  1. I know some guys who have retired on relatively small amounts of social security or pensions. They would be alot more comfortable, and could live at a far higher standard here, than back in the West. Unless you own a home back there, it is so much more expensive to live there. One can live fairly well on $2,000 a month here. Not a life of luxury, but a good life. As long as you are single.
  2. No. I am not Italian, and I am not from New Jersey, or Long Island. Don't wear any jewelry. Don't need it. Not trying to impress anyone.
  3. The Anti-Corruption Organization of Thailand (ACT) was quick to condemn the case as clear proof of failure in a corruption-plagued bureaucratic system. Ha! The Anti-Corruption Organization of Thailand (ACT) is one of the most feeble and ineffective of all the tools Prayuth and now Sretta have used to deceive the people into believing that they are fighting corruption. Who was the last high level authority, in the police, immigration, the army, or the active administration they arrested, charged, tried convicted, and sent to prison? Nobody. Zero. Nunca. Nada.
  4. How is this news? This happens all over the world, every day. This is not worthy of dissemination. This is a non event.
  5. He is a hero. And the recent events are worthy of a mass funeral. Thailand might have been the tiger of SE Asia a decade or so ago, having been the 22nd largest economy in the world, but those days are long gone. They sabotaged tourism. They made the nation less appealing for investment. So, I would say it would be safe to refer to Thailand as an up and coming country, post Covid. I would not be surprised to see Thailand in 75th place in terms of GDP, 20 years from now. There is absolutely no doubt the nation is moving backwards, on at least a dozen levels. And unless a dynamic leader like Thanathorn or Pita is allowed to lead, the great tiger will continue to devolve into a whiny little street cat. Go ahead and stick with regressive conservative policies, resist change, needed reform, and progress at all costs, and run your nation into the ground.
  6. Please you honor. We don't like these pesky young ones. They are trying to move the nation forward, they want change and they stand for progress and reform. We can't have that. We must hold the nation back. We must keep everything the same. We must remain regressive.
  7. Safari is not far behind, if Firefox is the worst. I like it, and use Opera too. The plug ins on Firefox are great for preventing the ASEAN NOW ads from taking over my screen.
  8. And it is likely 60-70% white flour, with very, very low quality, highly toxic cooking oil or shortening.
  9. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Although my desktop is a mac M2 studio, my laptop is a macbook pro M1, and I use an ipad, I gave up the iphone. I consider it inferior on so many levels, to either the Samsung S22ultra, or the S23ultra. The iphone has become a fashion accessory, and a status symbol. Not necessarily the best phone out there.
  10. Glad to see someone calling out the former guys. Nobody knows exactly how corrupt they were. It would likely boggle the mind. The army is not known for nobility, honesty, or decency. Call them out. Expose them. Arrest them. Lock them up. OK, now I will stop dreaming.
  11. Nope. Wrong. If the theft of the election did not provoke unrest, it is likely nothing will. The people have been lulled to sleep. Facebook and the Korean dramas seem more important.
  12. On a recent trip to Phuket, it appeared to be around 35% Chinese, 30% Russian, and the rest were Malaysian, Indian, and Arab. Few Japanese. Very few Americans, Europeans, Aussies or Kiwis. The new Thai tourist.
  13. You do what I did. The cash is provided with the express agreement that it be returned after the wedding. After all, it is all a big show here anyway. The parents save face and all is good. Resist foolishness with every nanogram of your being. Resist tradition, resist nonsense, and don't be a party to it. Otherwise, be prepared to walk away. You don't need low quality inlaws.
  14. Nonetheless, there is currently no clear indication regarding whether the culpable driver will face legal consequences. The local police, under the leadership of Pol. Lt. Col. Tawil Khamkaset, have been diligently investigating the incident, pledging fairness for all parties in accordance with the law. The father should be worried. Justice should never be expected here, when the cops are bent, and so is much of the judiciary. Who has the most money? Anything that can be done to call out the cops, and create waves, a storm, noise, humiliation, and a call for alarm, is a good thing. Shame is often a big motivation here. Social media firestorms are the thing the cops seem to be most afraid of.
  15. There are plenty of nice, older women here who are also lonely, and would love nothing more than to have some companionship, and perhaps a little bit of financial security, that women all over the world look for. If he does not have a companion, it is either because he is impossible to get along with, like a good friend of mine, who keeps on meeting women who like him, and then scares them away with his outbursts, or he is not making any effort. Or, he does not want a companion, but wants something to complain about. End of story.
  16. Tried it back in the day. Fun, but a bit cramped. Nowadays, I like to have some space. No idea why this would be considered a news item. It is so unbelievably mundane. They were met with police upon arrival? Really? Was this some kind of flight hazard? Such utter nonsense. What is this world coming to?
  17. Exactly, and the precise reason why when someone asks me about visiting Thailand for the first time, I tell them always remember one thing while you are here, you are not visiting a foreign country. You are traveling to a distant planet. Which is a good thing. It is one of my favorite aspects of living here. The lack of familiarity is something I cannot get enough of. Life back in the US was so predictable, and boring. Not here.
  18. I forgot where I read it, but I remember seeing an article about the high rate of GERD here, and other stomach and intestinal disorders, brought on by Som Tam, raw meats, fermented eggs, dried shrimp, and some of the other bizarre and other worldly foods popular in Issan, and eaten by folks from Issan often. They even attributed a higher rate of premature death, from some of these foods.
  19. Here in Thailand, as little sun as possible. The sun is so over rated! LOL. The cloud cover brings a relief from the heat, some rain, winds, etc. Real weather. I can live without anything colder than 10c, at this point in my life, though it is fun on occasion. Cloudless skies and 25c, like the kind of weather you get in Los Angeles, is ridiculously boring.
  20. No issues. You did not offend me. I have thick skin, and it takes alot to offend me. I guess I have had the very good fortune of meeting alot of high quality ex-pat guys here. Highly accomplished, successful, and men who have little interest in what a drunken stupor offers. If you live in Phuket, Samui, or Pattaya, you will see more of this kind of thing. Of course, there are high quality ex-pats there too. You just have to be fortunate enough to meet them, and befriend them. Alot of guys who tend to be more serious, will avoid places where the rif raff hang out.
  21. This is likely unbelievable nonsense, and a total misinterpretation of Buddhism. Such drivel. Coming from monks who have a dire lack of wisdom. I am not demeaning Buddhism. Just those who interpret it poorly, do not spend hours a day in meditation and contemplation, and are in positions of authority, where they command respect, without earning it. I checkout out the Mahakammavibhanga Sutta the monk was referring to. Nowhere in there, did I see any mention of their interpretation of this teaching. However, it does mention on a dozen occasions the inherent evil of eating meat, by killing other living beings. This is an essential part of that teaching. Are these guys following that diving law? 15. (i) "Now, Ananda, there is the person who has killed living beings here... has had wrong view. And on the dissolution of the body, after death, he reappears in the states of deprivation, in an unhappy destination, in perdition, in hell.[7] But (perhaps) the evil kamma producing his suffering was done by him earlier, or the evil kamma producing his suffering was done by him later, or wrong view was undertaken and completed by him at the time of his death.[8] And that was why, on the dissolution of the body, after death, he reappeared in the states of deprivation, in an unhappy destination, in perdition, in hell. But since he has killed living beings here... has had wrong view, he will feel the result of that here and now, or in his next rebirth, or in some subsequent existence.
  22. Thanks. Your words are encouraging. Perhaps I am not looking hard enough. I love many forms of electronica (not techno, and not house or dub), jazz, classical, progressive or underground hip hop (not the contemporary, commercial garbage) rock (not hard rock), folk, and world music. My taste is very broad, and I am incredibly open minded, for a man of my age. Help me out, please.
  23. I know, the truth can sometimes hurt. But, when you make such sweeping generalization, in such an ugly fashion, you have to expect some blowback.
  24. You find a passion. Anything that does not harm yourself or others. You stay engaged. It requires a little bit of work sometimes. But, without passion, being conscious and present, and engaged, you might as well just surrender and die. Life has to be fulfilling, or else what is the point?
  25. You more or less confirm my theory that the current decade (and perhaps the decade prior to this one) is utterly hopeless for new music. Very little of it seems to have soul, wit, charm, or quality. An extraordinary amount of junk music, that seems to be about good marketing, social media hype, and not much else.
