  1. If you have only a single large high resolution TV or monitor on your computer think about how far you will be from it to be comfortable. Let me explain. I use dual flat screen monitors. I used to do a lot of photography, and still do some, so I wanted a setup that would let me use an image editing program on one HD monitor and have the image editing window on a second monitor. They are a BenQ PD2500Q 25-Inch QHD (2560 x 1440) 16:9 IPS Monitor (pixel pitch 0.216 x 0.216 mm = 117 ppi) for the image and a LG 23MP65HQ 23" (1920x1080) 16:9 IPS monitor (pixel pitch 0.24795 x 0.24795 mm = 102 ppi) for the program. For normal use I can have two different programs opened in individual windows on each monitor at once, for a total of four programs. I can expand any program to fill a full monitor. The monitors are angled toward me. The total dimensions of the two screens is about 1 m (39") wide and about 30cm (13") high. My eyes are about 0.8m (31") from the screens and I have special glasses that give me sharp vision at this distance. If you have a very wide monitor or dual monitors like I have is you wind up looking at only one screen/side or the other most of the time, thus your head is on a swivel. If I was using a meter wide HD TV for a monitor my head would be constantly swiveling both side to side and up and down. Figure out how far your eyes are from your monitor, getting special glasses for this distance if necessary, then try out various HD TVs in the stores. Find the size, flat or curved, that is most comfortable for you. Higher resolution is never wasted.
  2. The lowest cost way to enjoy beans is to buy them dry in 500g packs and cook them. Usually I only cook 250g of beans at a time. I normally keep Great Northern/Navy/white pea beans (e.g. minestrone), red kidney beans (e.g. chili con carne), pinto beans, and black beans on the shelf for various dishes. Split peas (e.g. pea and ham soup) and split soybeans are also available. Cooking dry beans is easiest in a slow cooker but it does take pretty much a whole day, You can just cook them on a stove top until they are finished, turn the heat off, put the lid on the pot, then reheat when you want to eat them. Just two days ago I used up the last of my pinto beans to make refried beans to go with chicken enchalads in salsa verde with cheese and Spanish rice. Not a restaurant presentation but delicious.
  3. I classical clothing dryer turns an electrical resistance heater on, waits for the air to get too hot, then turns it off until the air gets too cool, then repeat, repeat, repeat. This is very inefficient. The inverter drives a heat pump at a variable speed to keep the temperature at a set level. Both using a heat pump and running at a constant temperature means greater efficiency. Inverter dryers are more expensive to purchase but will eventually more than pay for themselves in the cost of electricity used.
  4. Please excuse me if this is basically a repeat of a reply I made earlier but that one hasn't shown up for me. Here are three FREE web sites with all the information you need to pass the LTO driving license test. Some of the road signs are not seen in the USA but reviewing them is a good idea for anyone. Thai Traffic Signs and Road Signs Road signs in Thailand - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Study these question repeatedly until you know the answers and the LTO test is easy. Practice makes for improvement. Thai driving license exam with answers, 2020
  5. If you access Facebook on a Windows computer using Firefox then "Download Facebook Video or Photo" is a free add on that works well for not only Facebook but videos on many other sites. It does take some learning since it may show partial videos first then it will usually show a download for the entire video. It may also shows some "suggested" video downloads. Format Factory is a nice free video, audio, picture, document, and DVD\CD\ISO converter for Windows. I use it all the time for converting video files to a different format or for changing the resolution.
  6. I transfer money from my USA bank account to my Bangkok Bank account here in Pattaya by using my credit card for a cash advance. I pay off the credit card at the end of each month via internet banking. The credit card company charges a small fee plus you are paying BKK bank exchange rates, which are a bit higher than you can get at some currency exchange places, but it is much much less expensive than the bank to bank transfer my US bank charges. If you have a foreign bank account and credit card perhaps your friend can make the deposit to your foreign bank and you can transfer the money to Thailand the way I do.
  7. Allergic reactions to vaccines are common, everyone of them from DPT to the flu. The Salk polio vaccine was a killed virus and nobody got polio from it, but some did have an allergic reaction. Things changed when an attenuated polio virus arrived. It gave better protection but a very small percentage of people with weak immune systems got polio from it. I would call that a severe reaction to a non Covid-19 vaccine.
  8. Let me be the first to say that you CAN receive proper care here in Thailand. I know this from personal experience. If fact, I prefer it over the care (and expense) I would get in my country of origin, the USA. My cardiomyopathy was first detected on Boxing Day 2010 when I wound up in the Sukhumvit Hospital in BKK with breathing difficulties. The breathing difficulty was cause by Pulmonary edema, which was caused by the cardiomyopathy. Two days later, after high doses of IV furosemide (a diuretic), I had <deleted> away 3 kg, was breathing easily, and was released from the hospital with medications that included furosemide tablets. Since moving to Pattaya I have been treated by Dr. (Captain) Sarawooth Pholsane at the Queen Sirikit Hospital in Sattahip. Since my cardiomyopathy got somewhat worse a few years ago so he prescribed a larger dose of furosemide and added a couple of additional medications. I will add that I was a bit too heavy and since 2019 I have dropped my weight from 87.5 kg to 66.2 kg by simply eating less, which has made me feel a lot better. I am now below the "target" weight for my height and plan on staying there. One of my sons is a medical doctor in Canada and I have used him as a consultant. In his opinion I am receiving the exact same medications and lifestyle advice that he would have proscribed for me if I was his patient. I won't name all my medications since each patient should be prescribed medications specific to their medical condition. My cardiomyopathy is of unknown origin but with proper medication it is something that I have successfully lived with for over 11 years. The major problem I have is limited stamina. Walking up hill or up more than one story of stairs means stopping to take a rest, walking on a flat surface isn't a big problem if I proceed at my own pace, and I can do everything else in my normal routine - cooking, cleaning, etc. Not bad for an old fart that is 79 years old.
  9. I love using Thai garlic when I cook. It is milder, less bitter, and the odor isn't overwhelming like what I got in the USA. I generally use more than called for in a recipe, taste, and frequently add even more the next time I cook that dish. By the way, the biggest sin in cooking with garlic occurs if you saute it too long. It should be added after everything else has finished being sauteed, just before dishing up or before you add liquid. Saute more than 30 seconds, with constant stirring, and you are burning the garlic and turning it bitter. If you see a chef on TV add add garlic and onions together before sauteing them, stop watching because they don't know how to cook with garlic properly. Broiled garlic is very similar in taste to roasted garlic. Bake or broil whole cloves in their paper skins in an oven or saute on a hot skillet until the paper skin burns and the cloves are soft and perfect for sauces. Broiled or roasted garlic take garlic aioli to a whole new level. Add whole pealed cloves to the meat dish you are roasting and the cooked cloves are delicious. Pealed whole cloves will give a soup or stew a mild garlic taste and are also delicious, which is something I discovered when eating boiled crayfish in Louisiana many years ago.
  10. Simple, buy smoking wood pieces of the variety wanted. Lazada sells wood for smoking meats, etc. If desired split the wood pieces into small pieces, about 1/4" (0.6cm) square and a couple of inches (5cm) long. Soak the wood in water a few minutes. Place a couple on a sheet of aluminum foil and when you put the pizza on the stone or on the preheated cast iron skillet or griddle you put the sheet of aluminum foil with the wood strips on the bottom of the oven. The outside of the wood will dry out and start smoking. As it chars the inner wood will dry and smoke. How long the wood smokes depends on the size of the pieces of wood and how long you soaked the wood. You can always take the foil sheet and wood out of the oven and use them another day. You adjust the size of the pieces of wood, the amount you use, and the time you soak the wood to get the right amount of smoke. This also works for giving a roast of any kind or fish a bit of smoke flavor. Google how to do it in an oven for roasts or fish.
  11. The MG EV has a good reputation but it has a premium price and technology that is now several years old. The Chinese are turning out new cars at near ICE car prices with newer technology such as over the air updates and in car disco (We farangs may not need that but I guarantee your Thai significant other will want it.). If I were in the market for an EV I would be ordering a Chinese made one from Great Wall, BYD, Neo, etc. The newer Chinese cars are using lower cost Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) batteries. LFP batteries currently have a lower power density than Tri Metal (cobalt, manganese, nickel) lithium ion batteries but that won't be true by next year. Tri Metal batteries charged to more than 80% and discharged to less than 20% suffer increased degradation. LFP batteries can be charged to 100% then used right down to 0% charge with almost no harm to them. Do the math, 60% of full charge mileage with Tri Metal or 100% of full charge mileage with LFP and don't be surprised if LFP doesn't give you the same or more mileage. For the same amount of degradation LFP batteries can also undergo many more charges, perhaps 3000 vs 1200. BYD even gives a life time guarantee for the Blade LFP batteries in their Han auto in China - it is called the Atto 3 when exported and the guarantee will vary with the distributor.
  12. Easy answer, buy a pizza stone for your regular oven. Lazada sells them. If you want a taste of wood smoke in your pizza just place a small amount of wet wood of choice on a piece of aluminum foil on the bottom of the oven. A cast iron skillet also works well and is great for frying or baking.
  13. One of the famous scuba divers, I forget who, used to say that he always wore a full body suit and cap because everything in the ocean scratches, bites, or stings. I found that to be good advice.
  14. It is called lao khao. Fermentation generally produces a mixture of ethyl and methyl alcohol. Depending on the strain of yeast the ratio can vary. Both alcohols are poisons and both can make you feel drunk. The problem is that methyl alcohol is many times more poisonous than ethyl alcohol. Methyl alcohol metabolizes into formic acid, which is what actually poisons you. Ethyl alcohol metabolizes into acetaldehyde and acetate, which are less poisonous than formic acid. Brewer's yeast should be used for home brewing since it produces very little methyl alcohol. Wild yeast should not be used since there is no way of knowing what the ratio of the alcohols will be. Proper distillation can reduce the amount of methyl alcohol in the distillate to a non-harmful amount. The problem is that to do that you need to measure the temperature of the vapor as it enters the condenser so only the correct alcohol winds up in the distillate. This is something which backyard and boot leg distillers rarely do since they don't have a proper thermometer as part of their still and since they usually rely on wild yeast there is certainly a chance you can be poisoned by methyl alcohol in your lao khao. Personally I love a bottle of Thai home brew sato (Thai rice beer) now and then. The filtered and pasteurized bottled sato you can buy is pure excrement by comparison. The problem is that the Thai home brewers generally rely on wild yeast so you can wind up with a greater than desirable quantity of methyl alcohol in the sato. When I find it I still will drink a glass of home brew sato, but no more than that. It is one drink I do look forward to brewing when I finally move to my wife's family home, assuming I am still able to do more than simply sit in a chair and drool by then.
  15. Just like you need to have a Thai lawyer draw up your Thai will you should get your Thai lawyer to draw up your living will. This way the living will will be valid in any Thai hospital and can be applied as soon as you enter the hospital. If you plan on putting your wife in charge of your medical care should you be unable to do this yourself then, according to my Thai lawyers, she will need to sign the living will. You will also need to have at least one other party sign as a witness that you signed the document. Often this is a member of the lawyer's staff. Be sure to leave copies of the regular will and living will with your wife and any close friends. If you don't have any friends other than your wife then make some. Surely there are some farangs living within a reasonable distance who will enjoy getting together for food, drink, and conversation.
  16. I would have taken just about anything with lots of calories that could be prepared with a few minutes of minimal effort. A "less barbaric" cucumber sandwich just wouldn't have sufficed however. ???? You may be right. Winding up in government isolation center on a cardboard bed for about a week eating crappy food is what happened to an asymptomatic friend of mine 4 weeks ago because he was foolish enough to go to the hospital following a possible exposure instead of testing at home. Still cost him 100,000+ Bt.
  17. As stated by DrJack54, your retirement visa does not come with any reentry permits. You will probably need to go to a different desk, a reentry permit desk, and pay (separately from your retirement visa) for either a single reentry permit or for a multiple reentry permit. If you transfer your visa to a new passport the reentry permit(s) will not be transferred by the visa desk! You must get the reentry permit desk to transfer the reentry permits to your new passport. Two entirely separate operations.
  18. I wanted to get Lasic in 2002. I didn't know if this was possible or not because of my large prescription for myopia (shortsightedness). I first went to that "World Famous" hospital in BKK that specializes in treating farangs at inflated prices. The head of ophthalmology gave me the least professional and most worthless examination in my 50 years of wearing glasses and contact lenses, then scheduled me for surgery the next morning. I was so shaken that I didn't take a cab home to my apartment but walked down the street to the Nana Hotel, where I stayed before getting the apartment, to get something to drink and to settle my nerves. It was there that I got perhaps the best advice of my life from one of my Nana lounge friends - go to Rutin Eye Hospital for an examination. I immediately canceled the surgery at that "World Famous" hospital and made an appointment at Rutin. I have never had such a professional and through eye examination in my life as I was given at Rutin. The exam showed that while my myopia was greater than 9 diopters in both eyes that my corneas were thick enough for successful Lasic. I was shocked when the doctor told me she wouldn't do the surgery then. Turns out that she had found that my corneas were swollen because I had worn contact lenses. I had not been wearing my contacts for a month so that any cornea swelling would go away but her testing showed that more time was needed. She scheduled another examination a month later. This examination went well and the surgery was scheduled for a couple of mornings later. I won't kid you, the surgery was nerve wracking. I should have been given a Valium prior to the surgery to keep me calm during the surgery. The doctor never lost her cool and completed the surgery successfully even though I became agitated and "difficult" part way through the surgery. I should also have had arrangements for someone to take me home afterward and take care of me for a day. The hard part was being home alone while wearing vision restricting eye shields on both eyes. The results were spectacular in my opinion. I didn't have any infection, any haziness, or any light beams or rings of light shooting out of bright lights like some people have reported. What I did have was the ability to read, from my seat along the bar wall, the numbers on the tags attached to the bikinis of go-go dancers. Over the next couple of years, as my eyes aged, my vision did become worse again so that I now need a +0.5 diopter correction for one eye and a 1.5 diopter correction for the other eye. I could have Lasic again but at my age I am content to wear glasses when driving or when using my computer. Naturally at 79 years old I need reading glasses. I go to a street market, buy two identical pairs of 100 Bt reading glasses. One pair that gives me good vision at the reading distance for the right eye then one pair for the left eye. I pop the left lens out of one pair and the right lens out of the other. I then swap these lenses to the other pair and I have two pairs of glasses that have individual corrections for each eye. Hint, if you want to do this find on line and print out an eye test chart that you can hold in your hand at your normal reading distance while trying on glasses to find the right prescription(s).
  19. Please note I am not a medical doctor so this is simply common sense advice based on my years of experience (I'm 79 years old) and having had Covid-19 (home isolation). VERY IMPORTANT: If you test positive at a doctor's office, in a hospital, or in a public test center you will wind up in a hospital with a 100,000+Bt bill at the end. Keep at least four rapid test kits at home so you can test privately as opposed to being tested in a doctor's office, in a hospital, or in a public test center. The cost of test kits in Thailand is cheap, typically less than 100 Bt, so the cost is worth the feeling of security you get from having some available. I have four of the spit tests, which are much easier for self testing than the up the nose ones, on my bathroom shelf. The test kits cost me 75Bt each here in Pattaya. The incubation period is 2-5 days so if you think you might have been exposed then test yourself if you feel sick, especially if you have a fever. It is also a good idea to test 3 and 5 days after a possible exposure. If you have a live in companion do the same for them. If you test positive at home then you need to make a very careful decision about whether or not you are better off staying home or going into hospital. IF you have any pre-existing lung problems such as emphysema or if you are a heavy smoker then head straight to a hospital. Expect to be charged 100,000 Bt minimum, but being in a hospital early may save your life. If you are reasonably healthy with no pre-existing lung problems and you test positive at home with only mild symptoms be prepared to self isolate for 10 days. Skip anymore tests until about 3 days after you feel well again. Self isolation can save you the 100,000+ Bt you would be charged for hospital care. If you run a mild fever, up to 1ºC or 1.8-2ºF, don't do anything! A mild fever is a good thing, a sign that your body fighting off the infection. If your fever goes higher take two 500 mg paracetamol tablets every four hours until your fever drops below 1ºC or 1.8-2ºF at the end of the four hour period. If your fever goes back then restart the paracetamol regime. Do not mix alcohol and paracetamol since the combination can damage the liver. If the fever get over 2ºF or 3.6ºF then very seriously consider going to a hospital. One of the symptoms is loss of energy so if you stay home get plenty of rest. This loss of energy is because your body is using lots of energy to fight off the infection. Depending on your basic health and the severity of the infection the loss of energy can persist weeks or months after your body had defeated the infection. If you loose your apatite force yourself to eat to keep up the bodies energy. Keep a week to ten days worth of food in your refrigerator and freezer so you don't need to rely on food delivery. Cooking and eating was the hardest things for me to do when I had Covid-19. A couple of times adding shredded chicken and frozen chopped vegetables to Jok was all I could do for breakfast, but I then ate an extra meal or energy rich snack such as a peanut butter and jelly sandwich a couple of hours later. Favipiravir may be available at some pharmacies but if you need it then you should be in a hospital. You must always be wary of allergic reactions when using medications for the first time. Dosing is also something that must be regulated, generally being different for different ages or body weights. There has yet to be even one scientifically valid test showing that Ivermectin is of any value for a Covid-19 infection. Basically using it as for Covid-19 is a waste of money and using it can be dangerous in the case of an allergy or an overdose (easy to do if you are using veterinarian ivermectin).
  20. A lot of ED visa extensions not a problem I am familiar with so no idea about whether or not is a good reason to get a new passport so no advise about that. If you do get a new passport Thai Immigration will transfer your current visa to the new passport like ubonjoe said, If, however, you have a re-entry permit in your old passport the visa desk won't transfer the re-entry permit to the new passport. You need to either take both the new passport and the old passport with the re-entry visa with you on your next trip, or you need to go to the re-entry desk to get the re-entry visa transferred to the new passport. Two separate operations.
  21. How do you think she learned that violence is the way to "discipline" a child?
  22. If you fly you can get a visa on arrival at the PNH airport. This is a fairly efficient and fast service. You can also get an e-visa Kingdom of Cambodia in advance, which is good for crossing at a land border. I got one the first time I applied but didn't receive the visa the last two times I applied so after that I just paid the extra backsheesh at the land border. Here are the Entry Requirements for Cambodia as of November 15, 2021 .
  23. Google is your friend. How is import duty calculated in Thailand? If the full value of your items is over 1500 THB, the import tax on a shipment will be 7%. For example, if the declared value of your items is 1500 THB, in order for the recipient to receive a package, an additional amount of 105.00 THB in taxes will be required to be paid to the destination countries government. How much is tax on electronics? Electronic goods are mostly at 18% GST.Oct 28, 2564 BE Amazon and eBay shipping fees from the USA are exorbitant. I suggest you check eBay. Open the eBay Advanced Search. window Enter what you want to buy then go down the page to "Location", check the box next to "Located in", then scroll up to China and click on that location. Scroll down to the bottom of the window and click on "Search". Your search results will start with the item you want being shipped from China, followed by results from other countries. Shipping from China is frequently free and EMS shipping is always just a fraction of what it costs to ship from the USA.
  24. When I moved to Thailand in 2002 I lived off of Soi 71. Shortly after moving there I was in a taxi going up 71st to Phetchaburi road on my way to Fortune Town mall. At the corner we encountered a traffic accident. Involved was a Mercedes-Benz, a Jaguar, and a big BMW. The most expensive traffic collision I have ever seen.
