Thais have to be the world's slowest drivers normally, yet they still manage an incredibly high death rate on the roads. Stands to reason that when they're celebrating, get full of alcohol and start speeding, that death rate is going to increase. It isn't what the headline says, although enforcing the seatbelt law would help reduce car/truck/bus deaths. Motorbikes are a lost cause, although NOT drenching the motorcyclist with buckets of dirty, ice-cold water might help.

Amazing how some people will risk their life over a couple of bob. I've been ripped off several times during my time here, but figured it wasn't worth the hassle of causing a fuss over it. Many times I've seen farang arguing with baht bus drivers over 10 baht. Different of course if you stand to lose a lot of money.

Visa Retirement vs Marriage
jesimps replied to KayDeeDee's topic in Thai Visas, Residency, and Work Permits
The duty "teachers pets" are on the ball this morning. -
Want to place money on that? Pattaya starts unofficially on 13th and if you live out Ban Amphur way like I do, goes on until 21st. I don't care what the official line is.

Even though I'm disgusted with the Russians for invading Ukraine, I personally wouldn't wear a T shirt saying so. However, I have loads of admiration for those that have the courage of their convictions and wear them supporting Ukraine.

New rules for opening a bank account
jesimps replied to Dirk Z's topic in Jobs, Economy, Banking, Business, Investments
Many years ago when I was going to use the monthly income method for my O visa, I needed to open another bank account using Bangkok Bank for a monthly transfer from UK using wise. When I tried to obtain a letter from Jomtien Immigration, I was told "no" , they only issued them for driving license applications. Fortunately, I managed to open one by agreeing to buy one year's accident insurance, which I never renewed. -
Can you wear a speedo in public swimming pool for a man?
jesimps replied to Goodboybkk's topic in General Topics
It's the sensible attire if you want a good swim, also a sunbathe. I always hated wearing shorts to the pool, they just aren't built for swimming. Unfortunately, as I got older, it became necessary to wear shorts. Like bikinis on women, speedos are a young man's attire. -
British tourist smashes up Bangkok 7-Eleven (video)
jesimps replied to webfact's topic in Bangkok News
I agree he's a complete and utter turnip, but why is it when you see daily reports of all nationalities committing offences, it only seems to be the Brits who warrant a comment. Is it because we're normally perfect gentlemen? -
I park at Tesco's or Outlet and walk through, only ten minutes for this 79 year old. Let the missus shop while I sample the delights of the beer wagon.

Thousands hospitalized due to air pollution in Thailand
jesimps replied to webfact's topic in Chiang Mai News
I'm so pleased that I chose to live in Pattaya. I went to Chiang Mai once, before I knew about its pollution problems and thought it would be a boring place to live. Now since I've been reading about the smog they have to contend with for long periods, I can't understand why any farang would want to live there. -
Thailand is no longer the Land of smiles.
jesimps replied to bob smith's topic in ASEAN NOW Community Pub
There was no smiles from the lady at my bank this morning when I went in to report that my online banking login had for some reason been stopped. She insisted that I must have used the wrong password. I told her that I'd been using the same one for years and that my PW was unforgettable. After getting a new one for me she told me to remember it this time. Not one flicker of a smile all the time I was there. -
When the farang do gooders take over
jesimps replied to georgegeorgia's topic in ASEAN NOW Community Pub
I've lived in Pattaya for 16 years and never come across Christian, or any other religious protests come to that. There's a whole street here dedicated to gay bars; a plaza in Jomtien too. Could this be another excuse to bash Pattaya, the greatest place in Thailand? I think if it happened here, any foreigners protesting would find themselves on the next plane home. I'm off to town this morning so I'll keep an eye out for those nasty protestors. -
I started a diet last Boxing Day and have gone from 13 stones to 11 stones and from 42" waistline to 37 1/2". Achieved this by eating sensibly ie no sugar at all (including low and sugar-free stuff) and no fried foods. I bought the missus an air fryer as a belated Christmas present ???? Also (important) no alcohol. Plenty of fibre and gallons of water instead of diet cola and coffee. It has become second nature to me now and is no trouble at all, although I do have a large scotch and soda before bed each evening these days. I can always cut it out if the weight starts creeping up again. Don't know why I stuffed so much rubbish into my face previously.

Shame he didn't say that before the last one. "Prawit told reporters at the Palang Pracharath party headquarters that no military coup will be repeated in foreseeable future no matter which party might possibly become core of a post-election government, including the Pheu Thai and his own." Same difference, both coupsters.

I've lived in five condos and three houses and noise, especially loud bass-heavy music and dogs, has been a problem in all of them. My present house straddles the edge of a golf course, so you'd assume it would be quiet. Wrong! I'm of the belief that if I bought a place on a mountaintop, there'd be a little guy in a tin shack down the way who keeps a dozen dogs, rattling my walls with Thai pop music. Saying that, I've lived here for sixteen years so I must be the tolerant type.

Rain and hail storms hit Chiang Mai, causing widespread property damage
jesimps replied to webfact's topic in Chiang Mai News
My sympathy to the people in that house in the clip, there's nothing worse than seeing parts of your house succumb to the weather and you're largely powerless to do anything about it. I remember in the UK having to go on a sloping roof to replace tiles that had blown off during a severe rainstorm. Not even slightly pleasant. -
Formula 1 will NEVER go Electric !
jesimps replied to Social Media's topic in Thailand Motor Discussion
I gave up on F1 when the taking the knee capers was started by Hamilton, but if I hadn't, I doubt that I'd go to watch electric racing. The smell of the high octane fuel is part of what made it special. -
The beauty of using an agent.
jesimps replied to JeffersLos's topic in Thai Visas, Residency, and Work Permits
"And people actually go to an immigration office?" Could be something to do with money. I'm sure no one does it because of the friendly ambience of the place. I will say that if I was loaded, I wouldn't hesitate to use an agent.
