarn but even from her part of the country it's similar.

The Thai way of doing things is for the family to help out but do you think this is really good? Why do you think government hospitals are so bad? They family goes in there, camps out and basically takes care of their family member who is the patient. The nurses now realise that they don't have to look after the patient.

Wouldn't it be better for the Thais to start a revolution against the poor welfare payments for the elderly in order to get more or to say, never mind, we are Thai and we look after our old? When I am old, however, it would be nice if my kids looked after me a bit but I'm going to make sure that if they don't I'll be ok.

My wife used to say the same about Western ways of looking after the old when she first went to Scotland and met my grandmother in sheltered housing, not even in the same city as her kids. However, now seeing her in a nursing home, she says it's wonderful the way she is looked after, being with other codgers, getting her daily dram, having singing parties etc. She's 99 and my parents or I don't have to pay a penny to help.

Helping out family is fine but make sure you're not being taken as a mug.

My wife's two ''hi-so'' sisters give nothing to their old mum. sad.png Mum sold everything to put these sisters through Uni. bah.gif
  2. And the reactors for the UK nuclear submarine fleet and gas turbines for the Royal Navy and other marine uses. We also build trains that are exported worldwide.

Oh yes, those submarines the UK unloaded on Canada were so well built.

Canada bought old ''Warn Out'' stuff that their engineers passed. rolleyes.gif

  4. If the Thai motor factory work force were paid similar wages to the west, see what happens.

Remove the daft import tax on car imports to LOS, see what happens.

Ooooop's. Doe's Thailand actually design and build their own mark. Hmmmmmm, no, put together others cos a very poorly paid workforce.

Mr. Fumihiko Ike, President & Chief Executive Officer, Asian Honda Motor Co., Ltd. said, “Based on our strong, long-term commitment to the development of Thailand’s automotive industry, Honda has established a new regional automobile R&D center here in Thailand. The center’s function covers broad research and development activities including product planning, product design research and testing. The new automobile R&D facility will enable Honda to respond even more quickly to changing customer needs in the Asia-Oceania region.”

And the salaries paid to these folk are Whoooooooooopy in LOS.

OK I'll bite. Because they are paid less money in Thailand than the UK they are worth less?

You miss my point, pure economics, how much do the thousands of Thai assembly workers earn a week,? how much does a UK assembly worker earn, probably 10 fold.

  7. No virus scanner....just being carefully is good enough.

Dunno mate, I bet you 100b that if you ran ?? lets say Spybot4 (easy install, free and quick ) you would find at least 10 problems if not more.

    Spybot4 isn't a virus scanner....

I don't install dogy software from the internet, I don't use IE. I don't go to these pages with nude women, I don't do internet gambling, I don't plug in USB sticks which were used on other computer.

You being a totally ''upright'' sort of chap is nooooooo protection if you are connected to the WWW. I would up the bet that you have stuff lurking in your PC.
  8. The UK police aren't perfect and have been heavily criticised for institutional racism in recent years following the Stephen Lawrence murder, and are coming in for a slating now that J.Savile's alleged offences are coming out, BUT I maintain the vast majority of them are decent public servants and should be protected from this type of crass and inhumane behaviour.

My personal experiences with the UK police force demonstrated to me that the vast majority appeared to be corrupt. Good to hear your personal experiences were the opposite to mine.

So you were a choir boy and the UK BiB stitched you up eh. cheesy.gif
  9. So hate speech is illegal in the UK? How do Religious leaders then get away with calling for the death of people of another religion, of the destruction of that religions country. How can they say that the leaders of the country they are living in should be killed also and the people living there should be converted or become 2nd class citizens with special taxes placed on them. How can the call for the deaths of citizens of other counytries not under the sway of their religion. Sounds pretty hateful to. Yet this moron wears a shirt and gets 4 months in the jail for a hate crime. Pretty selective usage of the law

He has other stuff backed up. rolleyes.gif
  10. I'm happy to help companies that provide good service understand their clientèle better, and if that means they tailor their services to my needs, all the better.

You can PM me your on-line bank details if you like. I will tailor your needs to a baht and mine too. thumbsup.gif .................................laugh.png
  11. If you consider computer security like layers of an Onion, use 1 Anti-virus, 1 Malware, 1 Spyware. Run anti-virus continuously, the malware and spyware can be run intermittently, especially if you have a weak computer. As long as they don't overlap too much, you're covered. Don't run more than 1 Anti-virus, just sucks up too much resources.

Those daily antivirus scans can suck up huge amounts of disk i/o, so schedule them when the computer is on, but you're not. Since prices are dropping rapidly, consider an SSD for your root drive.

    use ...

    1 Anti-virus ... AVG

    1 Malware ... Malaware Bytes

1 Spyware ... suggestions, as I don't have one installed and happy with the two above.

... and what is a 'SSD for your root drive' ... ?

    Thanks

SSD is Solid State Drive or Flash memory. There are no moving parts like a SATA drive so it's much faster at accessing information.

Suggestions for a good spyware please ...

  13. Fair justice, if some police officer had grabbed him pushed him down some alley and kick 7 bells out the scum bag, the police officer would have lost his job, probably ended up in court and even prison, the police would have lost a good officer who was well trained at considerable expense to tax payers.

What this is about is a S#!t who ambushed two unarmed women police officers with a hand grenade and executed them in cold blood, and that scum bag tried to glorify him.

    In a nut shell.

Sure there are many here that would willingly ''educate'' the guy in the error of his ways. thumbsup.gif

  14. Utter dick....but 4 months for a moronic tshirt. Makes the UK look like Putin's Russia.

Often the best way to deal with brain-dead gits is to let them make fools of themselves , a skill they often excel at.

Nah, he'll only do a couple of months - I would say thats just about right in the circumstances - he isn't a kid and doesn't have mental issues.

    I beg to differ.

Yes, certainly not a child, but....

I think someone who does this has mental problems

Not the behaviour of any "normal" mind

do you think his previous conviction has any bearing on this later behaviour ?

If he was naughty before and warned if he is naughty again then he will have three square meals a day, then so be it. Remember, IF, he made a racial comment then he would be in trouble again.

ME, would like to beat the shit out of him cos the guy is the lowest form of DNA of our country.

OK, OK, every country has it's lowlife, BUT, draw a line. The line WAS drawn in this case.

  15. Thai doctors outside of surgery are not anywhere close to the bottom 10% of doctors from western countries. That's just like thinking a burmese laborer can give good advices to a contractor of 50 years for luxury projects in the west.

Almost every thai doctors i have dealt with had very little knowledge without looking through a bunch of books or FAQ lists. Those that did were spewing nonsense. Only met a few good ones in bangkok but they werent educated in thailand.

better go and see one of them ASAP.... it seems your bilious attack isn't clearing up. coffee1.gif

Sorry, but l must agree with BJ.
  16. This 'jerk' shouldn't be able to hide behind laws made for decent people. It is good that some of his previous misdeeds could be used to 'try' to teach him a lesson. I still doubt that he will learn.

How insensitive of him when so many decent people were grieving - Rightfully deserves more punishment than he got.

Four months in jail for being 'insensitive' seems a little harsh to me.

I didn't realise not being a decent person (or being a jerk) was a jail-able offense.

Glad I don't live in the UK, dreading going back for a week.

Perhaps you have missed the point. sad.png
