New passaport while in overstay
sometimewoodworker replied to Mika78's topic in Thai Visas, Residency, and Work Permits
There is no requirement to go to immigration, it is a convenience, most people get the information transferred, they are often asked to contribute to the staff tea fund. A Visa is never transferred. If you go to immigration they will make notes regarding your current permission to stay in your new passport, that includes which class of entry was used to get the permission to stay. If you decide not to go to immigration you can exit and enter using both your current and cancelled passports. The entry IO may make you get the data referencing your current permission to stay transferred at the airport (but probably won’t bother) -

It is the way a Thai would say it. Though since it is a transliteration the English spelling of the sound is an approximation, other spellings are available, and other Thai pronunciations are possible. -
Incidentally @sandyf‘s misunderstanding of the difference between a visa and the permission to stay in a country prompted me to look into one of my 27+ Japanese applications to stay in Japan. Although the extension of stay is very commonly referred to as an extension of a visa IT IS NOT and never was, the paperwork for Japan clearly does not refer to an extension of a visa so in that way the regulations are similar to Thailand, though naturally there are rather important differences. I can’t comment on the correct terms on places where I haven’t researched but it is quite likely that this is true for many, if not all, other countries. The reason why it is important for Thailand is that it is the only country I know of where the visa expiration does not also limit your allowed period of stay. It is quite possible that this is unique. This means that it may well be the only country where it is vitally important to differentiate between a visa and a permission to stay. So just because you call something by the wrong name and others may also use the wrong name doesn’t make the name correct.

Backhoe may well be a common American term, it is more accurate than most. Macro is the common Thai Term” it is not the correct technical name A JCB is a company “Joseph Cyril Bamford Excavators Ltd” a British multinational it is not the correct technical name for the machine it has become the common name based on the colour “yellow” of the machine and the ubiquity of the company products. There is no general specific name for the bucket digger known by the names Backhoe, Macro, and JCB though Backhoe has the most claim to be correct. The reason for the name backhoe comes from the fact that it started as the attachment for a tractor unit or purpose built machine called a backhoe loader before becoming an independent machine -
True visions -- new fibre cable??????
sometimewoodworker replied to Patanawet's topic in Audio Visual AV
The thinner cable is easy to explain, it is a fibre cable and what you had before was a coax, the fibre is about 1/10 the thickness. The “wire” is actually a fibre cable. It usually requires a TMU between it and the router but it is possible that the TMU is incorporated into the router. This is what is in a typical TMU with the exterior steel wire supported cable being terminated and an interior cable being spliced on to it then going to the router. -
It is unlikely to be a “duff electronic thingy” electronic thingies generally are either working or not. It is almost certainly that the computer and speakers have different ground planes and you are hearing the effect of them. The cure is to bond the ground planes together (or possibly totally isolate them) this will stop the hum. You may also be able to add an electronic thingy or 2 on the connector which will filter the interference. You can probably buy a filter cheaply however you need an actual electronics capable tech to diagnose. This is often a 2 minute job for someone like that. Conversely you may well be able to get a parts fitter to add bits that may (or may not) work again a quick job but with a rather more random chance of success with a chance of being told it’s impossible (though what is really meant is that they don’t know how to do it) The other option is to use battery powered speakers, they virtually guarantee no hum

Some may, many don’t, many don’t understand the word backhoe. -
You are confusing the visa which is in most cases issued outside Thailand (there are a small number issued in Thailand) with the permission to stay. Once the visa has been used it can never be extended. The permission to stay issued by the immigration officer is influenced by the visa, visa exempt, and nationality status. However you DO NOT have a visa status you have a permission to stay status. Incorrect, a visa is never extended, you can extend your permission to stay, you can in certain cases change the basis for your permission to stay, you can never change a visa. Again wrong. A visa exempt entry is not a visa, it can not be changed into anything. You can (if you do it soon enough and you have the correct documents) be issued a Non-O visa buy Thai immigration that immediately used and you are then issued a permission to stay the status of the permission to stay is based on the used Visa Again you are conflating the visa which allows you to present yourself to immigration with the permission to stay that is granted by the IO and is influenced by your status on entry (usually with a visa or without a visa) Thailand is very unusual in that the visa only governs the entry to the country with the permission to stay governing how long you can stay. In most countries the two run concurrently so are not split. In most countries you must depart before your visa expires. In Thailand you must only enter before your visa expires NOTE my statements are solely referring to Thailand, other countries have different rules and you should never assume that Thailand’s rules are the same TIT not any other country

Switch Electric off at Meter? Possible?

Switch Electric off at Meter? Possible?
sometimewoodworker replied to STD Warehouse's topic in The Electrical Forum
Quite simply it is the result of disconnecting a circuit underload. So turn, off the load, no flash. The higher the load the bigger the arc and related flash. The higher the voltage the bigger the flash. As to village farmers pulling cables, they all know, or very quickly find out, to turn off appliances. before pulling the cables, despite indications and claims they are usually stupid they are not, thoughtless, maybe stupid, no For an example of a safe controlled, but still dangerous with out protection, arc look at welding. -

Very important warning! Just look at videos showing “arc flash” those videos are at much higher loads/voltages but the principle is the same though you are less likely to die. -
I am not wrong at all, it seems that you may not understand the exact process. as @Lite Beer correctly stated though more definitely “ you can never extend a visa” You can extend your permission to stay. look at the tm7 again to be exact is clearly states APPLICATION FOR EXTENSION OF TEMPORARY STAY IN THE KINGDOM and “ I hereby apply for extension period of temporary stay in the Kingdom for……………days.” It doesn’t, never has, allow you to apply to extend your visa and as you correctly state it asks the details of the visa that allowed you to request permission to enter Thailand (that visa is virtually always no longer valid). The visa does not give you permission to stay in Thailand, that permission is granted by the immigration officer. There is an important difference between the 2

It isn’t a visa but an extension of stay and while I don’t use that method, for proof of income from a Thai source you are required to provide your tax documents showing that you are paying taxes on the income in addition to payslips. After January you are extremely likely to have to do the same for non Thai income as well since all income is due to be taxed from then

No problem. While Apple support are excellent they do make mistakes. However if you have an extremely large collection of audio books it is impossible to use the sync function and a program like iMazing becomes good value.

Anyone tried the DIY mozzie foggers? Thoughts??
sometimewoodworker replied to Crossy's topic in DIY Forum
That must be for your area as we got fogged a week or so ago. -
@BillStrangeOgre Wrong, there is no subscription required. Did you actually read it? You can use a subscription or not, I've been doing for over 15 years and while the application has changed the function hasn't. There are better programs to use but it requires moth escape ;)

You clearly haven’t bothered to do any research, this took about 30 seconds That is the only correct information. That is not correct, they certainty work, but well compared to split units, no. That is rather debatable since the the skill sets for the fixture are not at all common due to the fact that nobody uses them here due to the downsides in efficiency and higher cost/lower performance if you want a cheap ,direct from China version, you can get one of these. Another 30 seconds search

Installing guttering on 3 sides of a house.
sometimewoodworker replied to JeffersLos's topic in DIY Forum
You are fixated on the price point. I have never spoken about price, most because I don’t have (haven’t researched) information about that. i do know that you can buy shorter lengths (4 meters?) of much better quality gutter from any big store than the mobile gutter sellers stock and fix. you are so positive that steel roll formed gutter machines aren’t available here! this is a Chinese company that makes them so trivial to get in Thailand I haven’t researched the Chinese mobile machines but almost certainly they exist as bluescope uses them. -

sometimewoodworker replied to JeffersLos's topic in DIY Forum
Of course I do, and of course you won’t get anything remotely close to ฿100 per meter. Just because you haven’t seen it or don’t know about it doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. Bluescope products are rollformed on site the machines are totally capable of producing roof flashing in as long as you want so it’s a trivial (though not inexpensive) job to pit different profile formers for almost any profile you can think of. That you are so hidebound that you can’t understand that people can and do get something that is not mass produced is obvious from your posts. -

sometimewoodworker replied to JeffersLos's topic in DIY Forum
If you are talking about roll forming machines. You are completely wrong. For proof just go to this old house archives. They were using them years ago in their projects. I don’t recall the material used but it was copper/brass coloured. They aren’t an inexpensive option so you probably have never seen them. for proof and how they are formed and produced, this is a 12.5 metre seamless gutter -
You are thinking of swamp-coolers. They are a different animal to a portable AC
-
As long as you vent the water they will produce yes the will reduce the humidity, that is integral to the AC function. you can virtually guarantee that a cheap unit will be much less good than a properly installed split unit, even a high quality one will be much more expensive in purchase and efficiency (they aren’t sold in quality here so the price difference) the lack of efficiency is due to the having to vent much more air from the room than ventilation requires so needing possibly 50% more cooling capacity than a split unit. They are also much more noisy than a good split unit. So if you have no choice and can live with the downsides they are a viable option.

Help! I have questions about my leaking A/C
sometimewoodworker replied to Furioso's topic in DIY Forum
Your reading is incorrect and the information is wrong. The comfortable humidity range is between 40% and 70%. Get it too low, 20% and under, and you need humidifiers . I’ve experienced this in Japanese winters on the pacific coast where it drops to 10% and lower and every shop and business has them running all day. Without humidifiers it is painful. Get the humidity over 70% and you feel sticky, Thailand is often 80%+ I do have an industrial grade dehumidifier that I run in conjunction with my AC to keep my workshop under 70% and I have humidity meters in every room, currently in the AC bedroom it’s 59% and 24C, the living room is 56% and 28C, the workshop is dropping from 27C and is at 62%. These humidity levels are so low because the temperature outside at the moment is 24C and 70% The only time I ever see humidity levels as low as 25% is in the car. In the house you will get a 10% to 20% drop but the dehumidifier must be run with the AC as it pumps out heated air and you must also have the water drain running or you will be forever emptying it or the dehumidifier is too small to be effective. FWIW if I forget to have the water drain connected I will fill a 6 litre water tank in a couple of hours. -
Are there steamers available to remove wallpaper?
sometimewoodworker replied to giddyup's topic in DIY Forum
Correct, Again yes but scoring the paper allows you to make the job easier Incorrect. A steamer does nothing for vinyl wall covering, it’s waterproof, a heat gun doesn’t work either as the wallpaper size isn’t affected much by heat. Vinyl wallpaper is the easiest to remove as the top layer (the vinyl) can be literally pulled off the walls by hand. You leave the backing on the walls and don’t strip it off as it provides a perfect base for the new paper. The only problem comes if you want to paint not paper the walls because then you may, will, need to strip everything off and you will almost certainly either damage the surface or find it pre-damaged. And yes I absolutely know what I’m talking about having had to repaper several houses
