  1. Crackers / party poppers @ Makro.

Ta for the info - never seen crackers here before. But Bug*er me - have you seen the prices now in the UK?

I've been away from the old country for 14 years and when I was buying crackers last they were 3-4 quid a box and 7 or 8 for the really nice ones.

Looking through for that shot of the crackers I see they're selling for 25-30 quid for a box of 6! Fancy ones anyway.

Strewth Brian! I'm gland I live over here in the land of the free (ish).

    R

    25 - 30 quid !, where are you shopping rob, harrods !

i just bought 8 for 2.50 !, little bit more up market 9.99 ... even old M and S are doing 6 of the best for 12.99 ..........

good news for UK, there is a booze war on, any 10 cans of 500ml beer, carlsberg/stella/fosters, 300 THB !, also any litre bottle of spirts, Smirnoff ect 440 THB !, its going to get cheaper next week

maybe the UK can do a trade with Thailand, we send you cheap booze in return for Gas and Smokes ;)

2.50 - well that sounds more like it Boaty. Naaa - I went to Googly some cracker pics for the Mason-Dixon line and everything I seemed to look at was attached to a shop catalogue and was upwards of 15 quid. What do I know about England in very nearly 2012!

Take a hoof around and see!

  2. Bangkok airways. Over priced. aircrafts are under maintainec. Planes that are about 70 years old still being driven litturely into the ground for the highest fair possible.

How they can charge those prices for very old prepellor planes is un believable in the commsercial business.

I suppose they need to charge allot of money just to keep those antque planes maintained rarther than just scrapping them for air buses

agree , i never fly the prop planes, wasnt the last crash in samui a prop plane? as with the one yesterday ?

they are budget aircrafts !, with the price BKK charge, they should be flying A380 's into samui !, ( with n extenable runway of course )

  3. I never rode a bike when I lived in Bangrak. It was really inconvenient at times to walk everywhere, or wait, and wait for a songthaew or motorbike taxi. But my list of reasons was for not driving was pretty good, I thought;

    * I had never ridden a bike before.

    * I have arthritis in my hands and wouldn't be able to grip the handles tight when an emergency came up.4

    * The bad conditions of the roads.

    * The other drivers - whether just plain bad or just plain drunk.

    * I've never driven on the left side of the road before. When I do, I don't want it to be on a tiny motorbike with a speeding cement truck coming the other way.

    * Finally, most of the time when I was going someplace I was going to drink. Usually too much.

Add all of those together and I would have been a fool to ride. I've already decided that when I return for my next visit I'm renting a car or truck for when I'm not planning to drink.

I bet most of the expat traffic accidents on Samui are alcohol-related (them or the other person). I'm sure all of us who go out drinking at night have seen people who can barely walk get on a motorbike a drive off. It might not be a bad idea for someone to organize a designated driver service. Multiple pool leagues and social clubs are evidence that the organizational skills are there. How hard would it be, in Bangrak for example, to have a guy each night who was on call hanging out at Premier or M&Ms or wherever until closing time? Or my last trip there we were so drunk we got the driver from the hotel across the street to give us a ride. I have no idea what that cost though and a lot of drunks would probably pass on that.

high cost taxis are add to the problem. If they were bangkok prices people would not need to rent motor bikes. Then again. motor bike renters won't be happy not that there is much money to be made on renting a motor bike out for 200 baht a day when u add up all the expeneses.

i think high taxi costs and no law inforcement is a key factor

no one drives when drunk in the UK, as they face a Driving Ban, massive fine and possible prison ( and if you kill / injure someone while drink driving, that is 5 years !!! ) , so the thought to do is out the window, plus most taxi firms charge 150 THB ( 3 Pounds ) for a txi here upto about 5 kms !, so if you judge the cost here against thailand that should be 50 THB ( which happens in BKK !! )

although it would never happen, if a mini cab company started on samui ( chaweng / Lamai ) charging say a flat fee of 150 THB, there would be loads of profit in the business, plus people would use the service, but 500 THB from green mango to nr tesco is taking the piss,

samui really needs to address the issue, and before posters say , if you dont like it go back to the UK, wait untill you have friends killed , then you will change your tune

  4. THE Home Secretary has launched a bid to stop a Birmingham murder suspect appealing against his extradition to Thailand.

Kickboxer Lee Aldhouse, from Yardley, is wanted to stand trial over the death of former US Marine Deshawn Longfellow following a bar room brawl in Phuket in August last year.

The 27-year-old wants to appeal his extradition on the grounds that conditions in Thailand’s notorious jails would violate his human rights.

But, in a case described as “Kafkaesque” by a judge, Home Secretary Theresa May is trying to stop him challenging the decision.

She claims the Home Office was not correctly notified of his appeal against the Thai government’s extradition request.

  5. I am not sure where I read it, but it was my understanding that in Thailand, they only count it as 'death in a road accident' if the poor person dies at the roadside.

If the victim is alive after the accident, but later succumbs to their injuries. this is not classed as a traffic statistic.

This would mean that the real figures of road deaths are much higher.

(This could be an urban legend though!)

I was always told that on Samui there are 2 - 3 a deaths week on average, but it is almost impossible to get a real number.:(

    the above is true ........

i think the real number is around 10 deaths per week on samui, maybe more, plus at least 50 accendients, remember not all accendiants are recorded....

  6. Pol. Col. Prakart Pongpanich also revealed that after arrest of the three suspects Mrs. Kingkarn Saengjan or “Palm” contacted Pol. Maj. Pichit Fheunsaen, Rayong police to release all three suspects in exchange for one million THB.

The police agreed and let her transfer 900,000 THB into Pol. Maj. Pichit’s bank account and made an appointment to deliver the balance of 100,000 THB in cash. She was arrested and accused of bribing the officer and the four suspects to be prosecuted according to the law and police will follow up to arrest other members of the drugs network in Rayong province.

i wonder if he kept the money ! :whistling:

  7. Fair enough.

As a general rule, Thailand + property = scam.

you must have been stung in the past Darrel ..

not every property in thailand is a scam !, there are some very good developements and properties out there on the market, it is just the crooks who make a bad image...

i know plenty of very happy people with property here, investors who are making a healthy return, and some millioaires just from buying and selling here...

main thin is Due Dilligence, use a GOOD lawyer, CHECK the company out , and you will be fine !, if they hve built 5 Plus developements already and delievered, then the should be OK,

anyway, if you are looking for secure investments, i now operate from the UK, safest place to invest lol, :jap:

  9. Fasten your seatbelts! A Thai airline that hired transsexuals as flight attendants to set itself apart from competitors has taken to the skies.

PC Air, a new charter airline that plans to fly routes across Asia, originally set out to hire only male and female flight attendants.

But it changed its mind after receiving more than 100 job applications from transvestites and transsexuals.

  10. Whatever you do, don't wait until you're in Kingpower's grubby little claws! They do sell L&M, but at only about 20 Baht less than Tescos. If you have any small wholesale outlets around you (you know, the shops with stacks of Chang, Leo etc. for sale by the case usually to small shops and bars), thenyou should be able to pick up a carton of L&M for about 535 Baht, cheaper than either Tescos or King Power.

Just for the record, the L&M sold here are made in the Philipines under licence.

when did king power start selling L and M ? , they havent been for the past 5 years, unless something has changed in the last month or so

Last went through Swampy about a year ago, and found L&M on sale at several of the smaller Duty Free stalls. Agreed that I've never seen them in the main shops in the middle of the concourse, but there are scores of tiny stalls all around the airport (all owned by King Power who have the monopoly for Duty Free) several of which had L&M.

hmm i have been through there maybe 20 times, main duty and the smaller duty, and never seen , and i have asked, and get the same answer, we dont sell l and m,

  12. The smuggled cocaine had a street value of £93,000

Nolubabalo, 23, was hired as a drug mule for £1,200

Judges in Thailand can impose the death penalty for drug traffickers

A woman was caught trying to smuggle 1.5 kilograms of cocaine in her dreadlocks on a flight to Bangkok, it was reported today.

South African Nobanda Nolubabalo, 23, was arrested and held in Thailand's capital yesterday after customs officers allegedly noticed a suspicious white substance in her hair.

Officials later carried out a search and discovered she had allegedly matted the Class A drug into her dreadlocks before boarding a flight from Brazil

  13. If your around maenam then lazy coconut for sure . on a separate note hire a small car or jeep for you and your friends, not motorbikes. you can't compare riding a motorbike on koh Chang to doing it on samui by the size of the island.

agree there, Lazy Coconut is the only place to be if you are in Maenam ,,,,,,,,,,

Best also to rent a jeep, samui is very dangerous for motorbikes over the xmas season, so many deaths on the roads, you want to be returning home overwight , full off sun and beer, not in a bodybag ... dont think it wont happen to you !, i think 5 a day are killed on the roads in samui over xmas / new year and many many injured

    Better Safe the Sorry

    Enjoy your xmas :jap:

  14. Sorry for not being more specific...

Price does not matter if it comes highly recommended, and as for the food, something traditional and British would be good - Turkey, Brussel Sprouts etc.

Would booking in advance be a good idea for those who've experienced xmas in samui before?

yes book in advance , if you are after traditional British Xmas Dinner ( 12 pints of stella and and some turkey / trimmings ) let the thread know where ons amui you are staying so we can point you in the right direction
