  1. Well, he has already encountered Xi, possibly the most cowardly man on earth, willing to continue to decimate his people and economy over some Covid cases here and there. Zero covid? Who thought of that? For a people who I generally regard as smart, they are being really dumb about covid.
  2. You have one dictator, who seems to enjoy committing serial killing, and denying his people many rights, and another who pretends to be a legitimate leader and is utterly desperate to maintain power, but has no skills, and cares not one iota for the well being of his people. What a pair!
  3. Books are fantastic. Whether they are novels, bios, books on history, science or the cosmos. They feed the mind and soul. I download nearly all my books online. Have hundreds on my iPad. Love it. Find the time, it is worth it.
  4. You have another option. Leave your wife. And very carefully screen the next potential wife for design flaws. Find one that believes in you. Find one that respects you, has your back, and possesses common sense. As we know, Thais do not necessarily do it better. Many Thais have no pride in the work they do. Being doubted all your life cannot be very satisfying. Same applies to being surrounded by empty superstitions. That would try my patience to no end. You asked.
  5. They also announced a traffic safety campaign, a desire for transparency, a willingness to hand over power 6 years ago, freedom to protest, masks no longer bring required, policies to clean up the air, and countless other things that never happened. Nothing they say can be relied upon. This is just another pipe dream.
  6. This will likely never happen here. How much of the economy is off the books, and under ground? And will they be able to make the system more efficient? I have stood in line many times while someone fools around with their phone for 5 minutes trying to pay. It then takes me 6 seconds to complete a cash transaction. I always carry plenty of cash. Cash is king. Cash rules.
  7. Best while driving a motorbike to just assume nobody is looking, paying attention or willing to show you regard, or respect. Only by extremely defensive, ever vigilant driving will you remain alive and well.
  8. If only the people knew the true extent of the corruption. And especially when they try so hard to portray themselves as clean, and corruption fighters. Ha! Prayuth, Prawit, Anutin, Phiphat, Big Joke, and so many others. Hopefully exile, and a trial at the Hague awaits them all.
  9. Are you saying no mini marts or 7/11's at gas stations sell beer?
  10. Very, very common here. I know many men who live with their Thai girlfriends. Most do not have any issues with it.
  11. I buy my glasses online. As long as they are standard prescription, easy, cheap and good. I use Eyebuydirect. About 1500 baht for normal distance, reading or sunglasses. I tend to visit the US often and just carry them back. As good as the stuff you pay 10,000 baht for in Thailand. There is a limit to how much smoke I am willing to inhale, so to speak.
  12. I did. He was a good writer. I prefer more contemporary work. Other than Barry Eisler, not alot of good writers at this time, in the espionage, assassin, special ops arena. Victor Wood is halfway decent. The fact that guys like Sinclair, Childs, Sanford, and others sell so well, shows that the demand is there. But, modestly skilled writers are the order of the day.
  13. It would barely have any effect, if you are speaking of the 2pm to 5pm prohibition. Alcohol is easy to find, many already have it stocked at home and I just don't see what function this serves, other than to be an inconvenience for many.
  14. Thank you. The numbers may be rising slightly, but hospitalizations and deaths are down dramatically, and the latest variants seem to be weaker and weaker.
  15. We need to call out these guys by name. I know many are scared of the silly and childish laws here. But, that does not change what is true and what is righteous, one iota. This is simply surly protectionism at its worst. Shame them!
  16. Likely more about the softening of the dollar. Thailand's economy is doing anything but roaring back. However, inflation is lower than in the US and Europe where prices are soaring.
  17. Try using the CBP app. If you are traveling alone. Took me 2 minutes at LAX.
  18. The best way is to leave by 4am, or after 10pm. Driving through Bangkok during the day can be a nightmare.
  19. If an arcane rule like this had any effect, it is likely many nations would adopt it. How many nations are following Thailand's lead, especially with the rate or road related deaths here?
  20. Pansexual, amorosexual, or sexually fluid. Just admit you embrace a Greco, Roman lifestyle and are bisexual. Nothing wrong with hedonism. But, the new labels are very annoying. How would I know what you refer to yourself as? Then there is toxic masculinity. Nobody has ever used the term toxic femininity. So, are most men toxic? Really? Or is healthy expression of real masculinity just too much for certain groups?
  21. One foot is alot when it comes to a storm surge. It can cause many billions in damage, as we have also seen in NYC recently. And the one foot figure is very conservative. Climate change is very real. And we are the culprits.
  22. 1. Malaysians 974, 844 2. Indians 572,151 3. Singaporeans 313,792, 4. Vietnamese 269,442 5. Laotians 259,118 6. South Koreans 243,015 7. British 239,761 8. Americans 225,909 9. Cambodians 208,322 10. Germans 189,889 Hmm. Not many European tourists. And how many of us that came back and forth were on that list? How many business travelers? Can we trust the TAT? Or Thai Rath? On the mend is quite a subjective analysis. Especially when returning from zero.
  23. I wish I could learn the art of not thinking too much. We sure have an overly glorified view of our own over worked intellects. I think many of us prefer life here to life back home. I would only consider going back to the US if I was offered a $3 million a year job, or someone sponsored me for the same amount. Then I would leave after 2 to 3 years. Most people I know there do not have much of a life. Most Thai people seem more fulfilled. I know I am.
  24. True. And another contributing factor is the severe decline in the art of parenting. It seems to be a lost art. Weak parents create weak children. Over coddling, allowing the child to sleep with the mom till they are 10. Really dumb stuff like that, breeds very weak adults. I know a gal who has a 25 year old son who lives at home with his girlfriend. No job. He started college, then dropped out. And guess who does the cooking and cleaning, in addition to working 60 hour weeks. Why work, when you don't have to, and your mother is co-dependent and an enabler?
  25. Plato was a strange guy. Quite smart in some areas. A real dummy in others. He called the olfactory sense beastly and the cultivation of it a lack of refinement. Likely had something to do with sewage at the time. And perhaps a lack of great wine from Burgundy. But, it was a stunningly stupid point of view.
